I loved these guys during the 80's, always very popular in the UK without being massive.
How did they appear in the US?

That's pretty much the case over in the UK too Jen
I think they played a big part in 80's Trans-Atlantic pop music. They did cut some very smooth singles indeed....

Hall & Oates are great. I still listen to their old albums. Songs like Sara Smile, She's Gone, Maneater and Out of Touch are absolute classics in my book.
The Daryl Hall solo stuff is really good too. Good topic, Steve.
I love Hall & Oates. My fave songs by the duo: "Maneater", "Method Of Modern Love", "Dance On Your Knees" and Arthur Baker's extended remix of "Out Of Touch". It's great fun.
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

Same here regarding 'Method of Modern Love', although it was one of the most successful singles in the UK, and their last top 20 as a duo.
'Kiss On My List' and 'Private Eyes' still seem to be the most played where I come from, I like all nearly all their songs along with those two plus 'Maneater', 'I Can't Go For That', 'Out Of Touch' and 'Family Man' (great lyrics!) are my favs.
I like all their stuff though. I thought that Daryl did a good solo cover of 'When Did You Stop Loving Me' in 1993, but that's been about it for me.

Hall & Oates were a great team. I liked their music because it was fun. "Private Eyes" and "Kiss on My List" were my favorites, but I generally liked most anything they did.

I've always been a big fan of Hall & Oates. They were staples on the US charts throughout most of the 80s. Don't forget that they participated at Live Aid (from their hometown of Philadelphia) and in USA For Africa.
Back in 1987 when I got a CD player the very first CD I bought was "Tango In The Night" by Fleetwood Mac. The second was "Rock N Soul Part 1" by Hall & Oates!! I love their music so much. Personal favorites are...
I Can't Go For That
You Make My Dreams
It's A Laugh
Family Man
Out Of Touch
They have a "Very Best Of" that came out this year. It has 18 of their best songs on it! Blows "Rock N Soul" out of the water!!!

Did you know that they were gay?
Is there any truth to that? </STRONG>
I once read that Hall had made comments that he didn't find the thought of sex with a man disgusting. But as far as I'm aware he never made any statements that he was gay. I believe that this comment was blown out of proportion. Perhaps comments like that are enough to convince people that he is.
It doesn't change whether their music is great or not. So what, if they are gay? I'm not gonna sleep with them - and it won't keep me from enjoying their music.
I don't think that anyone would be bothered if they were gay or not, it's just a question that was posed.
Fair enough, my single cover of 'I Can't Go For That' did have John in pink jeans, white shoes and a sleeveless top, and one of their album covers did have them both made up to the eyeballs.
Trouble is it's hard to discern anything as that was the 80's, and both of them lived through the 'Glam Rock' years too!
My moneys on them being straight as most of their songs featured the opposite sex. However, George Michael *did* prove me wrong...

LOL! It is hard for me to hide that I like Hall & Oates. I am still trying to get all their CDs. Daryl Hall has a really nice voice. It is one of the few bands I like that aren't electronic.

I thought Darryl Hall was married. Anyhow, I loved thier cover of YOU LOST THAT LOVING FEELING, and the live album from the Apollo theater they had. Great CD.
BTW, whenI was in 7th and 8th grade, you could not go into a Pizza Hut without hearing a Hall and Oates song on the jukebox. Ever since then, I have never been able to eat at Pizza Hut and not think of them!
One thing I remember from a comedian was this joke "OATES, OATES! Here is a guy who had it made..... Him and Andrew Ridgley from Wham! have a new band, it's called 'Yeah Right' "
I always thought that was funny.
