Here is some news about Kazaa that I find a little disturbing. I had no idea this was attached to their software. Bet this is why they made people get the upgrade several months back.

After I installed Kazaa, I ran Ad-aware 5.7, which found 8 spyware components on my harddrive (it found zero before installing Kazaa).

Overall I like Kazaa, however. Just like the old Morpheus.

Audiogalaxy is not much better...what seems to be an update is nothing more than the same version containing more spyware - AdAware has found 8 different kinds of it in the new version W.0609. You canīt keep older versions as they wonīt work properly anymore.

But I have found out something interesting...it seems that the latest version of ZoneAlarm is blocking out every attempt of the spyware to get access on your computer by itself, at least I havenīt noticed this behaviour before with older versions of ZA.

I have noticed that also, Wave. After downloading the newest version of Kazaa, I had an attempt by some French tickler (gain tickler, actually) trying to access the net. Ad-Aware went into motion instantly and I nuked that puppy.

Spent the weekend rebuilding my system. Broke it into 3 separate partitions and installed ME (don't ask. my '98 cd wouldn't install), Mandrake-Linux and XP. Pretty happy with it so far. Wonder how long I will make it this time, before I decide to blow it all away and start over.

ME???
Boy...you really had to be desperate...

Here's an article I have found in the latest issue of a German computer business mag, I will recite it in parts:

Kazaa transports blind software passenger

Since February, the P2P-software Kazaa is containing a hidden additional program. Distributor Brilliant Digital Entertainment is trying to set up a separate net called Altnet which can work as a worldwide supercomputer on a P2P-base. [...]
The user gets automatically the "Digital Projector Media Player" which is meant to play advertisements, and itīs also containing a progam called "Altnet Secureinstall" which allows to set up a worldwide network. [...]
Many users donīt know that they are also installing the Brilliant programs, most of them are simply clickling away the user conditions for the use of Kazaa. But, in those conditions itīs stated that Brilliant is allowed to use the free resources of the users computer for distributed operations. [...]
The exchanging of multimedia data in Altnet will depend on a fee to pay, in return a better quality was promised. [...]

I think that Kazaa is busy with digging itīs own grave... :D

You are so right about the spyware. I already knew kazaa contained spyware, but it never bothered me.

For the hell of it, a few days ago I downloaded ad-aware and ran that to see what all spyware was installed. I was expecting to find about 3, but I found about 48!

I killed them all. Like I say, I can deal with it, but if I have a method to get rid of them, by all means.

Spyware is EVIL. Just like Microsoft.

 Yep! I needed a version of Windows running the 9x kernel so that I could run my cd burning software. XP and Easy CD Creator don't play well together, it seems. I think it is the Direct CD portion of the software. That's okay though, that is why I use CloneCD for cd to cd burning.

VERY TRUE!! XP and easy cd SUCK! Easy cd under 98 SE was just fine, but I moved to XP Pro (my first mistake) and installed the upgrade for Easy cd. Nothing but problems. I could have 100% data buffer, move my mouse, and go down to zero, just by moving the mouse around! That blows.

My friend recommended Sony CD Extreme. I got a copy of that and I now use it under 98 SE on one hard disk and 2000 Pro on another drive. Works just great for me. Simple and easy to use.

All I use 98 for is recording movies. 2000 has problems with many codecs and colors are VERY faded when recording movies. 98 runs much better with all codecs and my video capture card. I use 2000 for everything else. CD recording, newsgroups, just about everything else.

I also like the fact that 2000 supports multiple CPUs. I only have a single CPU, but I'm thinking about going dual.
