The announcement was made on April Fool's Day, 1985. I wasn't even 8 yet so I don't remember it personally.

I left home in January 1985 and started my first job as a bank officer in Auckland city. So I guess I was sitting in the lunch room listening to the radio. Can't recall now, but that's the most likely place I was at when I heard that news. :)

April Fools day. Rather appropriate huh?

I was negative one year old! Certainly was a defining moment though. I liked Sammy Hagar too, but Diamond Dave was the THE frontman of Van Halen.

I was -1 year 3 months old. I liked both, can't say I could pick one over the other. :p

I remember hearing it on the radio, Z-95, and I remember thinking it was a joke, but it turned out to be very real, and the end of Van Halen for me!

I suppose it wasn't important enough to me to really remember exactally where I was. I was 15 and a sophmore in high school. I did go to his solo concert the next year and it was a blast. I caught his bandana and still have it!:)

Let's see... it was my junior year in high school and I remember hearing about it, but I don't recall it being one of those memories where I would remember exactly where I was.

I was getting ready to enter junior high when Van Halen split with David Lee Roth -- which I couldn't believe. Van Halen without David Lee Roth??

I wasn't really into 'em when Sammy entered the picture, but they'll always be one of my favorites from the 80s.

Can't remember hearing about Dave's leaving VH. I'm sure I must have known at the time, but can't think of how I reacted.

I remember being really stoked about Roth getting this new hot-shot guitarist named Steve Vai and some great Bassist named Billy Sheehan. Couldn't wait for that album to come out.

My buddy said something I'll always remember: "I can't wait for Ed and Valerie to break up, so Eddie will write some really heavy, pissed-off love songs".

Still waiting.

I don't think I remember the exact moment I heard. It wasn't all that big a surprise, as Diamond Dave had already recorded his solo album and had a couple of hit songs from it by that point.

It was very upsetting to me!
Diamond Dave definitley has more "pizazz" than Sammy Hagar.
The band changed completely when Dave left...
Anyone remember, "D-TV"?
