I've been hearing this song played on the new toyota commerical.
This band played on Saturday night Live back in the early 80's.
The lead singer is a very light skin African American, I think. The song goes something like this....
? ? , where have you gone, do, do, do do do...??, where have you gone
I know thats not much to go on......but this is driving me nuts!!!

Could it be Fine Young Cannibals "Good Thing"?

FYC did indeed play on SNL in May of 1989, and performed "Good Thing". Not early 80s but everything else matches up.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about Fine Young Cannibals. Good Thing matches your song description perfectly. And Roland Gift, the lead singer for FYC was a part of the English Beat. The Beat could easily have performed on SNL in the early 80s
