I just saw the new commercial for the New Zealand Tourist Bureau featuring Crowded House's 80s classic "Don't Dream It's Over". There seem to be a spate of 80s tunes turning up in TV ads as of late. Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" turned up in a Publix ad. The Fixx's "Saved by Zero" was in a commercial for some car dealership. My question is, have you noticed any 80s songs in recent commercials? :)

Nikki_91
2-20-02, 09:12 PM
Yeah, I have been noticing that..mostly car commercials too! At least it's better than listening to country music (no offense to anyone that likes country) in a vehicle commerical.

That "remake" of Saved by zero so bugged me that I had to turn the TV down whenever it came on and kept my Fixx CD handy in case I did hear it. It was for a 0% down offer on cars. I think it was either Toyota or Nissan. I don't remember exactly. (This should tell you about where I'm at on my short term memory)

Theres currently a SAAB ad that's using the instrumental part of a song. I think it's a Cure song, but my hubby thinks it's Cocteau Twins. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and can clear this up, it would be much appreciated.

Sandals Resorts has been using a soundalike version of Madonna's "Holiday" to advertise their vacation getaways.

Now, while I'm not as much of a Madonna historian as some of this board's denizens, I wish to tell you what I think the song "Holiday" is about (with some assistance from the lyrics themselves):

If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice

Everybody spread the word
We're gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It's time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday

You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

-------

Now, I'm sorry, but I don't think of tropical drinks and bathing suits when I hear this song. Instead, I hear Madonna doing a dancefloor plea for peace among the world's cititzens. No more fighting, no more hurting, just good times: Not just a vacation, but for all time.

My interpretation is probably wrong, but still, it's my principle of the thing.

And I don't really approve of popular songs in commercials anyway, whether they come from the the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s.

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff...

Sorry for being a threadcrapper.

There's a commercial for Sephia cars that's actually pretty funny. Two woman are attending their high school reunion and are talking about a guy that one of the girls dated in school. At the end, they show the guy, who is now fat, has a mullet hairdo and is standing in front of a Gremlin-like auto, as "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls is playing. The only problem I have with the commercial is that there is a banner that reads "Class of 92" outside of the school. I believe "Class of 82" would have been more appropriate, but that's Madison Avenue for ya! :)

There is the Cadillac commercial with "It's Been A Long Time" from Led Zepplin. That might be 70s though.
There was also that MCI or Sprint commercial with the two women at the Rick Springfield concert. I think he was singing "Jessies Girl".

There is a car commercial but I Forget the car. :goofy: The driver is sitting in the car acting goofy and his friend opens the door and on the radio is mr roboto by styx. And they are both singing the song as they are driving. I hope someone remembers this commericial and knows what car company this is.

I have seen 2 ads for Dr. Pepper. They dont play 80s songs but they are 80s related. One is like a CHiPS setting only it says CHiMPS with chimps riding the motorcycles. The other is like the Harlem Globe Trotters. Weird commercials but I thought very 80s inspired!

It is Animotion's "Obsession", being used in advertisements for the phone company that Jamie Lee Curtis is signed up to do promos for.

Why do I like it? I like it because it shows a teenager dancing to the song in a club...Hey, it's better than Britney Spears, IMHO.

That's a fun commercial, boy advertisers today know where the catchy sound are from, yep, the 80's!! Any of you have local commercials that use 80's songs? We've had a couple, for window tinting "The Heat Is On" by Glen Frey and "9 To 5" by Dolly Parton for some club here in town. They're cheesy compared to nationwide commercials! :)

Another commercial featuring a classic 80s tune spotted: The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" is in an ad for a shower head! The commercial shows a group of people taking a shower in their respective apartments and singing along to "Don't You Want Me" that is playing on their shower radios! At the end, someone flushes the toilet and all of the showerers scream out! (Apparently, they all live in the same apartment building and share the same hot water heater!) :)

Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that the Class of '92 was way too young for the stereotype. Even Class of '87 would have worked better. I remember bitching about that one of my friends.

Yeah, I should be so lucky to have nothing more important to whine about than anachronistic commercials.

This is only 80's related because it involves John Fogerty but I heard he is upset that his anti-war song with CCR "Fortunate son" (remade in the 80's by Bob Seger) is being used to protray patriotism when it was written for just the opposite reasoning. He can't take action because he sold the rights to his songs to the record company.

When the 80s songs are licensed to the various companies, are the artists engaging in a form of whoring?:p

who can forget the classic (can i say this in one breath?) song 'Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha' by Trio. It was used in a popular ad for Volkswagon Cars.

NOTE: Da Da Da was originally not a hit in America (but was everywhere else including the UK and Canada) upon release in 1982, but became popular in the mid 90's when this ad came out.

Currently, STARBUCK'S Double Shot Espresso Drink is being promoted with an AD using a newly recorded version of the classic Survivor Rocky III theme 'Eye of the Tiger'

"And now you're a supervisor
It's the thrill of the time
Workin' up to the business of stockbroker
And the last known survivor
Stalks his work in the night
He knows one day he just could recall...Supervisor"

Look for Survivor as themselves in the commercial. NOTE: Jimi Jamison sings this newly recorded version, which in the original version was sung by original Survivor lead singer Dave Bickler. Eye of the Tiger was released in 1982. Jimi replaced Dave in 1984

1981's "Kids in America" by Kim Wilde (although in the commercial it's being sung by kids) is being used in the new K-mart back-to-school ads.

Are the kids of today really that much into 80s music that they'd like the songs in these commercials? Or is it, as I suspect, aimed at getting mom and dad's attention, thusly drawing them into the store to spend their money for their kid's back-to-school gear, because they had a commercial with a good song that the parents are nostalgic about?

Did they have back-to-school commercials when we were the ones going back-to-school? Did they play 60's music then? :rollin:

Actually, we were talking about 80s songs being used in TODAY'S commercials, not about 80s commercials themselves. But thanks for posting your ad anyways. It is rather nostalgic to watch old commercials again. A friend made me several DVDs of the Tracy Ullman show, complete with their local commercials, so it was cool seeing them again.

I have two to add tonight.

Four to add tonight

The theme to the 80s series, "Greatest American Hero" is being played for a commercial for Florida's Walt Disney World "Be a hero, take your kids to WDW" campaign.

Quaker Oats new product Weight Control Oatmeal is using Willie Nelson's "You were always on my mind" in their commercials. The main characters are dragging around their scales which are chained to their ankles.

Blondie's One way or another is being used for the newly redesigned Swiffer Sweeper commercials

John Cougar Mellancamp's "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." is being used for the NCAA Basketball championships commercial. (Same tune, different words)

Dryell home-drycleaning system has a catchy instrumental tune that sounds 80-ish, but it's nothing I recognize, so it may be something that was written just for that commercial. It just sounds 80-ish with lots of synthesizers.

Can you tell I've done nothing much other then watch t.v. today?
