View Full Version : Favorite 80s Rap/Hip Hop Hit: 80sTrivia 2-20-02, 12:08 PM Which 80s rap/hip hop song would you rate as your favorite? 80sTrivia 2-20-02, 12:15 PM After much debate, I voted for Nenah Cherry's "Buffalo Stance". I just love the energy of this song, plus it was one of the first rap/hip hop songs to hit it big by a female artist. BTW, it's supposed to read "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa, not Salt-n-Papa!!! Iluvthe80s 2-20-02, 12:27 PM I voted for "Funky Cold Medina" with "Bust A Move " being a close second behind. majorfan11 2-20-02, 12:59 PM I am going to go with "Walk This Way". djdaffy1227 2-20-02, 01:38 PM I went with "other" even though there was no other  I have to go with "Follow the leader" by Eric B and Rakim. The only one listed that I like is "Walk this way" by Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith. With all due respect, "Rapture" is not a hip hop song no matter how you slice it. I do, however, love that song! 18th Century Brain 2-20-02, 05:13 PM I'll go with Walk This Way. Cool song. DaVinchi 2-20-02, 05:15 PM Some good tunes, but how about some early stuff, like Roxanne by UTFO? btw, I also voted for Buffalo Stance. Christine 2-20-02, 06:27 PM I voted for "Walk This Way" by Run DMC and Aerosmith. Runner up is MC Hammer - "U Can't Touch This". :D angeleyes25 2-21-02, 02:46 AM I went with Push It by Salt N Pepa.I was a big fan of there's.I only went to 2 concerts and Salt Ne Pepa was one of them.I think it was back in '95 but it was a tuff decision ask me again later and I might change my mind. 80sTrivia 2-21-02, 07:23 AM Originally posted by djdaffy1227 [B With all due respect, "Rapture" is not a hip hop song no matter how you slice it. I do, however, love that song! [/B] Well, it does have rap in the song, hence the title, "Rapture". And the title of this topic is Favorite Rap / Hip Hop 80s song, so that's why I included it here. :) Chasey 2-21-02, 07:26 AM Has to be Grandmaster Flash Melle Mel and the Furious Five with 'White Lines' by a mile. - I guess you'll include that on part 2 huh 80strivia? ;) Chasey 2-21-02, 07:27 AM Originally posted by 80sTrivia Well, it does have rap in the song, hence the title, "Rapture". And the title of this topic is Favorite Rap / Hip Hop 80s song, so that's why I included it here. :) Hehee, nice reply 80striv...but I'm not letting you off this one! :D Gotta agree with the DJ on this one...Blondie is solid New Wave for me. 80sTrivia 2-21-02, 07:32 AM I got this from VH-1.com: Blondie's "Rapture" (1981) Often cited as the first No. 1 pop hit to feature rapping. The song gave shout-outs to Fab 5 Freddy and Grandmaster Flash. The video featured Fab and downtown art luminary Jean-Michel Basquiat. Fab 5 Freddy: "The coming together of uptown and downtown was something that I kind of engineered. I was making paintings at the time and having exhibits. My entrée into the downtown scene was a person by the name of Glen O'Brian. He took me under his wing and allowed me to be a part of a public access cable TV show, done in black and white video. Through doing that show, I met Chris Stein, the guitarist from Blondie, who was like Glen's co-host. They would smoke joints right on the air. I was looking for people to be supporters of my work, having done graffiti on the subways to try to move into galleries. Chris Stein and Debbie Harry basically became my patrons." Grandmaster Flash: "Back in the days before Fab 5 Freddy became the huge personality at Yo! MTV, he used to come to my parties. He told me that he was close friends with Blondie, and that he would bring her [Debbie Harry] to one of my parties in the Bronx. I was like, 'Yeah, right.' The audience I was playing for at the particular time was primarily black so when I saw Freddy slowly coming through the crowd and this blonde-haired woman with him, I'm like in slight cardiac arrest almost. She was checking out the set. She said she was a fan, and was gonna do something with me on her next record. I was like, 'She's just telling me anything.' Lo and behold, a couple of months later there's the song and it's everywhere. In a lot of ways we had to go through the back door just to get accepted. Now I'm going through the front door with a high-powered, super influential pop artist like bang! It totally put me on a whole other level." Doug E. Fresh: "Blondie was like Madonna. Blondie was big. When we heard Flash's named mentioned, we was like, 'Yo! Blondie mentioned your name?! That's big playa, that's real big.' It was like it was no longer this little thing around the neighborhood. Now the world knew about it." Chasey 2-21-02, 07:53 AM Wow! I never knew that, thanks for the info 80's Trivia :) Obviously this is the case - I'll never listen to 'Rapture' in the same way again!! sassy 2-21-02, 10:10 AM I could dance to that song all day and night.. I loved watching them dance.. i learned alot of dance steps from them. djdaffy1227 2-21-02, 12:54 PM actually 80s trivia, Rapture means the end of the world, as in aliens eating everything in sight  Blondie has stated that the "rap" was terrible and she wished she could just redo it but has a lot of fun with it live. It was more a tribute to rap as opposed to being a full blown rap. She is respected in the rap community for bringing the style to the forefront of pop culture. Note how Grandmaster Flash said they "had to go through the back door to be accepted" meaning he had to go through a bonifide pop hit to be heard. The video was even shown on the first episode of Yo! MTV raps. The first actual rap to go to #1 was *gag* "Ice ice baby" by Vanilla Ice in 1990. I still do not and never will hear "Rapture" and think it is a rap. BTW, this is really good conversation! Thanks 80strivia:thumb: 80sTrivia 2-21-02, 01:11 PM I always thought that Blondie were a group ahead of their time. They recognized what was going on in the urban music scene in New York and incorporated it into a No. 1 pop hit. In 1981, few people knew what rap music was about. You're right, DJ and Steve, the song "Rapture" wasn't rap in its purest form, but it did help rap music gain visibility and credibility in the pop world, making way for future rap and hip hop artists! :) Recker 2-25-02, 08:28 PM OK, I'm not going to comment on Blondie's Rapture as being appropriate or inapproprite in this poll, I'm just gonna vote for it because I love Blondie, I love the song and I don't really like any of the other songs on the list! :D Dancingdoll1986 2-26-02, 12:35 PM *violently shakes head back and forth over the whole "rap" thing* Okay, better now!! I did like the rap part in Rapture.....It was FUN!! BUT... I voted for Bust a Move. When that song came out, Cindi and I sang along with it constantly. We even went out a bought outfits in "yellow" so we could say "hello" to all the fine "fellows". Dorky, but oh-so-sadly-true....we actually did that. My yellow outfit was from Esprit, and I still have it. It's a halter top, with a long yellow skirt that has an enormous slit going up the front side. :D That 80z Girl 2-26-02, 01:06 PM It was a tough choice between " Fight for your right" and "Buffalo Stance", but I had to go for Buffalo Stance. I used to listen to the single over and over again when it first came out in the summer of '89. My friend and I listened to it on our way to the Bon Jovi/Skid Row concert. Fun memories. Of course, "Fight for your right" was our unofficial senior theme, so that song has good memories, too. this charming man 2-26-02, 04:10 PM I didn't expect this to be as tough as it was. It was very difficult but I went with Buffalo Stance in the end. I still play it a lot today and my little girls like to dance to it, so I guess that swung it for me. 80sTrivia 2-26-02, 04:56 PM I guess I'm a little surprised that so many people liked "Buffalo Stance"... I loved the song when it came out, but most of my friends went into tizzy whenever the song came on the radio, fighting to turn the station!!! :) outofplacechild 2-26-02, 09:41 PM but in my heart, I'm a Public Enemy man. They do more for me than Young M.C or Tone Loc ever could. To understand the oblivion that the blacks were suffering under white Republican rule, just hear Chuck D. and Flavor Flav rapping these lyrics: "Elvis was a hero to most But he never meant shit to me Straight-out racist that sucker was Simple and plain MOTHER**** HIM AND JOHN WAYNE!" Also, remember 2 Live Crew next time. P.S, I hate to be an annoyance, but wasn't "Mama Said Knock You Out" from 1991 or around there? Sincerely, John "outofplacechild" Kilduff... Not that I don't like it, it's a great dose of braggadocio, but I was just...eh, forget it JS 2-27-02, 06:40 PM I chose Run-DMC and Aerosmith's Walk This Way (from '85??). fiya kraka 2-27-02, 07:08 PM Walk This Way:thumb: I love this song. Both solo aerosmith *sigh* and the remake with run dmc. (the video Rocks) Trixter 3-04-02, 02:12 AM "Buffalo Stance" by Neneh Cherry all the way! I still listen to that CD frequently to this day! The song is energetic and fun! :thumb: lostboy 3-11-02, 04:04 AM I voted for "Fight for Your right"! I love the Beasties! I would have had to vote for other and voted for Run DMC and "Tricky" or Sir Mix A Lot - "Posse on Broadway" "Dick's is the place where the cool hang out, the Swass like to play and the rich flaunt clout. Posse to the burger stand, so big we walk in twos were gettin dirty looks from those other sucker crews" Flix 3-11-02, 05:55 PM I voted for "Buffalo Stance" by Neneh Cherry. I still like that along with the original version "Looking Good Diving" by Morgan McVey where Neneh raps the Buffalo Stance part. Cool dance anthem. xistenza 3-11-02, 06:18 PM Buffalo Stance, hands down. I had completely forgotten about this song. I wonder if I still know all the lyrics. hehe. Nikki_91 3-11-02, 10:26 PM I had to vote for Rapture, only because I love that rap Debbie Harry does. If Run DMC 's "You be illin'" was on the poll or even "Tricky" , I would have voted for those. Shakey 3-12-02, 10:43 PM For me, it's just gots to be the Beastie Boys. Man, that was good 80's music. :) pamela* 3-15-02, 11:01 PM I voted for "Push It" because it reminds me so much of Friday nights at the skating rink... that was the freakin theme song they played it so much.. but it was fun.. Those were the days!! Vincent 3-19-02, 12:17 AM Originally posted by outofplacechild I hate to be an annoyance, but wasn't "Mama Said Knock You Out" from 1991 or around there? Good catch. Yeah that song was from '91, maybey even '92. And Hammer's "Can't Touch This" was from 1990. The original song that Hammer stole from, "Super Freak" was far, far better. Boggle 3-23-02, 07:13 PM Had to go with Buffalo Stance. A very highly energetic song. Rapture would have to be a close second. Liked the video for Rapture better, though. Roemello 3-24-02, 11:04 PM Another tough decision, but I gave the dupe to 'Bust a Move'...fun tune  80sSmurf 3-30-02, 01:57 AM Went with Funky Cold Medina :) My top 3 80's hiphop would look something like this 1: Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc 2: Anything from Ill Communication - Beastie Boys 3: Hey you (the Rocksteady Crew) - Rocksteady Crew I guess Technotronics and MARRS didn't make it to this list, coz they're considered dance/techno :) Steve Savicki 4-09-02, 07:34 PM "Buffalo Stance" by Nenah Cherry depressing minor chords in the chorus "No money man to win my love" 80sTrivia 4-09-02, 10:27 PM Yeah! My favorite hip/hop song of the 80s, Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" is in the lead! I just saw the video to this song on VH-1 Classics just last week. Nenah sure was a cutie-pie... loved her cute British accent! :) BBG 4-19-02, 10:31 PM There is no possible way I could choose just one favourite, I can't even pick just 5, I love this music!!!!:1offwall:  :1offwall:  BlitzKid 5-02-02, 09:48 AM The Beastie Boys, because that's a classic! I used to like Buffalo Stance very much when it was in the charts. But my real favourite, which was not for choice, would be White Lines by Grandmaster Flash. abcmcd 5-09-02, 09:25 PM "Walk This Way" got my vote. I loved the blending of the rap and classic rock.:) But I always enjoy a "Funky Cold Medina" when the mood is right too.;) DanAria 5-10-02, 08:18 PM "Can't Touch This" is my faverite and was the first rap video I saw. nolanbuc 5-14-02, 04:33 AM Bust a Move! Call me nuts, but I think Young MC was a genious! Not only did he bring us gems like "Bust a Move" (remember Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing bass in the video?) and "Principal's Office", but he also wrote the Tone Loc hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina". Young MC was one of the few artists that brought rap into the mainstream in the late 80's/early 90's, a time when it wasn't exactly a driving force in pop music. Pippi 5-29-02, 05:41 PM I voted for Buffalo Stance from Neneh Cherry. She was cool and all her songs from her first cd are great. BBG 5-30-02, 03:31 PM Originally posted by nolanbuc Bust a Move! Call me nuts, but I think Young MC was a genious! I agree, Young MC is fantastic!! :yesnod: :thumb: DC Rebel 6-02-02, 01:18 PM Youve gotta fight for your right to party was an awesome song. It was always being played at every party that I attended to. whistledog 10-23-04, 10:40 PM I quite like Push It. Gets me dancin' everytime i hear it :Thumb: Jeebs68 10-28-04, 04:05 PM So many great songs to choose from. But I have to go with Walk This Way. Xcess-N-Htown 10-28-04, 07:28 PM This is the first poll that I liked every song. Favorite would have to be L.L. Cool J. Great song that Mike Tyson use to use before all of his fights. Njs4ever 10-31-04, 04:50 PM I went with "Mama Said Knock You Out" even though that album was released in the fall of 1990 -- it was the third single from the album (after "The Boomin' System" and "Around The Way Girl"). That song blew my 14-year old mind because it had (and still has) so much intensity. Had "Mama" not been included, Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" would have taken second place, followed by Salt 'N Pepa's "Push It" and MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" -- also 1990. If you dig this music, please do not miss out on Njs4ever.com -- you won't regret it. I need to add a link to this site on ours!!! It'll happen. Just watch. Wait -- I just did: http://www.njs4ever.com/links.html -- Njs4ever. pimp 11-12-04, 08:37 PM I voted for Funky Cold Madian with Wild thing, walk this way, and bust a move right behind it. Man, these polls are hard LOL! Tanya1976 11-16-04, 12:20 AM Rapture gets my vote, but Buffalo Stance would be second. blackdragon 11-16-04, 12:23 AM BEASTIE BOYS!!!!! I love that song. La Swiss Miss 11-27-04, 07:29 PM I would have to go with: Funk you up - The Sequence or It's Tricky - Run DMC .. even though it's one heck of a hard decision to make to just choose JUST ONE all-time favourite oldschool track. DJ Midas 12-26-04, 10:04 PM "Bust A Move" whistledog 12-26-04, 10:57 PM There was a great late '89 rap hit in Canada called Let Your Backbone Slide (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33282) by Maestro Fresh-Wes. It's a shame that it did not become a success in the States. It's easily the best 80's-early 90's rap song I have ever heard :thumb: pimp 12-30-04, 07:24 PM There was a great late '89 rap hit in Canada called Let Your Backbone Slide (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33282) by Maestro Fresh-Wes. It's a shame that it did not become a success in the States. It's easily the best 80's-early 90's rap song I have ever heard :thumb: Hey, I went to yahoo music and gave Maestro Fresh-Wes a spin and watch the music vedio to Let Your Backbone Slide. Sweet jam!!! To me not THE best of the late 80s but its high on the list. Thanks! AngelicR 12-31-04, 02:33 AM Push It Salt N Pepa I liked Vanilla Ice & MC Hammer alot as well. snoops71 2-07-05, 02:42 AM I chose "Push It." ;) bookmistres4ever 2-07-05, 03:14 AM I liked Push It best. I also liked Fresh prince's "Parents just don't understand" which wasn't part of this poll. Dude111 4-09-06, 02:19 PM I think BUFFALO STANCE was one of the best from all those listed (Then Funky Cold Medina) 80s Queen 4-11-06, 12:11 PM Too many good ones. There's just no way. BBG 4-18-06, 04:29 PM I can't pick a favourite song. I have so many of them, and some of them are not listed here either. I love rap/hip hop:thumb: 80s Queen 4-20-06, 11:52 AM Yeah, I know what you mean. I know you can't include everything, but I am surprised that "Rapper's Delight," "Joy And Pain" and "You Be Illin" arn't in there. PirateRadio 11-19-06, 04:32 AM Well, I've voted Beastie Boys on this list, although there are many many other great hiphop songs, like Biz Markie (Beat tha Biz, Friend), Slick Rick (Children Story), Digital Underground (Doowatchayalike), Public Enemy etc etc. 1819 12-15-06, 05:07 PM gotta go with yo little brother by nolan thomas. |
