Which 80s New Wave hit do you like the best? :)

This was my favourite song for weeks back when it was released!

Again very tough choices because I love them all! I went with "Kids In America" by Kim Wilde. That is one of those songs I could just listen to over and over again.

It was difficult for me to decide which one to vote for, as I love all of these songs!!! :) I finally decided on "It's My Life" by Talk Talk. I could hear that song a million times and never grow tired of it!!! :cool:

Can't say it's my absolute fave NW tune, but out of these I went with 'It's my Life' as well...was a toss up between that and ABC's 'Look of Love' :cool:

"Just Can´t Get Enough" is one of the New Wave prototype tracks for me...

I voted for Yaz's "Only You". I bought the cd for that song, and that song only!! This is one of my favorite songs of all-time!!!

Exactly! Me too Trixter. Course now I pretty much love the whole cd. I thought I was going to have a hard time picking a fav til I saw Yaz on the list. They take it hands down. :D

Of this list, I selected "Only You" by Yaz; I actually like the Flying Pickets version slightly more, but the song is lovely and holds a few special memories, regardless the group performing it.

My true NW fave track? Very difficult to answer that; there were so many great tunes and equally great memories attached to them! Hmm. Possibly something from Depeche Mode (but obviously not "Just Can't Get Enough" which I always found too saccharine and terribly uninspired when compared with the rest of DM's oeuvre). Likely "But Not Tonight".

"It's my life"... if I have to choose one. "Planet earth" was also a great option. Most of my own favorites were not in the list, that's normal... anyway, I agree with Tvdiva: Depeche Mode has LOTS of songs better than this super-commercial "just can't get enough" (the whole album "music for the masses", for instance...).

No offense, but none of those on the list...although I like a lot of them very much...

LOL, Jane! Now, I do not have an overly pronounced Southern drawl. I actually grew up in Northern Kentucky, but spent several years living in Mexico and Spain, so the hick drawl never had time to take effect!!!

Where in Spain did you live? Do tell! (or point me to the thread where you did tell) I did a semester at the University of Valencia in 1983 and absolutely fell in love with Spain, and those cute spanish boys (hence Guancho being a brother-in-arms!):) Gosh, the 80's music scene was great in Europe at that time too!

Kentucky, SC...you can still say it again...for a New Yawka anyone south of Jersey has a cute southern accent! LOL!

The music scene in Europe during the 80s was primo, Jane. I studied at the University of Salamanca for a semester as well! Fell in love with Spain and going to the discos in Madrid every weekend. Boy, that was fun. Then heading to Barcelona for a bit, before taking the ferry out to Majorca and Ibiza! Oh, what fun!!! Those were the days! :cool:

What year were you there? Gosh, was it partAY heaven or what? Like do those people know how to have a good time and do they ever sleep? I was out dancing and at the beach (lucky I made it to class!) every day and every night...the clubs there ROCKED...so besides being an excellent dancer, you're fluent in Spanish too I imagine???

I also had fun in Madrid, Ibiza and Mallorca, and have a friend who lives on the main commercial beach stretch in Mallorca...hoping to get back there someday soon.

I voted for "I Melt With You" by Modern English. :thumb:

Out of the choices presented, "Goody Two Shoes," (that song always makes me get up and boogie) but "I Melt With You" was a close second. :)

B-Movie's "Nowhere Girl" is a great song. I used to love it so much, but the love has died down as it seems that it's every new wave girl seems to think it's "their song". Ha ha. :)

Jane...out of your list...I'd have to go with The Damned, "Alone again, or". I LOVE this song and am a huge damned fan. Dave Vanian's voice is so good. I have like 6 versions of this at least! hehe. :D It's one of many songs I'll never get tired of.

I'm amazed that my fav', Kids in America, is in second place! I thought only me and about three other people even remembered that song!

I bought that album three times back in the '80s. My girlfriend borrowed the first copy and never gave it back. The girlfriend's friend got the next copy away from me, and I don't know what happened to my third copy. Not too long ago I ordered it off e-bay - brand new and man does Kim look as good as I remembered. Nobody's gettin' this copy away from me! I even ordered the "Gold" CD so I could play it all the time and not worry about wearing out the record!

I'm not surprised that Kim Wilde's "Kids In America" is in second place, Valley Dude. It's a fantastic tune that still sounds great today, twenty years on! And I still want to hop up and dance whenever I hear it!!! :)

Of the tracks listed here, I voted for "I Ran - A Flock Of Seagulls". I love the reverb (echo effect) on the vocals, giving that "spacey" fururistic sound. I also like the way the end lines are held on '...I walk along the avenue/I never thought I'd meet a girl like youuuuuu Meet a girl like yoooouuuuuu...' again adding that spacey sound.

Mike Scores ridiculous hair cut was the perfect image for this type of music, though in the video clip for I Ran, the hair is not as obvious, and he looks awkard (and a bit like a half-wit!!) as he raises and lowers his arm and finger to "play" the keyboard. A better image of his hair (and indeed the whole futuristic look) can be seen in the video clip for "Space Age Love Song".

For me,"I Ran" screams the '80's. Keyboards; electric drums ; reverb effects and the highly melodic tune all charasteric of the early '80's new wave, or as I prefer (no guesses why! My name, maybe???) new romantic period.

Kids in america got my vote, loved that song on the soundtrack to Reckless

I have to go with ABC's "Look of Love'... my sisters & I knew every word... and "Poison Arrow" was another great one too...

Only You by Yaz got my vote. Upstairs at Erics is one of my all time favorite CD's. I'll have to find the version by the Flying Pickets that tvdiva mentioned.

For what it's worth, "Kids in america" is one of my karaoke songs that I sing.

I always find these poll results quite fascinating. :) Most of the time, the songs that were a group's biggest hit are not selected (in overall votes) as the favorite. Very interesting... :cool:

I just can't get enough of Depeche Mode. It's a good dance song and I will never be tired of it.

I had to vote against Depeche Mode on this one. Just can't get enough is overplayed and overrated as a DM track. I went with ABC's Look Of Love. The voice of Martin Fry and the strings of Anne Dudley...yes please :)

This is in defense of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough", which is a song I really like.

I'm so sick of hearing people use the same tired criticisms. "Too saccharine"..."too commercial"...my God geta grip we are discussing 80s music. It's supposed to be "saccharine" and "Commercial"...it was the EIGHTIES, for God's sake.

What does that even mean, "too saccharine"? As in "too nice"? "Too sweet"? If so, I say good. Depeche Mode got all depressing, all "Serious", and pretentious, far too quickly. Thankfully, they have this one great, happy, upbeat and positive song.

Too "commerical"? You mean its a song the average person might actually like, as opposed to the strictly snobbish goth-like people who buy their new stuff? Again, good!

It's like comparing Madonna's "Like A Virgin" to "Justify My Love". One may be more artsy, serious, and deep. One might be "saccharine" and "commerical", but if Justify My Love had been her first song, would her career have gone anywhere? And, does the average person on the street like Justify, or Virgin?

Anyhoo, if you're going to criticize someone, at least use arguments that are fresh and new. Don't dump all over something because it's upbeat & happy, or because it's popular.

Personally, "Just Can't Get Enough" is the only Depeche Mode song on my MP3 playlist.

I think "Just Can't Get Enough" is an excellent DM track. It's always been a favorite of mine, although, I have to agree that I sometimes do get tired of hearing it so often (from the radio or a club or The Gap commericial). My opinion of the song will never change, but sometimes I know even I have to put a track to rest for a while before I can enjoy it as much as I want to.

In fact, there are certain songs that I love, but make a point not to "overlisten" to them because I never want to get sick of them. Make sense? Maybe I'm just crazy. :rolleyes:

-Chuck I'm sorry that our opinions can make you feel so sick. I'm one of the persons who thinks that "just can't get enough" is too commercial. I have all the "study" albums of Depeche Mode and also some live one; I like its music and all kind of music that sounds like DM (f.e., Camouflage). I don't think I'm a snob. I'm not saying is a bad song, but I don't like it specially, and it's not because "is popular" (more popular was "Personal Jesus", and I love it) and even less for being "upbeat & happy". I grab my own compilation Cds, and when I heard this song I'm always tempted of skip it and go directly to the next one. Take all the albums of DM and look for and adjective for the first one; for me is just "commercial", is not for you?. And I'm not discussing if that was necessary or not, or wondering about what would have happened to the band if their first album had not been commercial!. Do I enjoy that song for these reasons?.
I know that a lot of people loves this song, including some people who has more or less the same taste in music as me. But when I say somethig I'm thinking that the rest of the people will accept my opinion as it is, in the same way I accept someone else's opinions. In another thread someone said that didn't like the whole album "Exciter": I don't agree, but... OK, is just an opinion!.
BTW, I don't agree with you that 80s music is supposed to be commercial...

Can't for any. For me, my fave New Wave song has *got* to be Love Missile F1-11 by Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Something about that band and that song I always liked.

I always find these poll results to be an interesting study. What surprises me about this poll is that no one voted for the Go-Gos!!! :D

I never really considered them to be new wave....always figured them to be pop. That's my excuse :lol::p

This is my first post ever in any message board here. (Just signed up a few minutes ago) My vote would be It's my Life by TalkTalk. I am a big DM fan but Just Can't Get Enought is not one of their best work iin my opinion, admittedly though it's one of their bigger hits.

Now we're talkin' some real music! When I was a lad, top 40 was what I would call music. If Casey Kasem was playing it, I was listening. A few songs intriqued me though, Cars by Gary Numan and Pop Muzik by M and naturally enough, Devo's Whip It. I didn't really get seriously into new wave until High School when everybody and I mean EVERYBODY was into Van Halen. I couldn't see it. I tried to listen to them and couldn't do it. But I was really into Ultravox and the Thompson Twins and the English Beat and Der kommisar by After the Fire. So then, our cable system comes across with the MTV and Bang! I'm gone. I try to suck up like, everything. How could music be this cool? Our new wave station in San Diego was 91X - I listened all the time. Ahhh, good times!

In relation to this poll, I gotta go with "Look of Love". I bought the Lexicon of Love album a number of years back and I thought it was brilliant. I loved them ever since I heard the song "How to be a Millionaire"

"Look of Love", ABC, Lexicon of Love. I've three copied of this, vinal, tape & CD, so this track has to be one of my all-time loves.

Went to see them live years ago in Birmingham. Still very vivid memories of the night.

Just checking back with the results of this poll. I think this is one of the most voted upon polls we've done around here. "Look of Love" and "Kids In America" are currently tied for 1st place with 9 votes each, which I find to be quite interesting! :dance:

There is no way I am voting against Depeche Mode. Just can't get enough is not their best song, but it is still one of the biggest reasons that I discovered them as a band.

A hard one but I went with Depeche Mode on this one.

I voted for Planet Earth, although i would classify this song as New Romantic, as opposed to New Wave. But great idea for a poll! Someone mentioned Soft Cell's Tainted Love, w/c for me, is one of the best new wave songs ever!

Actually I feel that Spandau Ballet should be on that poll as well given their output during the 80's. Their early hits definitely qualify for this poll!

Modern English was a great band. I love that song Melt with you. It was beautiful song. It was over played for me when I was dating Duncan my x... He was nuts with that song. But I still love it none the less.

Had to go with with kim wilde on this one... :cool: Another one of my faves is her "you keep me hanging on." I love the synth at the beginning and the band hits especially.... :D

It's My Life by Talk Talk - not only is it my favorite from the list but one of my favorite songs of all time

I will need to have the terms new wave and new romantic defined, sometimes i get them mixed up, but I really liked all of the songs on the poll and was not really sure if the go-gos were considered new wave as before they became really popular, they were a punk band. I am willing to have my eyes unclouded to see the light..please some one enlighten me..;)

I had to go with "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock Of Seagulls. After all, I do consider it one of my favorite 80s songs of all time.

Looks like we have a three-way tie between It's My Life by Talk Talk, I Ran by Flock of Seagulls and Planet Earth by D2, with Depeche Mode's I Just Can't Get Enough closing in... :clap:

I really did like Look of Love by ABC. They were what i thought to be the greatest band of the 80's. They didn't have as many singles or albums as alot of other artists, but they did leave a lasting impression.

Plus, they were a british band who had constant success in both Canada and the USA, which was not an easy thing to do in those days

I went for "Planet Earth", by Duran Duran. I love almost every song on that list, but I can never ever get sick of Planet Earth!

You've skipped great bands like ULTRAVOX,VISAGE,Classix Noveaux and many others,so i went for Duran Duran. :yesnod:

Although it's not on the list, I'm casting my vote for 'Space Age Love Song' by A Flock of Seagulls.

Brian Wilson once described the Beach Boys song 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' as a "teen-aged symphony to God". When I listen to Space Age Love Song, I'm left with the same feeling. For me, the song evokes a powerful flood of positive emotions and endorphins unparalleled by any other song (except maybe "Wouldn't It Be Nice").

I'm not sure why I respond so positively to the song, but for me, Space Age Love Song is my anthem of the 1980s, and a reminder of everything I loved so much about the decade.

I've played each of the given options in my head and decided on Talk Talk :clap:

This was a hard one, but I'll have to choose "I Melt With You" followed by "I Just Can't Get Enough". While "I Melt With You" was a bit commercial for a Mod type band like Modern English but I still like the song. And I loved it being in "Valley Girl" and what that movie stood for.

It would be better to list any Alphaville or Bronski beat at the list...

but my vote goes to Talk Talk as usual... :)

No doubt about it : I ran - Flock of Seagulls.

Did not know them untill last summer. I saw a bands reunited show with afos and fell in love.

Those are all awesome songs and it was hard to choose just one but I voted for I Melt With You by Modern English.

Hard to decide. I like everything on the list except Look Of Love and Goody Two Shoes. In the end, I had to go for I Melt With You

I Melt With Your is one of my favorite songs of the 80's period!

I voted for "Kids In America", but I like many of the other songs as well. But, ahem! where is Visage's "Fade To Grey"?? (Often mentioned as the start of the new romantic wave.)

Well, I think "Fade To Grey" is my real favorite. But it could have been Gary Numan's "Cars", if only it hadn't been released already in '78...
