I posted this on my board too, and I thought it would be fun to post it here. What fads and fashions do you think will come back? I think that the make up will be all about soft, and pastel again, ankle socks with high heels, ruffle skirts, camouflage, punk, and new wave, parachute pants, black and white checked "Spicoli" tennis shoes, narrow ties, funky suits, and big hair. It will all be back. Trust me http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

I found this picture of The New Monkees, and they are a picture of what the 80's styles were in the late 80's what do you think?

I'm hoping they'll all come back. When it comes to glamour and appeal, the 1980s are my 1940s. The men looked handsome in their own unique way, and the women...Babe Central! Fox-base Alpha! Hello Nurse! As you can tell, I really like the way women looked back then. Goths, punkers, Vals, Pat Benatar lookalikes, rich beyond your wildest dreams, straight out of a Nagel portrait, Flashdancer, Madonna Wannabe, Female Prep, big hair, eye makeup...I loved the way the women looked back then.

As for the photo of the New Monkees, they look handsome in their own unique ways. At least they look somewhat better than the boy bands of today. I think I might give the Jared hairstyle a shot when I'm out of the house and in college. How I could get the hair to go with the Miami Vice look I'm planning will be tricky, but I think it might work!

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I think they are coming back in a big way! Yay!!!! I posted my theory in my board and thought I would paste it in here for you all to read. Here it is, I'm too lazy to re-write it all.
Well since camouflage is coming back, it will be hot. Also those Pat Benetar Head bands, and the Pat/ Sheena Easton hair style will be back. Umm the pale color make-up (they called them sherbet shades in the 80's), and heavily made up eyes, like the women on Dallas, Dynasty, and Knots Landing. Slim fit pants, and jeans, with the large fluffy sweaters, New Wave, and PuNk. The old Madonna look, and the old Cyndi Lauper look. Big hair, and and tropical styles. Neon colored everything, and I think Cyberpunk will be coming back strong. The Matrix, and the tv show Dark Angel has shown that people are liking that kind of science fiction.

I have a theory, I think that the retro craze for the 80's will be the strongest one ever. The reason I think this is because in the 70's the 50's nostalgia was just for fun, going to 50's dances and maybe wearing saddle shoes was about it, in the 80's some people wore sandals, or moccasins, and tie dyed t-shirts, and wore face paint at a Greatful Dead concert, but that was about it too. More than in the 70's but not a lot. Well in the 90's we went 70's crazy! I look at some of these kids, (and some adults too) and you would think it was 1977. The tv show That 70's Show is pretty much the way it was back then, I remember! Not like the way they idealized the 50's in Happy Days, in the 70's, or the 60's in the Wonder Years, in the 80's. And now for why I think the 80's retro craze will be even bigger than the 70's one is now. See we can never truly re-live the 60's or 70's because of AIDS, and the way the world is. We have been made a bit to cynical by the Reagan administration to really go back and be a flower child, or a disco diva. And free love is out unless you want to die of a terrible virus. But we can relive the 80's, and do it all over again just like before because we had AIDS then, and so it can be pretty much the way it was. What do you guys think?

Cool! I agree. Some aspects of the 80s might not have been so good, but if we can just resurrect the culture and the fashions, we can have a rockin' good time! I am so looking forward to an 80s revival. It's just starting, my friends! Wait a few more years and the beauty, appeal, images and rhythms of the 80s will be back. I'll be basking in that glory, and I'll feel like I belong! As an 18-year-old 80s fanatic, people are telling me that the music and movies of today are better (fashion and hair are going back to the 80s as we speak, so I don't include them). I say, "Give the 80s a shot! You just might enjoy them!"

I like you! 18 and you dig the 80's. You're okay in my book. I'm friggin old (32) but I had a blast in the 80's. I was a teenager then, and I remember what it was like. I had fun, and I know it will be back, and soon. I remember in the early 90's people were talking about the 70's come back, and how disco would be big again, and the styles, like the bell bottoms were coming back, and lots of people said "No way! The 70's sucked, they'll never come back." I kept saying oh yeah they will, trust me, and sure enough they did. Just like now, the 80's are coming back, and we're about to see it happen! And I think it's Awesome! (a popular word from the 80's lol)

Hey. I don't remember the "New Monkeys" at all! As for styles of the 80s coming back - I think they most definitely can! And why not? The stuff looked good. Even though I wasn't a big New Kids on the Block fan - they dressed nice. Those styles were cool. I liked the Miami Vice look - I tried it for awhile and I liked it. My main style was the "Guido" look, though.. heh Yeah, that was me.. Nowadays, I'm going for an 80s Rocker look. I've just got to grow the hair out. It's coming. Once it does, if I can manage to look good enough - I'm hoping to put some ideas into the heads of the more impressionable new millenium kids. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

Ahhhhh yes!! I am anticipating the comeback!! Unfortunately, I do not have a bunch of my 80's stuff still with me. I MAY have kept my leg warmers, i think they are in my parent's attic. I miss the baby doll shoes... hardly anyone I talk to remembers those!

My faveorite was the big, long oversized shirts with stripes or paint splatters and either the wide elastic belts or, if you were REALLY cool, you had a 'leather' one that when buckled slanted to the side!! And maybe it had a few metal studs on it!! (Man, that was my FAVORITE belt... I wonder what I did with it?)

I still, to this day, taper the legs of any jeans or pants I get!! Not as tight as I did before. I had a hard time getting them over my ankles to take them off!!

I work in a salon, I am 29, the beautician is 30, the tanning owner is 31 and our receptionist is 35 or so....believe me... hardly a day goes by that we don't talk about the 80's!!
As a matter of fact... our receptionist STILL wears her hair big!!

Sal.. I thought that your hair was long already... ???
Now I am going to need to see a recent pic!

I miss the oversized, flourescent shirts from the 80's,
and the mini-skirts... and mesh shirts to wear over your tank top....
But I also was into wearing concert t-shirts as well, with painted on jeans or leather pants...

One thing from the 80s that's comeback in a huge way is breakdancing! So many groups now are featuring it in their film clips.

I hadn't really noticed either...breakdancing was huge in my neighborhood in the 80's (grew up in the ghetto, what do you expect? http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif). Everyday there'd be huge pieces of cardboard scattered all over the place http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif I used to do it fairly well. I miss wearing the clothes I wore way back in the 80's! I loved my GUESS jeans with the zippers at the ankles, my International News sweatshirts, Bio, Generra, ESPRIT, Coca cola clothes, Fluvogs, etc, etc. I kept most of my favorite 80's clothes, and I can't wait to put them on again!

Otherwise, you must have seen my halloween pictures, Tinajo! Those were the long haired ones. My hair was very short in September and is only growing a few months. I've got a ways to go before I have long hair. I will try to take some current pictures tonight. I've gotta try to remember...

Hey... I just thought of another 80's clothing fad.. "RELAX" shirts...
Re-watching The Wedding Singer helped me to remember that! Big hoop earrings... Big cross earrings...

flourescent shirts and socks were fun...
mini skirts with bobby socks and heels...
Collar up on your button down shirt with the tank top underneath...

BIG HAIR !!

And there were several cool types of sunglasses...http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00shades.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//E8.gif
Remember the plastic shades that came like in different colors, (some in flourescent), and had the little slits in them, like shades? I had Flourscent green and pink ones, a pair of black ones and blue ones. I alternated them with outfits...

Hi guys, I haven't been around for awhile. From a fashion point of view I would like to see the corporate work place relax like it used to be. You used to be able to have long hair (pulled back in a pony tail in some cases). I also miss the Miami vice look (no tie, I feel like a monkey on a rope when I wear one). I some times do the Miami vice look when the wife and I go out and she loves it, but it's a no no at the office. Also my wife used to wear her leather skirts with her suits and stuff which looked REAL good(love that look, she's got a bunch of them). They are real popular again. She will also get to wear some of her 20 pairs of boots she has in the closet too(love those also). They are really comming back into style. I've noticed alot of newer songs with an 80's sound to them. There is one I hear on the radio, something about a girl dreaming in digital. It sounds like Depeche Mode. It might even be them since they are comming out with a new album.

Hi Sal! I've changed jobs and have been real busy. The wife and I had a baby the October before last. He was 2 1/2lbs and 3 months early. He spent alot of time in the hospital and he has been sick lately. I haven't had much time between family, business and school. (I've sinced picked up my CNE3, CNE5, CNAIW and MCP. I take TCP/IP test Thursday, Enterprise next Friday and IIS the Friday after for the MCSE+I) With all that my internet time has been short. I also sold the C4 and I am now racing one of the new LS1 Zs. I saw your post awhile back on CZ28.com about the LS1 F-bodies. They are great cars. I am very impressed with mine.

It's good to be back,

Yes the 80's are coming back, and the nostalgia for the 80's will be bigger than it was for the 70's in the 90's. I myself am verry excited! I love the 70's too, but I was a teenager in the 80's so my memories are different for the 80's. I watched the spring fashion shows for spring 2001 a few months ago on the Style network, and the clothes were soooo 80's! The off the shoulder flashdance look, flowery ruffly dresses, and ankle socks with high heels were really big. I hear from friends the pastel/ sherbet colored clothes are featured in the fall 2001 shows. Yep their coming back!

The 80's are definitely coming back. However, rememeber the old phrase, "be careful what you wish for". It will come back...nostalgically. It won't be real. The kids that this year are running around in baggy jeans with their underwear hanging out, listening to Eminem and wearing their baseball caps backwards will all of a sudden grow their hair and start wearing ripped jeans, leather and Iron Maiden t-shirts. To use an 80's term...NOT!

It'll be just like it was when they tried to bring back the 60's. "Gee, let's have our own Woodstock!" Three days of peace & love turned into three days of looting, raping, rioting & groping.

It will be good for those of us who truly loved the decade, and who actually can remember the feeling (even if you weren't there, right Amy?) but for everyone who jumps on the bandwagon, it will just be another fad.

The saddest thing is...when the 80's revival dies out, they'll try to revive the...shudder, gasp, cringe....90's.

morningmyst
2-19-01, 08:52 PM
The 90's???? What did they have that wasn't really a "ripoff" of any other decade? (except, maybe the baggy jeans.....*blech* )
I agree with you Pagan on all of the kids doing the Wanna-be's....just not real.

I didn't get to wear a lot of the 80s fashions 'cuz my parents were BROKE... but I remember Ocean Pacific t-shirts, Nike shoes (I had a pair bought by my grandparent for me... it fell apart in 4 months!), and since I could afford Izods I got the dragon on my shirt from Sears. :-P Can't remember the name... also got a sweater with a panther on it 'cuz the Puma logo was so popular...

I miss the 80s looks too... some of the fashions were cheese, but that's true of any period. I felt like the ladies of the 80s were extremely glamorous, reminded me of some of the models of the 40s with an 80s edge.

When the 90s come back we get to relive Nirvana and flannel and baggy pants and anger and backwards ball caps and 14.4 modems.

yay. :-(

I was more of a goth/new waver in the 80's I wore black from head to toe even in the summer. I really miss the 'peg leg' jeans, I still love them and would wear my chuck taylor converse all stars (the original style) with them after wrapping them even tighter at the ankle http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif. I also used to staple my jeans to the wall at home and take a disc grinder to them to get the shredded jeans look (with my own twist, I would wear black long johns underneath, I loved black and still do) I also miss my hair I had then, I used to take 40 minutes every morning before school to do my hair using VaVoom, the only hairspray that could hold my hair at the lengths I had it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//cool.gif I was a big Robert Smith fan (for those who don't know he's the lead singer for The Cure)
Does anyone else here struggle to find clothes they like nowadays? I HATE the jeans selection men have to day, women can pretty much choose the style they want still, but I feel I'm forced to look like an Eminem wannabe. Did you know Levi's quit making tapered leg jeans a couple of years ago due to market research...oh sorry I'm starting to rant.

I'm with you all the way Urethane! I was a total Goth/punk/new wave/cyberpunk chick. God I loved that stuff. Sorry to all you preppie kids, but I had no interest in being a preppie, besides I look TERRIBLE in pink and green. Yuck! LOL! My cousins were totally into the big hair metal bands, and I liked them, but they weren't my favorite. That's what was so great about the 80's there was something for everyone.

However, I think saying nostalgia isn't real is a bit harsh. You know what they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I don't see anything wrong with kids getting ideas from the past and then turning it into something new. People have always done it, just not as much as the past few years.

If you have noticed recently, it looks like big hair is slowly creeping in. I have seen some girls on campus and on TV wear the sides of the hair in a feathered/Farrah Fawcett kind of way. It won't be long now that this look is slowly going to transform into bigger and bigger hair a la 1980s.

All the malls around here are occupied by mostly baggy clothes wearing,98 lbs.,skater kids(very depressing)so I get stared at quite a bit(although no one has had the guts to say anything to me yet)but maybe it's not the ripped jeans, maybe it's more of those people who think I'm the Undertaker,I had a couple kids at the wall mart ask me if I was him just the other day.(Ahh,the trials of looking like someone famous, actually I still don't think I look like him but...oh well)http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Not as easy to figure out now though since we changed the format of the member list....it no longer has a search option to find the top 25 posters http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif

Hmmm. Wonder if there is a way to export html to an excel format? Then you could just sort the data? Of course, you would have to export every member. Eesh! What a chore.

Actually, there's a lot of members who've never posted a single message (even some that signed up in like April/May of 2000), so some could probably be discluded if that were to happen http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif Most of the top posters are in the 'team' listing, so that's a pretty good indicator too http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Back to the blue jeans. (I'm new so pardon me!) I remember slathering my legs with baby powder, and then taking the top of a coat hanger, hooking it thru the zipper and pulling up.

It always looked totally killer with my black AC/DC T-shirt.

Which reminds me. Anybody remember that WASP Concert Shirt that said on the back: I F*** LIKE A BEAST I have a hysterical story about that one... I met this guy in the local roller rink back in 1986 (I think) wearing that shirt. I said to him, "Pardon me, but you fart like a beast, eh?" I was only like 14 at the time! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Still can't believe I said that! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif

Oh and let's not forget those killer white shirts with 3/4 length sleeves and the rainbow across the front. Oh yeah and the barrettes with ribbons wove through them! COOL!

I think the 80's are coming back slowly =) My younger cousins who were born in 85 and 86 are wearing the cut up jeands..hehe
I told them i use to wear cut up jeans. I don't know about everyone else, but to me it seemed as if the styles of the 80's should have been for the 21st century in my opinion =) very futuristic!
