View Full Version : Official 80sxchange Awards: Category #5 - Best Invention Of The 80's
Iluvthe80s 2-09-02, 08:38 PM I am posting this for Trixter tonight since he couldn't do it. Vote for the best invention of the 80's. I know some of these things might have been invented in the 70's, but they made their impacts in the 80's in our lives. This voting session will end on 2/23/02.
For me, it would have to be the VCR. I was able to watch movies in the comfort of my own home. Record events to watch through the years and at my own leisure. I couldn't live without mine.
I voted for the PC. The invention of the PC took the corporate sized computer mainfame that fill a small room and compact it into a unit that could do the same work and more from your own home.
Today PC's are used in virtually every business from movie studio's for special effects to the small storekeeper.
Christine 2-09-02, 09:27 PM I voted for CDs and CD players, although many of the inventions you listed (big screen TV, VCR, PCs) I can't imagine my life without.
Thanks for posting this Stacy, I really appreciate it! :)
I voted for 'CD's and CD player'! I was beside myself when these marvels (well they were back then) came to exist, I just know the future of music would never be the same. Compact and easily portable, your music became convenient and more enjoyable. Crisper, clearer sounds, the way music was meant to be heard! :thumb:
space-invader 2-10-02, 07:40 AM out of the 6 listed, i only own 2 of em...cd player and pc so i guess i had to vote on one of em
without cd's at least you could have records, tapes, etc, but without a pc...there ain't much alternative!
Roemello 2-10-02, 10:02 PM That's easy....the PC! Without that, we wouldn't be having this convo right now! :p Second would definitely be CD's....no secret I'm obsessed with music :D
angeleyes25 2-10-02, 10:56 PM Vcr's!I don't go to the movies that much at all.I usually just rent them when they come out on video. If it wasn't for the vcr imagine all the movies I would be missing out on!Not to mention you get to tape thing's of the t.v.I could go with out cd's and cd players, portable phones and video games.Big Screen t.v.'s are nice if you have the money for one.I can't live without a computer now but I didn't have one in the 80's.I just got my first computer about a year and a half to 2 years ago.
VioletFoxx 2-10-02, 10:57 PM That was tough. I had to go with VCR. Finally I could record things and have them forever and ever! Very essential for pack rats like me :D I love my PC and very nearly voted for CD's and CD players, but I can't live without my VCR.
LadyMysTrix 2-11-02, 01:14 AM I voted for the PC. It's continues to make anything possible. Provided of course, someone has written the software.
I had to vote with the PC, too. I have everything except the big screen tv, although my tv is 35". All those other things I could do without. My PC is indispensible. There is no substitute for it. Come to think of it, there isn't a substitute for the VCR either. So that would be my second choice.:)
Sara Smile 2-11-02, 12:30 PM I voted for CD's. I would die without my CD collection.
Even though I didn't own one until the 90s, I voted for the personal computer. The other things are certainly great luxuries to have, but the computer furthered business and personal goals. :)
Mystery Woman 2-12-02, 02:09 AM If you'd asked me this in the 80's, I'd have had to say VCR. I only had that and the PC back then, and I hated the computer!
Now, though, I have everything on the list, and I have to say that the only thing I wouldn't want to have to live without is my PC. Ever since I got 'net access, my computer can pretty much do everything all the other devices can anyway to some degree.

Caligula 2-12-02, 07:44 PM I voted for VCR's, Yes the PC came out, but it really never became a household item until the mid 90's, Big Screen tv's are cool but not everyone has one, Cd's were also nice, but we had lesser alternatives. However the VCR's became huge in the 80's almost everyhouse had one, it changed the way people watched movies. It started a mini industries of stores dedicated to selling VHS movies, it even affected the entire porn industry. I think pc's are more important now, but during the 80's I think the VCR had the most affect on the average persons household life. :)
this charming man 2-22-02, 10:48 AM I went for the VCR, PC's & CD's didn't have a big impact on me until the nineties.
The VCR however meant I could watch films at home when I wanted to. I could also tape programs off the TV and watch them later. It really was a great invention and prevented many arguments about who was going to watch what, when two programs clashed in our house.
COOL BREEZE 2-22-02, 01:52 PM Well computers are a gimmy and CDs are great but I,ve beeen a big vinyl fan for too many years (over 20,000!)But I had to go with the VCR! When I was a little kid and wasn't old enough to stay at home by myself I'd have to go with my parents often missing my favorite TV shows! It made me so mad! For years I 'd say "When I grow up I'm going to invent something to record my shows so I can watch them when I get home!" Everybody always looked at me like Yeah Right!
COOL BREEZE
"So ....How do you get the clock to stop flashing twelve o' clock!"
DaVinchi 2-22-02, 02:10 PM In the 80's, the one I remember the most was the VCR. I don't know when it was invented, but cable TV wa great too. In 1983? I remember recording "Raiders of the Lost Ark" from HBO. I thought it was so cool that I could watch it again and again and again...
The80sAngel 2-22-02, 03:21 PM I'd have to say the PC, even thought mine hates my guts. The feeling is mutual. :sneaky: http://www.jordysworld.de/emoticons/wut39.gif
Even though I bytch and complain about the bloody thing though, I couldn't live without it. Right now it's the only way I can afford to keep in touch with my friends and family across the pond, and with all the new friends I've made in my many years online. If it wasn't for computers, I'd either be terribly lonely or deeply in debt. ;)
Iluvthe80s 2-23-02, 09:59 PM This poll is now closed. Our official winner for Best Invention In The 80's is the:
