View Full Version : Texas Longhorns!
I don't know who all is into college football, but I totally am. Signing day yesterday was the best. Texas got great kids to sign with them for the fall. Now granted some of them won't play for 2 years or so, but you never now. Look at Johnson(11) he rocked last season. He was a true freshman.
CAN'T WAIT TILL NEXT SEASON!!!!
HOOK 'EM HORNS!!
18th Century Brain 2-07-02, 10:03 PM I noticed during the bowl games last year that the majority of Texas' players were from in-state. I wish my team (Auburn) would get more of its players from Alabama. I believe it would help the team get fired up more for the traditional rivalries.
That being said, you think ya'll could loan us a quarterback???:D
Mack Brown is good at times to get out of state players. But one thing is we lose alot of excellent players to OU, NEB, LSU, OSU, and Kansas State. Those are the surrounding states. We do lose some to even futher states, but not many.
18th Century Brain 2-07-02, 10:26 PM It's just frustrating when you are playing an in-conference rival, your quarterback is struggling, and the other team's q-back is from your state!! Tubberville is trying to recruit down in Florida, but I think he is overlooking some local talent. Not to mention he is trying to compete with Miami, FL State, and FL. I'm always amazed at how many players come out of that state. I swear they're cloning players down there or something.
space-invader 2-08-02, 06:08 AM can someone explain what the deal is with this college football??
like what's with all these rose, fruit, toilet bowls, etc
and the rating system makes no sense either
majorfan11 2-08-02, 10:36 AM Well sis, you know I can't wait for next season to start either. Even though my man Major won't be playing. But we got some great recruits and I know we'll do well this year. Can't wait for the tail-gating (eating, drinking beer and playing dominoes).
You're right space-invader the rating system sucks. They need to throw out the BCS poll and just stick with the AP Poll.

Wow, how long have you got? LOL
College football (& all college sports)is regulated by the NCAA, a voluntary membership organization for collegiate athletics. Most of the rules are identical to American Pro football (i.e. the NFL) Most teams belong to a conference, which is a group of schools that are usually geographically close. The rating system, called "polls" is entirely subjective. One poll, the Associated Press poll, is voted on by a group of sports jornalists. The ESPN, or "Coaches poll" is voted on by, you guessed it, coaches. These polls often disagree, even as to who is the final #1, which is why the new Bowl Championship Series (or BSC) was instituted by a few major conferences to decide a unanimous winner. Some (including me) still doubt the efficacy of this method. Now about bowl games...
Bowl games were instituted decades ago to reward teams which excelled during the regular season. In the beginning there were only a few, but the number of bowls has grown in the last few years, due to the desire for more revenue. In no way were they originally intended to decide a "national champion", in fact many teams could (& did) claim this distinction each season back then. Today the bowls (with the exception of the BCS) mean little exept to the schools whose teams are playing. It is a source of pride for the fans & athletes, and a source of money for the schools, conferences, the host city, TV networks, etc. It is a contradiction, admitedly, but amateur football is big business in the States. I hope that answers your questions.
space-invader 2-09-02, 02:12 AM thanks for that...but i'm still a little in the dark
say with the rose bowl, is it only the top 2 rated teams that play off in that, or does one team always plays ucla???
a system like that is totally foreign down here and i wasn't living in canada for long enough to figure it out (seems like most people i asked this in canada had no idea either  )
ratings lol...if ratings really meant something in the big show (super bowl), the pats woulda had no hope

I am a college football nut. I eat, sleep, & breathe for football, but esp. college. I even married a football fan. :D
I agree that Mack Brown is one hell of a recruiter, maybe, no probably, the best in the country. But he's going to have to translate that to success on the field (e.g. - Big XII champ, finish in the top 5) soon or your rivals will start to eat away his recruiting base. Texas is rated in the top 5 every preseason, but they seem to alway stumble down the strecth, IMHO. Don't get me wrong, they are a great program with great tradition, but they should be Nat'l Champs with their talent. Hook 'Em Horns! :D
As for Auburn...let's just say I'm a Rebel fan and not a fan of Tubberville. Heh heh. (OK, I'll quit). He's also a dang good recruiter, and the sanctions on Bama and the absence of Spurrier at UF will boost his recruiting power next year. I respect his coaching ability alot, but I'm interested to see how the new coordinators do next year. War Eagle! :D
Look out for Eli next year! :p Oh, and Hotty Toddy! :D

As far as I'm concerned, you can have Tubberville back. 1) I don't trust him (ie Ole Miss) and 2) I don't think he "gets it". He doesn't understand that beating Bama is more important than, say, breathing.
On another topic, did you see the olympic games opening ceremony? Was Uga there? Nope. Smokey? No way. The Alabama pachyderm? Don't think so. The Auburn War Eagle? Hell yeah!!!:D
I thought that was pretty tight how they used him for the opening ceremony at the Olympics. Man, if only the country mascot was a Longhorn. I can dream you know.

LOL! I think the only "it" he gets is the Benjamins. Frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't "jumped ship" again. Good to see he hasn't fooled Auburn fans as bad as he fooled us.

Now I've got to admit that was pretty darn cool to see Tiger in the Opening Ceremonies like that. However, I can't be jealous, since Col. Reb running out there just wouldn't have had the same effect.
