Which one hit wonder would you vote as your favorite?

I went with Mickey!!!

I'm sure you are surprised that I was a Spirit Girl in HS.....and we loved that song to work out to and to use for shows! (I know, Cindi calls me a big dork!!!)

I still have my in-school uniform...with the tight sweater and short little skirt!! I just can't find the pantie-covers that match!!

(p.s. I found you Michael!!! )

Tough choice between Matthew Wilder or Baltimora. I went with Baltimora because it's more fun to dance to when drunk :thumb:

Good question Wonder Twin!!

I voted for Pretty Poison's "Catch Me I'm Falling"! That song just has a great beat and, I have to admit, I like singing along with it. :)

Although I liked Falco's German version better, I liked After the Fire's "Der Kommissar" best out of the songs listed.

Of the songs listed, I selected "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco. It was such an odd little single, and it did very well despite that it sounded absolutely nothing like its contemporaries.

However, that track isn't my true all-time favorite one-hit-wonder of the 80's. It's really tough to say what I'd pick; there were so many neat ones put out by groups we never heard from again. Possibly "Brick" by Fake, or "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" by Dominatrix.

I voted for "Mickey" by Toni Basil. For some reason, I love it. It's just an irresistible catchy pop song. :D

2-07-02, 02:16 PM
Michael, that was a tough decision, I love all those songs! Except I can't quite place "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora.

I voted for "The Promise" because it's my favorite right now, but I could have easily said "Mickey" or "Life in a Northern Town."

I'm glad everyone is having fun with the poll!!!:)

My vote went to Mel & Kim's "Respectable". I just love that song! It's got a great dance beat, fun-to-sing-along lyrics and that wonderful 80s-feel to it. Okay, so Mel & Kim had a minor second hit with "Get Fresh at the Weekend", but "Respectable" is the song that really stands out!

The Promise is one of my favorites, One-Hit or other wise.

All the others could tie for second. Except for Pretty Poison. It was over-played like many OHW and I never re-liked it.

Der Kommisar: After the Fire.

And I preferred this to Falco's German version. I like to be able to sing along and at least have some idea what I'm singing :p

I voted for Matthew Wilders Break my Stride. It is still a happy little song that makes me smile.

It is funny. I always thought that Showing Out was a bigger hit for Mel & Kim than Respectable was. Maybe it is a geographic difference that they are one hit wonders here. I think they had four or five top 10 hits here in Denmark. I remember That's The Way It Is and Fun, Love and Money.

Mel & Kim had a string of hits in New Zealand too. Respectable was probably there biggest one here though.

I went with When In Rome -"The Promise". It brings back memories of a friend that I hung out with back in the day. He loved this song and always played it. He passed away about 7 years ago so now everytime I hear it I think of him. It makes me smile:) :) and think of the good times we had.

Hmmmmm, it was a tough choice for me between "Tarzan Boy" and "Catch Me I'm falling" but like Chopper said TaRZAN boy is fun to dance to(though I've never been drunk dancing to it) so Tarzan Boy would have to be my pick.:)

Tarzan Boy! It's really different, and it has a great beat. And I used to love all my friends trying to sing along when they were drunk. :)

A quality song indeed Sarg, and that is the exact piece of the song that is played over the loudspeakers during the day/night Cricket matches in England when someone makes a big play!

I think its funny that whenever people talk about the song "Tarzan Boy", they always mention the fact that they really enjoy dancing to the song when they are drunk! I guess it just has that beat that makes you want to stagger about!!! :D

I had to go with Puttin on the Ritz by Taco. I remember watching pop-up video on VH-1 that Taco is actually his real name and not a stage name. I thought that bit of info interesting.

I Promise by When In Rome would come in as a close second.

"Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora because I can still audioize it in my head.
Mel & Kim did not get my vote because I believe "Get Fresh For The Weekend" was their actual first hit, not "Respectable".
Those 2 along with "F.L.M." are my favorites all played in a row! (http://www.cdnow.com/from=sr-181894/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=515359992/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=MEL+&+KIM/itemid=430059)

That was such a tough choice!! I went for "The Promise" and seeing the number of votes, it is far more known than i thought! I actually also love "Life in a Northern Town" and "Catch me, I'm falling". I actually like most songs on that list!

And again, here in Austria 2 of these were definatley no one hit wonders. I lost count about how many hits Nena had and Mel&Kim were Top Ten with "Showing Out", "Respectable" and "FLM" as far as i remeber. My Dad always thought they are so cute. :)

The Kid's American by Matthew Wilder followed Break My Stride into the Billboard charts at US#33. None the less, Break My Stride was a good song.

Did you know Matthew Wilder wrote the song Reflection, which was crappy Christina Aguilera's first hit? Do you still like him now?

I went with Mel & Kim's "Respectable" from This list. Catchy dance tune. I think M&K's "Showing Out" got more airplay in Phoenix at the time of release, but both are great tunes. I pretty much dig anything put out by Stock, Aitken & Waterman.

I would dispute certainly that "respectable" is a 1 hit wonder for Mel and Kim. Here in England Mel and Kim are seen as very distinguished icons and somewhat an icon of the 80s. "showing out" was a massive hit of theirs, but also nobody has mentioned "Rockin around the christmas tree", their christmas hit. Have you guys in America heard that? The lyrics are amazin and so funny in places, not only showing Mel and Kim's musical talent but also their awesome sense of humour.

After much deliberation I voted for "99 Luftballons", but again in europe it was not really a one hit wonder. Go to a German speaking country in particular and you will find a massive following for Nena who had many other hits. I just chose "99 Luftballons" because I love the song. It's one of my favourites. I sure hate the English version though because I think the whole sentiment Nena was trying to bring to the song has been lost in translation. The English version is rubbish dont you think?

Anyway, what you guys say to the idea that all the rest of the songs in this poll were one hit wonders (arguably Kommisar wasn't). I reckon the majority of them are but maybe that is just my ignorance. What do you guys reckon?

'Rockin' around the Christmas tree' by Mel and Kim is actually a parady in aid of the charity 'Comic Relief', and was performed by Mel (Smith) and Kim (Wilde).
It reached number 3 in the UK charts in 1987 and so is very much a Mel and Kim 'one hit wonder' (just a different Duo), although both artists had other releases as Mel Smith was one half of comedy duo 'Smith & Jones', both of which were part of the 'Not the nine O'clock news' team.
