View Full Version : Wine Coolers an 80s thing?
Sal Collaziano 10-24-00, 11:27 AM Okay. What about Wine Coolers? Were those Bartles & James and Seagrams coolers something new for the 80s? I'm thinking they were. They were HUGE for awhile. Everybody had a wine cooler in 'em. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Do they even sell wine coolers anymore? We used to drink those or order white wine spritzers when we were underage because it sounded so sophisticated that no one would dare ask us for ID lol.

Sal Collaziano 10-25-00, 02:12 AM Wow! You aren't serious about wine coolers being sold anymore... Are ya? I don't consume sugar anymore but I loved them until I stopped (drinking sugar). They rule! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif its probably that they aren't in my beeline when I hit the store
directly to the vodka, rye, good wine at the back of the store (mmmm) and Mike's Hard Lemonade (oh and Mr. Zel's beer).
Now I'm curious and since its Friday tommorrow - Field trip!

We drank wine coolers all the time when I was a teen. We had "Canada Cooler" here, it was cheap!! They still have them but in a number of different flavours.
Now the thing to drink is tequila and vodka coolers. Don't know what they are like since I haven't drank in 10 years (I was a bad bad girl when I drank http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif )

Wine coolers are alive and well here in teh Mid West. You can get them in about 20 different flavors.
Anbody besides me remember when you could get a 2 LITER bottle of Sun Country Wine Cooler? It came in a green plastic bottle that was almost identical to the Mountain Dew bottle.
A few bucks, a nice girl, a 2 liter of wine cooler. AHHH the summer of 87 was great!

Sal Collaziano 11-04-00, 04:32 AM Yes, wine coolers are still around over here. But since I do the Atkins diet I don't get to have any! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif That's okay though. I'm feeling great.. They taste so damn good though! Strawberry Daquiry, Black Cherry... http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

morningmyst 11-04-00, 02:45 PM We still have the wine coolers over here. I tried one the other day, Black Cherry....for some reason, it didn't quite taste the same as it did those many years ago....maybe that was just me. I think that they taste too "malty" now. IMHO http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

Jazzmyn 11-08-00, 04:55 AM I feel old now. lol I remember the 2 liter bottles of wine coolers. Had forgotten all about those. Also figured out one night that watermelon coolers taste like Jolly Ranchers. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif
Jazzmyn

Sal Collaziano 11-11-00, 01:46 AM haha! Silly's... Well, I've never had the Watermelon flavor. But I can definitely imagine that Jolly Rancher taste. I think it's stupid but when I was growing up, Wine Coolers were for girls and Beer was for guys.. Why would I want a disgusting beer when I can have such a flavorful drink? Wacky!

mrmiata 11-17-00, 05:44 PM In the '80s I was into cheap stuff. Thunderbird or MD20/20. Tickled Pink was good too.
Now I make a beeline for good beer, or I brew my own.
Sal Collaziano 11-17-00, 09:45 PM Hey, MrMiata! I haven't seen you around in awhile.. How's things? What's been doin'?

Skyeswom 12-02-00, 09:28 PM Hi. I'm new here.
Jasper - I remember Sun Country too, cheap and easy to get.
But, when it comes to 80's wine coolers, there's really only two words - Matilda Bay. It was put out by Miller, there was a yellow label and a purple label. Each label was a different flavor, but I don't remember; I think one might have been 'tropical' or something like that. It went down much easier than the fruit/berry flavors.
One of my friends still drinks wine coolers on a regular basis. I've moved on to beer.

JeniferLyn 12-21-00, 12:10 PM OOOHHHH wine coolers!! I lived off of them! Back in 1990, at the ripe old age of 17, I attempted to but a 2 liter of Bartles and James, and I ended up getting arrested!! Come to find out, the little corner store was having a sting operation going on by the local police. They busted over 90 teens over a 3 day weekend, and they ended up losing their licenses for more than 3 months!! I, on the other hand did not lose my license because I was about to turn 18, and the law is different for 18 year olds. The attorney didn't hurt my case either.
I also used to drink Boones Strawberry Hills, god you could really puke up some friday night party food after drinking that. YUCK!!!
What was that stuff with everclear in it? Purple passion or something like that? I used to get that up in Chicago. I kind of switched to Zimas now. I'm sure I'll have to get some when I take my next vacation.http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//wink.gif

morningmyst 12-22-00, 04:23 PM I've been trying to think of another brand that was really popular. There was Bartles & James, Seagrams and California Coolers. Those are the ones that I really liked. In fact, I had the worlds coolest mom. She'd go out and buy me wine coolers. As long as I stayed home and drank them. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//00drunk.gif

Gosh i remember my friends and I sitting around drinking wine coolers at about 15 yrs old SHHH....dont tell mom, LOL I remember it used to come in a 2 liter bottle, lol Another big thing that we used to frequent alot was Little Kings, does anyone remember those? I used to hide them inside my leather jacket, LOL boy i was so bad as a teenager. :mwaha:
Annette
80sTrivia 1-07-04, 07:53 PM I loved wine coolers! (Still do!) Seagram's used to make these wonderful flavors: Peach Melba Rum, Tequila Sunrise Surprise and one with gin (don't remember what it was called). They were all delicious and I would have to get my older sister to buy me some as I wasn't of legal age during the 80s! :drunk:
Slayergrrl 1-07-04, 07:54 PM I never understood why wine coolers came in packs of 4. Beer comes in 6 packs. I never saw a guy drinking a wine cooler. We used to drink Sisco (Made people violent) and Purple Passion. I actually saw a 1 liter bottle of purple passion in the LQ the other day. I almost bought it until i remembered it made me violently ill the last time i drank it. But all in all i'm a beer girl give me an amstel light or a pete's strawberry blonde and I'm happy. :)
Caligula 1-07-04, 08:16 PM I remember the first time I saw coolers, a girl I knew was at the ball field drinking them. I havn't drank that many in my life, always a beer drinker, but I did get sick off of drinking barberrian (berry coolers) in 2 litre bottles , all over the floor of a hotel when I was away at a ball tournement.
Rhelawen 1-07-04, 08:50 PM When I was around 15 years old, the local corner store sold these coolers called Sarasoda. They were malt coolers (0.5% alcohol content), if I recall correctly, and were quite citrusy-tasting. I just loved them. Haven't seen them since, though.
KimJoy69 1-07-04, 10:40 PM ROTFLMAO! Thanks for bringing back memories of puking in psychedelic colors!! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/rofl5.gif Soon as the puking was over, we'd head out to Waffle House for a patty melt and scattered, smothered, and covered hashies!! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/rofl5.gif Ohhhhh GAWD!! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/rofl5.gif
I was never a big wine cooler fan. Although, I did used to like Zima when it first came out. We used to drink Cisco (it was nicknamed "Liquid Crack" here in DC) and Jungle Juice :p One thing I never could hang with was Mad Dog 20/20. It made me hork everytime :yucky:
I'm a beer & wine drinker. Hand me a New Castle & I'll be just peachy! ;)
I remember that weird fruity, carbonated taste, and after drinking 2 or 3, a slight buzz that lasted probably 5 minutes. is it for the taste or what?
Johnny Z 1-08-04, 05:15 PM Wine coolers? Ecchh! :yucky:
I never did like 'em. I think they were just too sweet for my taste. I like the flavored malt beverages that are around today, though.
One of my friends told me that Cisco had (I hope he's wrong about this) formaldehyde in it to give it a lingering flavor on your tongue. Formaldehyde is Baaad stuff to drink, as is Purple Passion, which is Everclear brand but makes a point of excluding Everclear as an ingredient on the label. The real one people should be trying to remember is Champale. I believe that Champale is the original wine cooler brand, and I'm pretty sure that it does not exist any more at all. I don't remember much about Champale, but I do remember Bartles & Jaymes commercials: "We thank you for your support."
Metalfan83 1-10-04, 02:53 AM The only thing I remember about wine coolers is my mom and one of her friends getting drunk on them and doing cartwheels down the street in Macomb at around 2 A.M.
Oh yes the Coolers. B&J. I drank them to relieve stress when I was in the ARMY.
Ladyofthe80s 1-10-04, 05:10 PM They still sell wine coolers in the grocery stores here in Cal. Wow, I had forgotten all about the 2 liters of wc and of Purple Passion. Don't think I've seen that stuff since high school.
I remember no one wanted the peach wine coolers. Same for peach schnapps.
galaga-girl 1-11-04, 06:02 AM wine = :barf:
I hate wine, and wine coolers, my flatmate still buys them and there is one in the fridge right now!! Peach wine cooler is what it is called.
I used to love wine coolers. Now, I drink stuff like Smirnoff Ice..and Mike's Hard Lemonade. And I love champagne or a good wine. Only thing is, when I drink I tend to sing and it is not very good.
My bud's and I made our own actually. We would buy that wine in a box. Like 5 gallons. 7up and some fresh fruit. Hey that sounds good.......
I also used to drink Boones Strawberry Hills, god you could really puke up some friday night party food after drinking that. YUCK!!!
What about Mad Dog 20/20???? OOhh, and sisco
tonepoet 1-17-04, 01:32 PM Yeah, wine coolers were great, you could drink them with the girls (not like a Zima or something), and not get drunk. The girls would get trashed and start becoming a bit 'friendly'. Good stuff! :thumb:
Darrianne 1-30-04, 06:37 PM Away with that! No wine coolers for me! Gimme something I can get drunk on! In the 80's, that is. Now, I like an occasional Bacardi Silver (gooood) but I always preferred harder stuff than a wine cooler in the 80's... :mwaha:
