View Full Version : Go li'l Camaro go...
80sSmurf 8-22-01, 09:27 PM I just realized that many of my fellow xchangers must've obtained their driver's license in the 80s, and that made me curious...
What car did u have in the 80s?
And what was ur fave car from back then ??
Dancingdoll1986 8-22-01, 09:44 PM I had an '84 silver corvette that I got on my 16th birthday. I had it till I went to Kent State, where freshman couldn't have cars. Then my brother got it.
My favorite car I have ever had was my '89 Electric Blue Pontiac Grand Am. Don't know why, it just rocked!! (I did put it up on a tree stump, but that is another story!!)

Iluvthe80s 8-22-01, 10:10 PM I am curious dancingdoll, why couldn't freshmen have cars? That is kinda unfair.
wavemaster 8-22-01, 10:21 PM My first car...aside of all the Matchbox models... :D
A few weeks before my 18th B-day, I bought a ´73 Ford Escort 1300 GT for the unbelievably price of 30 DM (ca. 15$) and a bottle of wine. 280,000 km on the clock and the whole rear end plastered with GFK, oh my...
Four days later, the car was history when the transmission failed.
Fav car...I guess everyone wanted a VW Golf GTI, but I preferred the Opel Kadett GSI 16V as it had a cool LCD display unit and 150hp.
Cars I´ve owned during the last two years of the 80s...
Datsun Y 100 ´72- short and ugly, but 4 doors and ran like hell. Earned me my first ticket when the exhaust pipe fell off the same moment the cops passed by. Lasted 4 months until the brakes failed (luckily, that happened at 2:00 am). :D
Opel Kadett Caravan ´75 - most far away from the sporty cruisers my friends drove, but very practical and reliable. Tuned the engine from the original 52 to 70 hp, more tickets. After 90,000 km, rear axle fixings decayed to dust.
Opel Commodore 2.8 GSE ´75 - equipped it with a 3 litre engine and approx. 200 hp. Painted it in matt black...a real monster. Sold it as I couldn´t afford a major revision of the body (in fact...I never thought it could be revived again ;) ).
Opel Ascona 240i ´80 - a lucky win...the pre-owner thought he ruined the engine. A gasket kit fixed the problem. Derived from a rally car, it was definite fun to drive. Sold it because of my g/f.
Silveradocruiser 8-22-01, 10:28 PM I posted this topic called "Favourite 80s ride" a while back...You might wanna check it out! Also a topic on what cars the members have...I just don't remember what it was called..
Well, since I'm Your regular car freak, I thought I'd let Ya know!
And yeah...My first car was a Mazda pick up truck, and my fave 80s car would probably be the Porche 911 Turbo convertible...
71 Nova. I picked it up with my Father for $500. She was in rough shape and thats where I learned how to work on cars. It's more of a hobby today than a requirement but I still love to turn wrenches.
jess
Dancingdoll1986 8-23-01, 10:46 PM Iluv80s~ I think that Kent was just stupid!! Actually, if you were a freshman living closer than 50 miles away, you weren't allowed to have a car. If you lived beyond that, you could. The campus wasn't really equipped with a whole lot of parking spots, and I am sure that seniority took over in that regard.
I was truly bummed out!
As far as my Grand Am...I went onto eBay tonight, and under eBay Motors, I looked under Pontiac Grand Am, and the 1st 1989 car was MY CAR!!!! The colors, everything. I am SO tempted to bid on it. Though I really want the Ford Contour SVT supercharged. That's what I am dreaming of!!

Sal Collaziano 8-23-01, 11:13 PM Well, I love cars. So I'll go through it a little. My first was a $300.00 1970 Chevy Nova in almost mint condition. This was in September of 1989. It had less than 90,000 miles on it. Pretty good for 20 years old. My favorite car of the 80s was an Iroc-Z. I loved those. I never had one. I did have a 1990 Trans Am in white. That was awesome. I had LOTS of cars. Another favorite was a 1988 Firebird Formula. I had a 1986 Z28. I had a few Cadillacs...
First was a beat up old Ford pickup. The folks said I didn't need anything nice cause I would wind up destroying it anyway. How right they were! My favorite was my Mazda RX7. God, I loved that car! The rotary engine just wouldn't stop on that car. It was faassssstttt! Wish I still had it.
I had waaaay too many cars to count, but in high school, I had only three. My favorite was my 69 Impala Custom.
Sal, I just sold my 88 Formula last week! That's because I also have the Caddy STS, but you knew that already :D
Caligula 8-24-01, 10:06 PM my first car that was also a Nova, 75 man did it ever rust. I got caught spinning the tires on the school ground by the vice principal and could not park in the school parking lot ever again
Iluvthe80s 8-24-01, 11:27 PM I didn't get my license till the 90's. (Yes, I got it later than most.) My first car that was all mine was a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird. I had a car that was part mine bought together with my ex that was a '79 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (I guess technically that was my first car.)
LOL@caligula
That reminded me of my 68 New Yorker that I had in high school. Me and two friends were at a school one night. I was burning the tires off of the car(440 TNT engine) with one friend in the car and the third driving over my car with his motorcycle. Yes, all over the car! The smoke was soooo thick I couldn't see the lights on the police cruiser as they pulled up :D
Well, needless to say, it was a lesson well learned ;) What a post apocalyptic sight it was, though. Oh yeah, and expensive, as I did remove a good portion of the speedbump!

My parents had a '73 Nova when I was a little Mary. My mom affectionately called it "Your Dad's Shitbox." hehe
In the 80s, we had... (All bought used, or handed down from dead relatives!)
* 70something red Ambassador 2-door, which lasted about 3 months and then the transmission croaked...
* '77 (?) Mercury Monarch four door, metallic rust-red
* '79 Mazda wagon, white, mostly held together with Bondo.
* '86 Cavalier wagon, metallic baby shit brown with orange pinstripes. That car lasted until '96... a miracle.
From '96 to '99, I owned an '88 Olds Calais, a blue two-door. I loved my Oldsmobeast and was very sad when it died and the repair bills were worth more than the car. That car went through starters and alternators like they were candy. Thanks to some tough negotiating :D I got them to take the dead Olds as a trade-in, sight unseen, pay to tow it to the dealership, and give me $500 toward my new Toyota. Ha, Ha!!
I love my Corolla, but it just doesn't have the 80s vibe that the Oldsmobeast did. *sigh* I'm going to spiff it up with one of those Autobot stickers and start calling it Sideswipe!
I had a FOrd Escort. http://www.AnimierteGif.de/Smilies/Smilies_auto/auto.gif I can't remember the year of the car but i loved it simply because it was mine. It even had a sun roof. I cruised everywhere with it, and even tried to out run the cops with it. http://www.AnimierteGif.de/Smilies/Smilies_auto/iroc-cop.gif Seriously..
80sSmurf 8-30-01, 06:05 PM I just bet u did :D
I always had a thing for Camaros (hence the thread title) and Ford Mustangs :)
When I get my driver's license in 2 months time, I think I'll have to settle for a VW Golf or Polo, or maybe a Opel Corsa :)
I think Opel is what the rest of the world know as Vauxhaul.
I had many vehicles in the 80's...but my two favorites were my 1977 Trans Am, with the bird on the hood removed an a black widow spider mural painted on in its place, and my 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1. Oh, how I miss those cars! :(

I finally got MY driver's license on February 1, 1994--and at the age of 23.
:( :( :( :( :(
I just said this in another thread but I'm getting so close to 500 so...
Blue 82 Toyota Corolla SR-5 :)
Are/were American-made cars available in Europe?

Yes...the Big Three are selling some American iron here.
GM has the Camaro with 6-cylinder engine and the Corvette as closed and convertible models, plus the Blazer and the S-10 pickups.
Chrysler offers the widest range, from the Neon over the Sebring to the PT Cruiser and the Voyager van.
Ford offers the Windstar and the Maverick.
A few importers offer models as long as they can be converted to German street legality (means changing headlights and speedometer etc.).
cs01001000 12-24-01, 01:08 PM most universities require that freshman NOT have vehicles, for the simple reason that they want the freshman to succeed in college, not spend all their time having fun off campus. i'm sure there's a little motivation behind this "caring", because it means the student will be paying for three or four more years of college. i really think it's a great idea, considering how punkish and troublesome today's teenagers tend to be. that's just my opinion, though.
I wanted a "candy apple red" Camaro.
I got a brown Chevy Vega.
Oh well, at least I'm driving my dream car now. :D
I wanted a New Mits 3000 GT VR-4
I got an Old Olds Cutlas Calais
Oh well, someday I'll punish my kids (need wife) the same way! :D
Iluvthe80s 12-25-01, 05:04 AM I want a new Dodge Dakota or a Nissan Frontier Truck. I have had my little '95 Ford Aspire now for almost 5 years and I want a new automobile. :)
I also like the classic Mustangs too and the '67 Mercury Cougars. I wouldn't mind one of those again.

They both are Chevy´s, ain´t they?
Oh wavey... a Vega is a Chevrolet, but it is not a Chevy, man! :D
Iluvthe80s 12-30-01, 12:01 PM Yes they are, wave!:)

Wowzers!!! Someone was spoiled. From my Math you would've got that brand new on your Sweet 16 (or very slightly used).
Christine 8-23-04, 02:35 PM I didn't get my first car in the 80's (obviously), I got it last year - or rather I should say, got to drive it. (It's my mom's.) A beautiful 1987 Vanden Plas Jaguar in this cool gray/green color. I love it so much - but finally the mechanical issues with it got to be too much. It turned into a kind of deathtrap - you could barely drive it in the rain and the power steering was about to fail. Now I drive a gray 2004 Ford Escape. But I do miss my Jag!
Attached is a photo of me when I was 4 standing in front of the car I would later end up driving! We bought it used in 1990.
