View Full Version : Most Terrifying Horror Movie Sarg 2-03-02, 09:21 PM Which horror movie terrified you the point of losing sleep? Iluvthe80s 2-03-02, 10:04 PM I picked "The Exorcist" because it is one of the greatest scary movies of all time. When I was little though, "Halloween" used to scare me, but not now. battle angel alita 2-03-02, 10:06 PM I had to vote for Children of the Corn only because I had to walk home two days before halloween and the wind was blowing so hard that I thought I heard the creepy song. I didn't sleep for weeks. LOL:eek: Trixter 2-03-02, 10:12 PM I had to vote other. My vote went to Stanley Kubrik's "The Shining". This movie terrified me! I was living in Colorado Springs at the time and I thought the Overlook Hotel was nearby and actually it was the sprawling hotel The Broadmoor. This movie still gives me chills! It's the best! "Halloween" is a close second!! ValJ 2-03-02, 10:35 PM The Exorcist, definitely! Freaked me out! lol I'd have to say, though, it's tied with the first A Nightmare On Elm Street. Caligula 2-03-02, 10:39 PM I voted for the Exorcist, I found that and the Omen from the 70's were alot more frightening than the 80's slasher films Recker 2-03-02, 10:40 PM I voted without noticing the category of "other" down the bottom, so I voted for A Nightmare on Elm Street. When that came out at the movies it was pretty scarey and there was so much screaming going on around me, that my nerves were totally frayed afterwards. A may have voted for "Night of the Living Dead", but I felt that the second in the series "Dawn of the Dead" was scarier. "Dawn of the Dead" would have been my pick if I had voted "other". angeleyes25 2-03-02, 10:44 PM I voted for other.Last House On The Left scared me to death when I was a kid. Roemello 2-04-02, 12:18 AM Nightmare on Elm Street for me....I saw that at a young age and paid the price  Thankfully the sequals turned out to be funny, so it didn't last :D Westend Girl 2-04-02, 01:50 AM The exorcist scared me very much. I did not sleep for many nights after watching it. I always find something else to watch when they show it on tv now. Therrall 2-04-02, 02:21 AM I chose other because none of these movies really scared me that much, I always loved horror movies and wasn't easily frightened. tripenvalgirl 2-04-02, 02:24 AM I chose "The Exorcist" Even though it doesn't really fit into today's standards--it's still won my vote. It was a tossup for me actually between The Exorcist and to pick other--for Rosemary's Baby. Recker 2-04-02, 05:37 AM Originally posted by Therrall I chose other because none of these movies really scared me that much, I always loved horror movies and wasn't easily frightened. It's certainly a pity when a horror doesn't actually have anything horrific in it. It's getting harder and harder these days to find a really scarey movie. Tinajo 2-04-02, 11:41 AM I totally PICKED "The Exorcist" I remember as a kid watching it.. my sister is 6 years older than me and I must have been 8 when she MADE me watch it! I was terrified.. I can still scare myself to this day if I am in bed sleeping and I have a bad dream.. when I try to get back to sleep I almost instinctively think of Exorcist scenes.. and the harder I try not to think about it, the more I do! I'll see her face with her head turned all the way around.. I'm such a freak! I own the movie now, with the new footage... just to prove that I can handle it, I have watched it at least once every year since I was about 18... It's still scary  Sarg 2-04-02, 11:07 PM My wife and I are big horror movie fans, but the "Exorcist" was one movie that effected us both for days after seeing it. We saw the movie on the big screen when it came out in theaters and I remember before going into the theater seeing an ambulance standing outside, and asked one of the attendants at the theater what it was there for, they said that in the days before we went some people had heart attacks during the movie. After seeing it I understood why. cultleader 2-06-02, 04:57 PM I definatly have to go with Night of the Living Dead and Phantasm, these two movies are still two of my favorites. Not Man 2-06-02, 07:33 PM Definitely The Exorcist   Originally posted by Tinajo I own the movie now, with the new footage... just to prove that I can handle it, I have watched it at least once every year since I was about 18... It's still scary  I have it on dvd also.....love the crab walk scene. space-invader 2-07-02, 02:59 AM i voted exorcist but i didn't really find it very scary...i tend to find most of them amusing such as friday 13th, hellraser, and don't forget the super comedy horror evil dead! and night of the living dead...lol...isn't that the one where one of the zombie's head gets sliced by a helecopter blade? i find an old classic such as phycho more terrifying LadyMysTrix 2-11-02, 02:26 AM I voted Other since you didn't include The Amittyville Horror. As a kid I confused the dad (James Brolin) from the movie with the dad (Michael Landon) from Little House on the Prairie, which was one of my favorite shows. I actually didn't watch Little House for awhile because of my confusion. It's weird though, because the only nightmares I recall having involved the dog in the cellar scene. That Guy Next Door 2-11-02, 11:15 AM Well, i picked Hellraise cause it does not have the most horrifyinf munstas but it works in world with different logic. Pain becomes pleasure and if ya get in the mind of a cenobite, it all makes sense to torture others. It's reversed moral, total loss of moral cue. it's what's frightening, it's hedonism pushed to its furthest. Come to think of it, it culture clash to its max, where we see evil, they see salvation. It's the all dissolution of our valur that's interesting. We try to forget pain, flesh, and they worship it ! I think this makes it one of the most horrifying concept someone could come up with.... in my opinion. " Yer suffering.... will be legendary...... even in hell " - pinhead " TGND " Rampaging Mutant Cannibal Looney Tunes" Sara Smile 2-11-02, 01:48 PM Hellraiser!!!! :vibrator:  I still get chills thinking of those demons. The guy with the pins is creepy. Recker 2-11-02, 03:53 PM Nice evaluation TG! One thing is for sure that movie was highly original and very creepy. That Pinhead sure is one warped creature! TopCat 2-11-02, 04:48 PM Originally posted by Not Man love the crab walk scene. [/B] That's the scariest things I seen in awhile!! I will NEVER rent that movie..EVER! again!  I voted for Excorist. Mystery Woman 2-13-02, 02:37 AM I voted "other", because I think Dawn of the Dead is the scariest horror movie I've seen. It was one of the first I ever watched, and I saw it at the drive-in. Being in the car with people walking around during the movie added to the ambience. I've seen it tons of times since, and it still manages to make my skin crawl. . You just don't get horrors like that these days! George A Romero was a master at manipulating your emotions with that movie. One moment it was funny, the next horrifying, backwards and forwards from one emotion to the other! space-invader 2-13-02, 05:21 AM maybe i should watch these films by myself in a quiet dark room instead of watching it at a mates house sinking piss:lol: Tinajo 2-13-02, 09:18 AM Originally posted by Not Man Definitely The Exorcist   I have it on dvd also.....love the crab walk scene. NotMan.. You know in the crab walk scene where when she gets to the bottom of the stairs she spits blood from her mouth? In the origional cut (They still may have the video up on thei website although I saw this a while back before the re-release came out), when she gets to the bottom, she flips over and crawls around on the floor after them with her tongue coming in and out like a snake.. That was pretty eerie to see as well.. but in a way it seemed comical... I'm glad they ditched it and ended up with the scene they have now... but if you haven't seen that cut of it, I'll try to find the download for you... Darkside 3-03-02, 08:01 PM The Exorcist 80sTrivia 4-02-02, 10:23 AM Definitely Nightmare on Elm Street. I didn't sleep for a week or so after seeing the movie. Everytime I closed my eyes, I would see the image of Johnny Depp being pulled into the matress by Freddy Krueger and erupting into a geyser of blood... Traumatizing!!! Trixter 4-02-02, 10:30 AM Originally posted by Tinajo NotMan.. You know in the crab walk scene where when she gets to the bottom of the stairs she spits blood from her mouth? Tinajo, I don't remember the snake bit, but I do recall the crab walk/spider walk scene. Which edition is this on? sassy 4-02-02, 11:53 AM I voted for other. The scariest movie for me was Willy Wonka And the Chocolate Factory:eek:  That movie still scared the bejesus out of me. It was on a few weeks ago and the kids wanted to watch it with me. You should have seen me:lol: I was trying to be brave.. but I kept making up excuses to leave the room. 80sSmurf 4-02-02, 12:29 PM Other... Salem's lot...Didn't think the book was scary, but the flik  ....and my second vote (yes I'm imagining things I know :D ) goes to Invasion of the bodysnatchers (the '76 version)... this charming man 4-02-02, 04:51 PM I voted for other, The Evil Dead is probably the scariest film I saw. Flix 4-06-02, 02:29 PM I voted for Hellraiser. That movie just freaks me out. Greenway88 5-01-02, 10:21 AM Psycho Pippi 6-04-02, 02:56 PM Hellraiser :vibrator:  That pinhead guy is a creepy cousin. DC Rebel 6-04-02, 04:10 PM I would have to say that Children of the Corn was the movie that terrified me the most. I saw it for the first time at my Uncle's house and he had a farm. Sheibub 6-07-02, 01:44 AM Definitely the Exorcist. The others are laughable, whether it be from comedy or being B-grade. Dawn 6-07-02, 03:09 AM Some of these I haven't seen, some scared me (but not to the point of losing sleep) and some I just laughed at, but "Children of the Corn" just FREAKED me out!!! I still can't watch that one!!! LOSTNTHE80S 5-28-03, 03:10 PM I had to go with NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET... I didn't watch another horror movie for years after seeing it. Slayergrrl 5-28-03, 04:27 PM The exorcist!!! Still scares the ever loving hell outta me!!!! djze 5-28-03, 06:07 PM Being raised Catholic i had to pick The Exorcist obviously, horror movies with religious themes leave me in a awkward place mentally where i have to keep telling to myself "it's just a movie" Jasper 5-28-03, 07:07 PM I voted for NIghtmare on Elm Street, simply because, (1) Freddy scred the $hit out of me, and (2) upon renting the exorcist this past spring and watching it, it dawned on me that the movie is sorta slow, and not really all that scarey when you are older. At least that was my take on it. I remember it scared me to death as a 12 year old, but, at thirtysomething, it isnt that bad. Blitzburgh87 5-28-03, 10:36 PM Originally posted by Sheibub Definitely the Exorcist. The others are laughable, whether it be from comedy or being B-grade. I agree! ImSoooSure 5-29-03, 01:46 AM The Exorcist definately scared me the most. That movie is timeless as far as scare the pants off ya scary movies go! leeney_b 5-29-03, 02:07 AM The scariest movies for me are: 1. The Sixth sense 2. The Others 3. Evil Dead The Sixth Sense was so creepy, because it's something that can happen to any of us...esp. those who have chosen to open their third eye. For weeks, I couldnt get out of my room in the middle of the night...bathroom trips had to be made earlier, middle-of-the-night food cravings were put on hold, and lights had to remain on for the rest of the night. That is one scary flick! Raine 5-29-03, 10:31 PM I don't scare easy, so most horror movies, to me, are NOT scary. The Ring was supposed to be scary, but it did nothing for me. Identity was the closest I have seen in a long time that actually made me feel something other than amusement. It was not scary as much as a very "tense" movie. I think if I had to pick the scaries movie I have ever seen it would have to be Silence of the Lambs. Or maybe Omen. I haven't seen Omen since I was young, but that movie scared the bejesus out of me! I don't know if it would now. Rhelawen 5-30-03, 01:59 AM A Nightmare on Elm Street scared the crap out of me when I was younger. I was terrified to go to sleep for days after seeing it. PG 6-15-03, 06:17 PM I chose "other" because the movie that gave me nightmares & freaked me out the most was Amityville Horror followed closely by The Changeling..... The movie The Exorcist wasn't nearly as scary as the book! Pagan 6-16-03, 10:24 AM "Night of the Living Dead" or "The Exorcist". I grew up right near St. Raymond's cemetary, the largest cemetary in NY, so the thought of people rising up to make me part of the menu was pretty creepy! andiegirl 6-16-03, 11:53 AM The Exorcist. I still will NOT watch it to this day. Recker 6-17-03, 03:59 AM Originally posted by Jasper upon renting the exorcist this past spring and watching it, it dawned on me that the movie is sorta slow, and not really all that scarey when you are older. My thoughts exactly. I didn't see this until my late teens and apart from a few scarey bits it was a bit of a yawner. electronic BEATS 6-17-03, 01:06 PM Other: One of the most terrifying movies I've EVER seen is DAY OF THE DEAD. The atmosphere of impending doom and total hopelessness is what gets me. A real classick! LivinOnAPrayer83 6-29-03, 12:24 PM The scariest movies for me were the Hellraisers. Something about the death scenes, the torture, everything like that. I also loved, but was petrified by, the puppet master series. That one drill guy that had at it with the man's crotch. Ewwwwwwwwww. BishounenRocker 7-12-03, 03:38 PM Originally posted by LivinOnAPrayer83 The scariest movies for me were the Hellraisers. Ewwwwwwwwww. Gee, looks like I am in the same boat with you. Talk about senseless horror. I do like horror when it's done within reason. It should make sense to the story. With Hellraiser it's all about trying to push your tolerance level before you go.... :ill: :barf: It's not interesting. Now, David Cronenberg's The Fly. Now there is a fine horror film. :D  Foreigner 7-14-03, 08:10 PM i think hellraiser is creepy but what really freaked me out was a nightmare on elm street,,,, candy man should have been in there too cause that was scary too spookycooky 7-14-03, 09:30 PM How about 'The Changeling' , not as graphic as the listed movies but really got into my id. A traditional genre ghost story homaged by a fair few contemporary film makers. It upset my underpants for months. RedRocketRetro 7-15-03, 03:00 PM I voted Exorcist.... Watched it for the first time last year just before I had to go work the graveyard shift... walking thru the pitch black stockroom later that night I swore I heard noises & scared the **** out of myself :-O LadyM 7-16-03, 03:50 PM The Exorcist, hands down! I have mentioned in another thread once before how terrified I am of that movie even today. All it took was 5 minutes of watching it with my dad when i was a teenager and it just completely terrified me forever! I can't stand to even HEAR it or even see a commerical, a spoof, a behind the scenes..NOTHING...its that bad for me,lol. All the others mentioned in here have kinda scared me or have been laughable...but that one just is something I gotta stay away from. Hubby thinks I should "face my fear" and watch it one night..NO WAY.. not if he wants to put up with my nightmares for 6 months again..lol! I tried to watch it once with him and before 5 minutes into it i was literally crying and begging him to turn it..which he did..he could see how bad it was effecting me. I know its only a movie, but it deeply disturbs me. Most other horror movies i can watch at midnight with all the lights off..but that one..heck I wont even watch at ALL! Jefferson Starship 7-21-03, 12:11 AM I vote other. Don't know if some of you know Dario Argento but he did a lot of great movies also a few in the 80s like Opera, Phenomena, Inferno and also Suspiria (1976)... i'm a huge fan of his films and his movies are scared as hell! :( :ego: :goofy: :vibrator:  kangaRoos 8-12-03, 01:42 PM It's a tossup between the first Nightmare on Elm Street and Excorcist. The other one that used to scare me was Happy Birthday to Me. I don't know why. Cru Jones 8-19-03, 10:38 AM Im gonna' have to go with Freddy on this one. Those claws oozed evil!! A close runner-up would have to be the Omen. just the thought of a dad having to kill their son with those sharp-pointy daggers used to ruin perfectly good dreams for me! diezman 8-21-03, 02:43 AM I'm an oldster here  I have to go with The Exorcist. A few movies have kept me up at night, namely The Evil Dead, Phantasm (saw it in a theater) and the original Nightmare on Elm Street. One that comes to mind also is a movie I saw when I was a little kid. It was an ABC Movie of the Week back in 1973. It was called Don't be Afraid of the Dark. Anyone who saw this movie back then was scarred for life! Pinkerbell 8-27-03, 11:25 AM I tell ya, the Exorcist scared the Bejesus out of me, but Final Destination 2 just absolutely FREAKED ME OUT! It wasn't scary, but the whole way home my friends and I were seriously weirded out!! Junior 2-02-04, 11:35 AM There is only 2 movies that I consider SCARY.... 1. The Exorcist 2. The Shining These movies just CREEP ME OUT even today I get skiddish when I watch them!!!! galaga-girl 2-02-04, 05:40 PM The scarriest movie of all time for me is The Entity, i can't bring myself to ever watch that movie again in my life. It scared the hell out of me :uhoh: Another movie that scared me too was Blair Witch, a lot of people didn't like it because no one ever "saw" the witch, but what made it scary was that in my mind it was my worst fear that i saw. Does that make sense? XXX 2-06-04, 08:56 AM I vote other. Don't know if some of you know Dario Argento but he did a lot of great movies also a few in the 80s like Opera, Phenomena, Inferno and also Suspiria (1976)... i'm a huge fan of his films and his movies are scared as hell! :( :ego: :goofy: :vibrator:  He also directed The Bird With The Crystal Plummage, Profondo Rosso, Tenebrae, and a whole lotta others. I mainly watch them for nostalgic value since those were the horror flix they used to show on TV at night when I was a kid. Scariest horror movie I saw as a kid was Salem's Lot. It took me YEARS to sleep by a window after watching that movie :ill: :vibrator: The other one that used to scare me was Happy Birthday to Me. I don't know why. Scream is a polished version of J. Lee Thompson's slasher classic from 1980. PG 2-06-04, 10:37 AM He also directed The Bird With The Crystal Plummage, I love that movie :) Scariest horror movie I saw as a kid was Salem's Lot. It took me YEARS to sleep by a window after watching that movie :ill: :vibrator: GREAT movie!! And yes, that kid in the window still scares me to this day! Does anyone remember a movie called, "Bad Ronald"? That movie freaked the sh!t out of me. :ill: Adreyn 2-07-04, 01:35 AM :yikes: Amityville Horror!! I woke up everynight for 2 weeks at 3 am. Adrienne surfnut 2-07-04, 02:23 AM To this day I still have NIGHTMARES of the EXORCIST!!!!!!! Shakey 2-07-04, 01:54 PM Could have sworn I voted in this when it first came out, but since I didn't see my post, I'll do it again. My vote goes to "Prince of Darkness! Creepiest movie ever! BoyScoutKevin 2-17-04, 02:34 PM While there has yet to be a horror movie that has kept me awake at night, and while I have yet to see every movie listed on this poll, of all those I have seen, none of them are as scary as "Lair of the White Worm," especially, the scene that has Kevin (Pitt) the scout or boy scout in the film, standing by the side of the road in the rain, trying to hitch a ride. When I saw him standing there, it was like someone kicked me in the gut, because I knew everything that was going to happen to him, and I was right, for those of you who haven't seen the movie. whistledog 10-23-04, 10:53 PM Phantasm still gives me chills :scared: SouthernImage 10-24-04, 02:47 AM The Exorcist. It was an ABC Movie of the Week back in 1973. It was called Don't be Afraid of the Dark. Anyone who saw this movie back then was scarred for life! I think I saw this one,is that the one where at the end the creatures are pulling the woman into a hole or something and all she has is the flash bulb of a camera to try to get her away?If it's the same one,it really freaked me out as a kid.One that freaked me out also when I was a kid was this fick from the 70's called Gargoyles.Anyone remember that one? bookmistres4ever 10-27-04, 04:18 PM Does anyone remember a movie called, "Bad Ronald"? That movie freaked the sh!t out of me. :ill: I have a copy of this on DVD, my hubby said I'd like it, and I did. I'm not a real big fan of gore, although I admire the Nightmare on Elm Street series and their creative way of killing off their characters. Even though it's not *really* scary, I hate the Friday the 13th series. Several years ago, I was watching one at a friend's house, then another friend called and asked if I'd go pick them up at their house. I didn't really know where I was going, and you had to drive through these dark, fairly deserted country roads to get there. By the time I got to their house, I was really creeped out. My frist husband made me watch most of the Ft13th series so I know it's not too bad now. It was just the combination of things that made it scary. Another one that was kinda icky was Wishmaster. Nikki_91 10-27-04, 08:39 PM Halloween was my favorite. I watch it every year around this time. I remember it's the first movie that scared me. Tanya1976 11-11-04, 01:18 AM The Exorcist b/c it's too real! tick28 8-31-07, 12:54 AM still to this day friday the 13th scares me. love halloween, phatasism and hell raiser. remember puppet master leadsled 9-04-07, 09:58 PM Can't say any on that list did that too me, but I did see Jaws in the theaters, and since we went to the beach on a regular basis, it scared the beejuses out of me! I had a raft exactly like the one the little boy who gets attacked near the beginning has! I do love horror movies especially the ones of the 70s and 80s, not so much the newer ones, they are far few between! tick28 9-05-07, 06:12 PM remember jaws. scared the crap out of me. i was afraid to go in the lake for weeks. even though there are no sharks in fresh water except for the missippi, i did not care. Recker 9-05-07, 11:06 PM Yep, decent horrors these days are far and few between. I guess it's all been done before. tick28 9-05-07, 11:17 PM true. it's hard to find a good scary movie these days |
