Jan. : The "Neue Deutsche Welle" (NDW) started the invasion of the German charts.
Jan, 1: Greece becomes the 10th full member of the European Community (in case you´re wondering now: since Germany is also a member of the EC, this affects Germany as well).
Feb. : Pink Floyds rock opera "The Wall" was shown on 6 evenings in Dortmund.
Feb 28: Over 80,000 peaple are gathering in Brokdorf to protest aginst the future site of a nuclear power plant. The police has closed the construction site in a wide circle, so virtually none of the protesters had reached it.
Mar. 6: Marianne Bachmeier shoots the suspected murder of her seven year old daughter in the hall of the Lübeck jury court. This case of self justice is causing high debates about the treatment of capital crimes and the accused persons in general, the story was made into a movie later. Bachmeier itself was sentenced to several years in prison for manslaughter.
Jun. : From this month on, the Tuesday evenings are occupied by the TV series "Dallas".
Jun. 30: One of the last actions regarding the crimes of the 3rd Reich, the so-called "Majdanek-Prozess", will be closed in Duesseldorf. The main suspect, KZ-watchguard Hermine Ryan-Braunsteiner is sentenced to life-long custody, seven others received sentences of 3 - 12 years prison.
Aug. 4: A pre-milltary training becomes compulsory in all extended higher schools and special schools for boys from grade eleven in the GDR.
Aug. 26: The 200th Lockheed F-104G 'Starfighter' of the Luftwaffe crashes near Esbjerg/Denmark.
Sep. 1: Albert Speer, architect and armament minister of the 3rd Reich, dies at the age of 76.
Sep. 13: The fall season becomes more explosive...during the visit of US- Secretary of State Alexander Haig in Berlin (West), 50,000 people are demonstrating against his visit. During the demonstrations, clashes between the protesters and the police are becoming violent. On the 22nd of September, demonstrant Klaus-Jürgen Rattay dies after being run over by a car, the police had driven a group of demonstrants on a road with high traffic.
Oct. 6: Protected by thousands of policemen and border patrol members, the highly debated extension of the Runway West begun at the Frankfurt Airport.
Oct. 10: 300,000 people are demonstrating in Bonn (former capital of the FRG) against the installation of mid-range nuclear missiles in Europe. This is the largest demonstration for peace in Germany so far.
Nov. 15: After the illegal village consisting of block houses and tents located at the Runway West (Frankfurt Airport) was cleared, the former (also illegal) dwellers protested at the airport and shutting down all entrances to the grounds of it the next day.
Nov. 22-25: The leader of the CCCP, Leonid Brezhnev, is visiting the FRG for the third time, talking about disarmament and economical questions.
Dec. 11-13: German chancellor Helmut Schmidt is meeting the chairman of the GDR, Erich Honecker, during the third peak summit. In East Berlin, questions of disarmament, economy and environment were discussed.
