Hey Y'all,

I was wondering what everyone tended to watch primarily during the 80's? Did you watch sit-com's mainly, or drama's, perhaps variety shows or maybe cable movies were your mainstay.

I'd have to say that it was sit-com's and MTV video's for me during the 80's. I loved humor and music, and still do. I tend to watch more drama's lately, but the good situation comedies are a thing of the past. There are, however, a couple good comedies still around and classic 80's videos can still be viewed, courtesy of VH1 Classics! :thumb:

early '80s - kiddie shows, cartoons

mid '80s - cartoons, A-Team, Knight Rider

In 1987-88 I was watching five-six HOURS of WWF wrestling every weekend. Looking back, that was insane considering that good WWF matches were never put on TV at the time. Another show I just had to watch after school in the late '80s was Video Hits. With no cable this was the only way for me to see the music videos of the era. I watched the TGIF sitcoms when that started too.

I watched a mixture of sit coms and 1 hour drama's, detective shows. Also watched a ton of movies's on vcr and little music video's as we had no MTV and Much Music didn't begin until 1883-84 in Canada. Although I watched sitcoms and drama's, there were alot I didn't like and didn't watch. I think the 80's were big for me for watching movies, as VCR's were getting big in the early 80's and it gave me oppotunities to watch all the movies I'd never had a chance to watch:)

It was sitcoms, MTV, HBO, and anything 80's music that was on. There was always a constant argument between my sister and I after school. She wanted to watch Nickelodeon and I wanted to watch MTV. My mom finally had to make some time schedules for each of us so we could both watch what we wanted.

Cartoons, MTV, and wrestling were my primary viewing. I liked being out and about more than staying in the house then. And of course every night was for sitcoms

For me it was mainly action and detective shows. Knight Rider, BJ McKay and the Bear, A Team, Magnum PI, Simon & Simon, etc etc etc.

The only really annoying thing was that I missed a lot of them during the early 80s because they were always on the opposite channel of the boring English soaps my parents always had to watch!!! :yucky: :moon: :gene:

I watched a little bit of everything in the 80s. I watched all of the popular sitcoms of the day as well as all of the nightime soaps and quite a few of the drama series, such as St. Elsewhere, LA Law, etc. I also watched copious amounts of MTV in those days, as they played music videos at the time. And, of course, all the great stuff that was on Nickelodeon, including the classic comedies of Nick at Night...

Mostly sitcoms. Definitely The Cosby Show and a Different World. I had to see what outfit "Denise" was wearing so that I could try to do the same. I loved the way she looked and dressed.

I totally forgot about 120 minutes on MTV. That was definitely a most on Sunday nights. Just to see the up and coming new bands along with the ones that were already hot.

Yup, me too! I taped 120 Minutes every week between 1987 and 1993, and watched it on Monday afternoon after school. :D I only have a few episodes left on tape, but I still pull them out and watch them once in a while.

Looking back on it, I will say that I just watched way too much TV in the 80s. My thought process, paraphrased:

Cartoons? Yup, mostly cartoons... but what about kids shows on PBS? Yeah! 3-2-1 Contact... Electric Company... Game shows! Watching soap operas with my Auntie... Guiding Light... General Hospital... Solid Gold....

I remember spending a lot of time outside, and being forcibly ejected from the house on any day when it was remotely nice enough to play outdoors.... (warmer than 20 degrees or so & not raining or sleeting) but how did I ever find time with all that TV? Not to mention reading books or playing Barbies, which I know I did a lot of... phew!

It's kind of embarrassing now... I hope that when I have kids, I can raise them to still appreciate pop culture without becoming total couch potatoes ;) It's a very fine line, isn't it? Mom ought to know!

I watched a little bit of everything, from cartoons to sit-coms, to action shows to the soaps, plus shows like American Bandstand and Soul Train in between. I still watch quite a bit of '80s stuff now, like the Cosby Show, Three's Company, and the A-Team.

Lots of MTV. I liked karate movies too, they seemed to run a lot of those. And any scary movies, especially Movie Macabre with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. And I watched all the sit coms, but I don't think I really cared for any of them. Mostly I listened to music on the stereo.

In the later '80s, I never missed Headbanger's Ball - even though Rikki Rattman (sp?) was pretty hard to take, but I guess he wasn't 'till the '90s. When we got HBO and Showtime and TMC I just watched movies all the time.

When I was home, that is - which was pretty rare

I recall basing my life around the TV Guide scheduling..is that lame or what? Ok, so it was before I had a drivers license and didn't have a nearby mall to hang out on. (Yeah, stranded on a air force base)
Anyway, I remember tons of MTV, *sigh* back when they actually played ENTIRE music videos..world premieres and all. CLUB MTV, DIAL MTV, REMOTE CONTROL..(with a young Adam Sandler)
TV wise..FALL GUY, A-TEAM..(I pity the fool!)..FAMILY TIES, GROWING PAINS, CHEERS, COSBY SHOW..You know, I could probably go on forever with this, but I won't.

Mostly MTV and Sitcoms.
