Anyone remember this song? As I mentioned over in the sports forum, I saw Donnie singing the national anthem at the Pats-Steelers game yesterday. The funny thing is, I had only heard this song on the radio the previous weekend for the first time in who-knows-how-many years. If I hadn't heard the song, I wouldn't have made the connection. Weird, huh?

I remember the song. Actually, just like you, I've just recently heard it again and saw a performance on VH1 Classics, if I remember correctly. Great song!

Actually, Iris wasn't a one-hit wonder. Doesn't anyone else remember "Love is Like a Rock" or "My Girl"?

Is this the song that goes "Ah, Leah, here we go again, Ah, Leah, Is it ever gonna end"? I never knew who sang it, but I've always loved it! I remember the song 'Love Is Like A Rock'!! That one, I believe, has the chorus "Love can rock you, Never stop you, Ahhh-ahh-ahh-ahh, Love is like a rock". lol Thanx for reminding me. I'll be singing that in my head all night! lol

I was driving in my car a few months ago and that song came on the radio. I hadn't heard it in years (more like decades), and it is one awesome song. It drove me nuts because the stupid radio station kept fading in and out. I got home an immediately downloaded it from Kazaa.

Back in the '80s I heard it, and ingrained "Donnie Iris" into my memory so that I could buy the album. Never got around to doing that, yet I remembered his name, and wandered around for a couple decades wondering why I made such a point of memorizing it.

Well, I didn't wonder about it constantly or anything, it was just one of those weird things. When I finally heard Ah Leah again it all finally made sense.

A new greatest hits disc was released for him earlier in the year. It's part of MCA's "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" series. The band was based out of Pittsburgh, but Cleveland is like their second home.

Donnie started out as lead singer of The Jaggerz. Their song "The Rapper" hit #2 in 1970. He toured with Wild Cherry as a guitarist, then formed Donnie Iris & The Cruisers in the late 70's. Here's a rundown of some of his chart hits:

"The Rapper" - #2, 1970
"Ah! Leah!" - #29, 1980
"Sweet Merilee" - #80, 1981
"Love Is Like A Rock" - #37, 1981
"My Girl" - #25, 1982
"Tough World" - #57, 1982
"Do You Compute?" - #64, 1983
"Injured In The Game Of Love" - #95, 1985

If you grew up in Pittsburgh or Cleveland, you heard these songs on the radio every single day!

Marc Avsec, another member of The Cruisers, recorded 2 solo albums under the band name Cellarful Of Noise. Donnie was involved with the second album, and can be heard on the single "Samantha (What You Gonna Do?)" - #69, 1988. (Marc Avsec wrote the Bon Jovi hit "She Don't Know Me.")

Oh Surlyone, Where oh where is Agnes(outside of Ah Leah I think Its his best). I saw him twice in concert, the last time at graffitti's. Ah leah! was vote #1 sexiest song by Playboy back in the 80's. I wasnt sure if Donnie got any national recognition outside of the midwest.

"Agnes" never charted. There are two other songs that hit the Album Rock charts: "I Can't Hear You" (#47, 1981, only on the chart 1 week!) and "The High And The Mighty" (#39, 1982). Oh, and "Love Is Like A Rock" did better at Album Rock radio - it hit # 9 in 1981.

It's funny I found this. Last night my husband was singing "Love is Like a Rock" and we had to search to remember who did it. I'd forgotten Donnie's other songs too. Good stuff.

Glad someone mention"Do You Compute"Loved it!
This song really summed up the generation at the time!
And it even though it was released in 83' it could be the anthem for the end of the 80's decade!

COOL BREEZE

I was watching vh-1 and I saw a video from a live performance. The song they were singing was love is like a rock. It was great, lots of energy by the band, then when it ended it was donnie iris, I had no idea that was him. I have heard ah! leah! many times but not this one particular song maybe a few but not many, great song. I give it two thumbs up.

"I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissin' them....I never knew how badly I was missin' them..."

Now I ask you. How can anyone not love a song with a line like that in it??????? :D
