Roemello 4-26-00, 01:35 PM Break out the parachute pants and a nice sized piece of cardboard and get down! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Anyone else ever do this? It was definitely a major fad in my neighborhood in the 80's.

Gunner Girl 4-26-00, 06:54 PM I used to love to watch others do this but as far as myself, nope!
If I tried to do it, "Breakdancing" would be the word; break every bone in my body!
Love to all!

Sal Collaziano 4-26-00, 07:03 PM Breakdancing days were actually PRE-MUSIC days for me. I wasn't a big fan of any type of music. Although I did the moonwalk pretty well. haha http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/redface.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-26-00, 10:43 PM Yeah, Blaziegrl. That's a bug. I've alerted the UBB code programmers and they are taking a look into it. It seems to work about 80% of the time. I'm not sure what the cause it, but as soon as there is a fix, I'll have it...

Nikki_91 4-26-00, 11:35 PM Oh yeah, of course I remember breakdancing. I never tried it, but all the guys would get into a circle at the Junior High dances and go to it. Rememeber "The Wave" and "moonwalking"..and that one where you spin on your back..can't remember what that move was called..I think it was "The windmill"(?)..ok, I think I know way too much about breakdancing...
------------------
Sal Collaziano 4-27-00, 12:14 AM Yes, you do! haha http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/wink.gif

Sal Collaziano
Roemello 4-27-00, 02:16 AM I completely forget the names of the moves. I do remember that the "spinning on your back" thing was about the best move I had http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/tongue.gif Alls you'd ever seen in the parks down where I live were cardboard sheets all over the place http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 01:15 AM What ever happened to breakdancing anyway? Did it just get 'old' and fade out?
------------------
Sal Collaziano
Roemello 4-28-00, 02:06 AM yeah, I guess...I wish I could remember how it disappeared, but I really can't recall. Being that the case, I guess it did just fade out.

I used to love watching it! If I ever tried it now there would be an earthquake http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif (Fat joke there he he!) It's actually made a bit of a comeback. Run DMC featured it in their recent film clips. There are classes over here where you can learn to do it. I remember the Rocksteady Crew with 'Uprock'. Anyone else remember them?

*Sheree*
Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 10:21 AM It's making a comeback? Now you've got Roemello all excited. We wont see him for a few days. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/redface.gif hehe

Roemello 4-28-00, 02:18 PM yeah! lol...too bad I'm moving out of the ghetto May 19...I'd show these kids how it's done http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 05:48 PM Oh, where are you moving too? Same state or what? I guess wherever you go, you'll have to be the BreakDance instructor.. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sal Collaziano
Roemello 4-28-00, 06:20 PM Yeah, I'm sticking around Massachusetts. Just after 22 years, 9 months, and a bunch of days, hours, minutes, and seconds...I'm finally getting out of the ghetto and into a real house in a nice quiet neighborhood (well, it's quiet right now anyway http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif). So don't be surprised if I'm on a little hiatus around that time for a couple days.
Me? A breakdancing instructor? lol...yeah, I can see that now...and one and twist, and two and wave...COME ON, SPIN!!!...lol http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sal Collaziano 4-28-00, 09:36 PM hehe Well, I hope you enjoy the suburbs.. Is it the suburbs? Ahh.. That's where I live. Nice smooth suburbs. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smile.gif And yeah, right. It's not gonna be a quiet neighborhood for long! Pretty soon they'll be hearing your thumping kicker blasting:
rock, rock, planet rock... Don't stop! Uno, duet, drei, quatro...
(Hmm. It's been awhile since I've heard that actually. Do I have the wording right? heh)

Iluvthe80s 5-10-01, 08:56 PM Me? Breakdancing? That would be a joke! I could never even get the hang of moonwalking. It was very popular here though.
djdaffy1227 5-10-01, 10:02 PM I was never a breakdancer but I do have the K-Tel album called Breakdancing. It came with instructions! It has "Grandmaster Flash's adventures on the wheels of steel""pop goes my love" by Freeez "Tour De France" by 10 Speed and "Joystick" by Dazz Band on it. Great music!
Iluvthe80s 5-10-01, 10:09 PM I have a few K-Tel albums. I have Hot Tracks, Chart Action '83, Blast Off, and High Voltage (which was my first rock/top 40 album ever).
djdaffy1227 5-10-01, 10:41 PM I have "Blast off" too<img src="smile.gif" border="0"> Didn't that have "You should hear how she talks about you" by Melissa Manchester on it or was it the one with "Paperlate" by Genesis? Or both? I guess after a while all K-Tel albums sound the same.
Iluvthe80s 5-11-01, 12:16 AM Just looked at my record and it has both.
Speaking of break dancing....Does anybody remember the movie "Electric Boogaloo"? There was another one that I can't remember the name of, but both movies were about neighborhood kids wanting to become professional dancers, and in one, save a community center in their town from being torn down. Both movies had a lot of great break dancing in them.
Roemello 5-11-01, 03:43 AM Wasn't that 'Breakin' and 'Breakin 2'?
Maybe... Maybe I used to do it. Might have been known to do a "wave" or two in my time. Or maybe, the "Caterpillar"... Not that I would ever openly admit it now! <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">
Pebbles42 5-11-01, 12:50 PM I remember watching the boys in elementary school breakdancing on carboard in the hallways in front of the bathrooms...ah, memories!! <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

edcarden 5-11-01, 07:47 PM ok...hold on.... but believe it or not <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> I actually was a breakdance instructor for a summer back in the early eighties. There was a dance school that wanted to try offering the class (6 or so lessons) to see the response. While I didn't start off the instructing I picked it up after the guy originally doing it stopped after the 1st few classes.
I do remember the breakin movies (1 & 2). I actually have the soundtracks from both on vinyl.
Breakin Moves were:
Headspin (self explanatory)
Helicopter (3 people. Person 1 sat on person 2's shoulders and then #3 wrapped his arms around the lower legs of #1 as #1 leaned backwards and #2 would spin around)
Windmill (hard to describe but you probably remember what it was when you hear the name)
Crab Walk (you would balance yourself on your 2 hands with your elbows tucked in around your stomach and walk around on your hands with letting any other part of your body hit the floor)
Backspin (self explanator)
Footwork (this was the dancing side to side and back to forth before dropppin down to the floor to do something or as an in between. You also did this when on the floor with your hands behind you and your feet either mnoving around, twisting in the air)
poppin and or lockin (this was stuff done while standing like the King Tut, wave, etc)
Moonwalk (see Michael Jackson)
Caterpillar (you layed down on the floor and went either backwards or forwards in a motion similiar to the way a catepillar moves but faster although the slower you could do it the better it looked)
Suicide or backflip (a backflip in which you appeared to land flat on your back. I heard that the guy who played the character "Turbo" in the movie breaking tried this by running up and off a wall but landed on his head)
Robot (move in solid or jerky motions like a robot)
Now that I have probably told more than anyone wanted to know, I too have several of these K-Tel records somewhere. Once I really got into the rap scene I started getting the 12" records instead.

Amy Livin 5-11-01, 07:47 PM I remember when I was about 5, my cousin was a big Vanilla Ice fan (not to mention a look-alike) and he loved break dancing so he showed me a few moves. I used to be able to do that worm thing.
Silveradocruiser 5-11-01, 07:53 PM Ok, I tried mixing breakdance and my little sexy, wiggly, Tom Jones kinda dance...Almost hurt myself! <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

You're absolutely right, Roem!
I couldn't remember the movie titles exactly. The second one was "Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo" umm I think! ???
Roemello 5-12-01, 03:20 AM Yup, you got it Sarg <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
Tom Jones and breakdancing techniques...only Silverado would attempt such feats of wackiness http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies/icon36.gif

Roemello 5-12-01, 06:26 PM Yeah, but that's a good thing <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> A little insanity never hurt anyone....unless you mix Tom Jones and Breakdancing...lol
Silveradocruiser 5-14-01, 06:15 PM But it sure was fun! <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
outofplacechild 5-14-01, 11:17 PM I so desperately want to get my hands on copies of the "Breakin'" movies, but they're nigh to impossible to find. Mom-and-pop video stores are shuttering by the week. I've been banned from eBay. The asking price for copies of these movies is (minimum) 35 dollars on the Web. The videos were only issued in the MGM/UA (earlier MGM/CBS) Big Box style, and that was terminated by '86. I don't even know if the videos were issued into entertainment stores (you know, like Tower or Suncoast). All I have is a rapidly deteriorating copy that I recorded off of VH1 in 1998.
My God, I need these movies. These films are Holy Grails of the home entertainment world (along with Criterion Collection laserdiscs and DVDs, "Free To Be You And Me", "Song Of The South", the gay porn that John Holmes did that caused him to get AIDS, films on Beta, any videos with the original Touchstone or MGM/UA/CBS logos, and any Warner Big Box Videos. Those of you who frequent the mom-and-pop stores that have been there since the late 70s/early 80s will know what I'm talking about).
Sincerely,
John "outofplacechild" Kilduff
Well.. I did some searching and I found this article....
The question we get asked via e-mail most often is: "where can I get a copy of Breakin'?"
The simple answer is that you can only tape it off the TV or buy a used copy. Breakin' and its soundtrack have been out-of-print for years. This means that the video company and the record company no longer make any copies.
Just about your only hope is to check out auction sites like ebay or Amazon, both of which regularly have people offering copies of the movie or its soundtrack.
I found a site where people see their movies (not auction) and nobody has that one for sale... here's the breakin' website that I got this from... http://www.fast-rewind.com/break/
It's a pretty cool site..
I used to looove break dancing.. and i loved both of those movies!! I could only moonwalk, the wave, and the catepillar (or was it called the worm)? Anyway... I loved to watch people do it!
I'd sure like to get my hands on a copy of the movie as well... does anyone here have even a recorded copy? You'd get alot of buyers on this site!!
What a great fad breakdancing was. I tried it a few times and gave up pretty quickly.
I remember youths at school at lunch time doing the old breakdancing in the school hallways. It was the only time that ghetto blasters or radios were ever allowed at school. It was actually OK from the teachers point of view!
I loved the music, that's what I fondly remember the most. Sadly, we hear very little of it on the radio these days. :(
I lived in Hawaii at the peak of the breakdancin' craze. I knew a guy across the street who would practice everyday, mostly makin' mistakes, but he kept at it! I started to take an interest and a group of people were at his house and I walked over and watched and tried it out! 'Bout broke my sternum trying the centipede too soon! We liked to wet down our carports, they had a nice smooth surface, perfect for spins. We would have what we called, "Break-Off's" were we'd try to outdo everyone in the neighborhood. I really wasn't that good.
I hope they have some breakdancing on the 80's show. That would be great to see again.
I use to do it all the time. I loved it.. but now i am just to darn old, i am afraid I will break a bone or something.. :p
wavemaster 1-17-02, 09:43 AM Breakdancing was pretty cool...I have always admired the skills of the different performers and crews, not to forget the music itself.
I had also been a member of a Breakdance crew (donīt laugh! ), and we had won some 2nd and 3rd prizes in local contests. Yeah, I was completely dressed up in the Breakdancing style, and we had not only copied the moves but also tried to invent some new tricks (one was called the "Stuka Dive"...forgive us our stupidity here ;)). Never did the headspin, by the way.
In the late 90s, Breakdance celebrated a short comeback led by groups like Music Instructor, but after a few hits, it went back to the underground of the current Hip Hop scene.
Breakdancing is an art. I saw some strange dancing last night:rolleyes: If you don't know how to dance sit the heck down:lol: But it was good for a laugh.
Why did people stop breakdancing?
I remember somewhere alongs 4th thru 6th grade, the school actually organized a breakdance competition. Anyone could enter and they took time out during the day to have the whole school come and watch the competition. That is how popular breakdancing was, even the school administration was promoting it.

Maybe there was just too much of it. Every event I went to there seemed to be a breakdancing display. And no matter where you went, there was some idiot breakdancing. I know myself that after a while I got a little bored with watching it.
Somebody breakdancing in the school hallway again? Ho hum. Ok dude, get a life! And by the way, your breakdancing sucks!
IMO there was just too much of it and that's why it died a natural death. The novelty soon wore off.
wavemaster 1-18-02, 02:48 AM Recker, now that you are mentioning it...yes, Breakdance was the second fad which was exploited quickly by the industries in no time. Samplers, clothings, even plastic pads and head protectors (!). Here today, gone tomorrow. A major setback for Hip Hop and Rap music of the 80s.
We even had a TV show here, showing how to learn Breakdancing. Guess I would have laughing fits if I could see the episodes now. ;)
Westend Girl 1-25-02, 08:41 AM I never danced it myself, but I dated a boy who was pretty good. He was so handsome with his white gloves and oversized Adidas clothes. The music was really bad, but it was funny to watch them dance. I remember that the boys got their moves from the German Bravo magazine. It had new instructions for new moves every week. It was a funny sight to see them learn from a magazine.
My Brother was pretty good at it. He and his friend would practice all the time. I'd be the DJ for them LOL
I remember breakdancing - I used to try the backspinning - even at school :) - I loved that bit with the legs going around, I never could master that. I'd try it again in a nightclub on one of those retro 80s nights. I reckon I could cut it ok

I agree, I think you hit the nail on the head. There was just too much breakdancing. So by the late '80s, maybey around '87, it was over. When a fad is that popular and burns that fast, the quicker it just fades away.
Well I bring it back!!!
The next time I go to a redneck bar I am going to start breakdancing.
I am going to see how long it will take before these big belly, toothless guys get out and join me..
