View Full Version : Best Eighties Pet Shop Boys Song
this charming man 1-22-02, 07:27 AM I saw under the news and rumours forum that The Pet Shop boys are releasing an album with Johnny Marr.
But what was your favourite Pet Shop Boys song of the eighties?
80sTrivia 1-22-02, 08:37 AM My fave song from TPSB's was their interesting take on "Always On My Mind". That was a great song. After that, my second fave would be "What Have I Done to Deserve This", their duet with the late Dusty Springfield. That was a wonderful song as well!!! :)
Who's That Girl? The Ultimate Madonna Trivia Book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0595210147/qid=1011275246/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_10_3/103-1497262-3724640)
My Obsession 1-22-02, 08:46 AM I voted for "It's a Sin". I never seem to get sick of this song, no matter how much I play it...
"West End Girls" is probably their 2nd best of the '80s.
80s hair 1-22-02, 08:48 AM I cast my vote for "Suburbia"!! What a great song. A close second going to "West End Girls".:ego:
It's a Sin, by a mile!
It was such a huge slab of European Disco Drama, that the minute I heard it I knew it was going to be a BIG no 1.
Such dramatic lyrics too "Father Forgive me, I tried not to do it..etc etc" Wonderful stuff from Messrs Tennant & Lowe!! :D
Roemello 1-22-02, 09:22 AM Gotta go with It's a Sin. I liked pretty much all of 'em, but that's the one that sticks out in my mind
West End Girls here. It was new and different and it's still a great song. :)

The Johnny Marr bit is true. I heard he's on 8 tracks. I posted this under the new releases or rumors section a few months ago. I heard the new single already and I love it. I will be running to the record shops when the full-length comes out. I worship johnny marr!! :)
BTW - Rent is my personal favorite so I had to vote for that. But, generally speaking, I'd have to say that West End Girls would be the one that was most popular.
Great topic!
I voted for "West End Girls". This started my liking of the Pet Shop Boys and it is a tune I enjoy singing along with. This song just takes me back to a year that was full of surprises! :thumb:
Iluvthe80s 1-22-02, 07:23 PM I went with "Always On My Mind" because I always loved that version of it. "West End Girls" came in a close second.
LadyMysTrix 1-22-02, 07:27 PM I voted for "It's a Sin". "Opportunities" was a very close second.
Most of those songs to me, are pretty much impossible to rank. But I think "What have I done to deserve this" stands out just that little more than all the rest. The chorus to that song is just so cool! :thumb:
Hey LadyMysTrix. Aren't you supposed to be stalking me???? ;)

That's the post I read and what inspired this Xistenza. I myself went for It's A Sin, but it was very close to call with West End Girls.

Dancingdoll1986 1-23-02, 01:56 AM I went with "Left to my own devices".......I really liked the way that it sounded....I wish I could sing!!
I voted for West End Girls - just saw a Pet Shop Boy special on TOTP yesterday and it's just still my favourite out of all their songs.... :)
Caligula 1-23-02, 06:04 AM I'm not a big Pet Shop Boys fan, but I chose Always on my Mind , as I did like that song
I guess the reason why I chose 'It's a Sin' rather than 'West End Girls' was because I find some of PSB's songs rather miserablist and lyrically boring - 'West End Girls' certainly falls into that bracket - but agreed that it is a good song. :thumb:

Interesting you should say that Chopper, I believe that The Pet Shop Boys have often been criticized for their songs being melancholy. I think that these probably are fair criticisms.
angeleyes25 1-24-02, 05:01 PM I voted for Opportunities,West End Girls came a close second..
Westend Girl 1-25-02, 10:42 AM This one was easy for me. I voted for Westend Girls. I love all their songs. That was a very good poll even though my answer was easy.
wavemaster 1-25-02, 10:45 PM Itīs the third time Iīm looking into this thread...and I have finally decided to vote for "Heart".
Tough vote..."Rent" would be a very close second one. Heck, all 80s PSB stuff was great, maybe with the exception of "Domino Dancing" - I never got warm with this one.
Interesting...German critics often said that Neil Tennant couldnīt sing well, but for me, his voice fitted perfectly to the tunes. ;)
Roemello 1-26-02, 12:51 AM Domino Dancing probably sounded a bit off beat from their other tunes because with that one, they were trying to jump into a different music genre...my personal fave, Freestyle, which didn't work too well for them :p
It was an ok tune, but I wouldn't even label it Freestyle (even though that's what it was supposed to be) :p
Another of my faves outta them was their remake of 'Where the Streets Have No Name'....interesting spin on that classic
Tennant couldn't sing? I reckon he has a great voice.
I'm glad somebody voted for Heart. That was probably my second favourite.
"The Streets have no name: is the best version of that song I've heard IMO.
Wow, tough decision here and to be honest, I like them all! But, I did vote for "Surburbia" since it has some cool production to it (namely the dogs barking at the beginning of the song).
Robyn
I don't believe I've ever heard 'It's A Sin'. I went with 'What Have I Done To Deserve This' because it was just sort of funky and different and I liked it. 'Westend Girls' would be next.
Many good songs there, but I voted for "Opportunities" as my favorite.
djdaffy1227 2-02-02, 12:19 PM I voted for "What have I done to deserve this", not only is it the Pet Shop Boys but my favorite female artist of the original British invasion! Dusty Springfield!!! With a combination like that, I was bound to love the song!
I like a strong dose of cynicism with my music, and though I wasn't a huge fan of PSB, I did appreciate their bitter wryness. Choosing one favorite track, though, was a toughie. Several were in heavy rotation at the clubs I went to, so, of course, I associate them with fond, gold-tinged and rosy-colored memories of a completely misspent youth. Ah, those were the days, weren't they? ;)
Anyway, it was a very close race, for me, between "It's a Sin" and "Opportunities (...Money)". I went with the former.
TV Diva
I like PSB, but I prefer the first "new-romantic" songs better than the dance-music ones. My vote is, obviously, for "West end girls"; in my opinion it's the best song they do together with "Love comes quickly" -I said, that's just my opinion.
javajane 2-07-02, 03:35 PM Actually Pianaro is my favorite, but wasn't a choice...
West End Girls and Domino Dancing...tie for me...
~JJ
Mystery Woman 2-08-02, 08:31 AM I had to pick West End Girls; mostly because I have such great memories of it from a school dance once upon a time... And it is a cool song!
.
Belladonna 2-10-02, 11:42 PM I picked "Domino Dancing". I don't really know why I love it so much. It's just so cheesey! Actually, my fave PSB track to party to would have to be "Absolutely Fabulous" I'm a huge fan of Ab Fab & that track is the greatest drunken party track!
Sara Smile 2-11-02, 01:06 PM Always on my mind. The song totally rocks. It is impossible to sit still when I hear that song.
Therrall 2-16-02, 06:51 PM I voted for "West End Girl" it's my over all favorite song by The Pet Shop Boys:)
Silveradocruiser 2-16-02, 06:57 PM I'm not a big PSB fan, but I like "It's a sin",so I voted for it! "Always on my mind" is also a great song, but I like the original version better...

West End Girl is fast becoming my favourite too! (Nudge nudge wink wink say no more!) ;)
Roemello 2-18-02, 12:03 AM I can relate Recker....man oh man can I ever relate! :D
Had to go with Westend Girls. Love the original version but not quite so keen on the remix they did with the female backing vocals. Cut my favourite line out of the song too.
"All your stopping, stopping and starting
Who d'you think you are? Joe Stalin?"
:D

I'd have to disagree with you there Roem, I thought they kind of diluted it and softened it up.

I actually prefer this version to U2s.
Steve Savicki 4-08-02, 08:44 PM West End Girls
Just something about the slow, drawn out intro that leads into the rest of the song that just sends chills down my spine.
Perhaps the beginning is so slow and "minor chord" to me that it sounds depressing and thus reminds me of Kira. (http://80sxchange.com/forums/attachment.php?postid=102165)
'80s Aztec 4-11-02, 11:29 PM West End Girls was clearly one of the defining songs of the '80s but I like What Have I Done to Deserve This sver so slightly more.
ImSoooSure 4-16-02, 02:03 AM I just LOVE the way they did Always On My Mind. I love that song from a lot of people but they did a great job. I have their DVD. It's trippy but this song turned out GREAT on it!:D
Went for "it's a sin" - but with "West End Girls" on a close second
Prefab Sprouter 4-18-02, 10:30 AM Great Poll This Charming Man!
I have yet to discover a PSB song I dont like and they rank up there with Prefab Sprout as my favourite English Bands of the 80's.
I voted for "Left to my own Devices" who else could combine
"Che Guevara and Debussy to a Disco Beat"??????
Pure Class!!!!!

Sprouty, that's why I invited you to my island. You picked the same song I did and that's my favorite line. When are you going to put up a PreFab Sprout Poll? BTW isn't it Albuquerque?
Prefab Sprouter 4-18-02, 11:39 AM Good Call Greenway! I'll see about getting one done in the next day or so. Were Prefab Sprout big in the States??????
BTW, Thanks for the vote of confidence. You'll be in my crew as well cos you got STYLE!! Right I'm officially announcing myself and Greenway are reforming the STYLE COUNCIL!!!!:D
Greenway88 4-18-02, 02:49 PM Yeah, if you can put up with "My Ever Changing Moods".
Unfortunately, I don't think many of us in the states have heard of PreFab Sprout. It's a shame!
BlitzKid 4-19-02, 08:47 AM Suburbia! Loved it then, still love it now. My second choice would have been Rent.
I went with "West End Girls" though " What Have I Done to Deserve This" would be a close second.
sketcher 4-22-02, 01:10 PM I wasn't able to vote. I had some error. But I'd go for...um... it's hard to choose! I'd say "Always On My Mind" as I totally flipped over that song. I still do and I'm surprised that more people like it. I thought I was the only one who liked it.
As for "Where The streets Have No Name/I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (now that's gotta be their longest song title!), I prefer that to the originals. Two covers in one song. Same goes for their cover for "Go West". Better than the original IMO.
80sAlive.com 4-25-02, 02:35 PM "What Have I Done to Deserve This" - classic drinking tune (but then again, I guess they all are!)
NiceGuyzFinishLast 5-04-02, 06:46 PM Yeah........
Finally get to vote for "Domino Dancing"...... :D
bookmistres4ever 8-04-03, 03:18 AM Oh I had to go with "What have I done to deserve this?"
Love the collaberation with Dusty.
I had a friend that gave me a video with a bunch of PSB videos on it, I think I wore that tape out. I played it so much.
West End Girls probably would be my second choice.
Does anyone remember which video they had that had the vampire in it? Was it heart? I can't remember now, and I'm sure my video collection is gone now...
Patty
DJ Midas 8-12-03, 07:11 PM I went with "It's A Sin" with "Left To My Own Devices" coming in a close second...
I can't believe I missed this thread.....
"It's A Sin" is my favorite PSB song :)
Jefferson Starship 8-29-03, 04:20 PM It's a sin for me! I like this song a lot.

Yes, that one was Heart. :)
whistledog 10-23-04, 12:49 AM Suburbia :thumb:
That song is pretty much an ode to my neighbourhood
SouthernImage 10-23-04, 02:00 PM Its a Sin
Xcess-N-Htown 10-23-04, 05:57 PM Left To My Own Devices and Opportunities are 2 great songs.
frothy latte 10-11-05, 05:20 PM It's A Sin
I like them all but Always On My Mind still gives me goosebumps!
Monty007Ū 10-28-05, 09:36 AM Rent , An All Time Fave Of Mine :-)
an80snut 11-01-05, 06:26 PM My favorite didn't make the list. "Love Comes Quickly" is a brilliant song which harnesses some great vocal work by Neil, a driving beat and etheral keyboard textures by Chris. But, since it wasn't there, I went with "Left To My Own Devices."
SeaBass 11-02-05, 02:39 PM i vote for the epic Left To My Own Devices, thier collaboration with the legendary Trevor Horn. Although I love their underrated ballad Being Boring.
othacon 11-02-05, 09:16 PM I choose "always on my mind" just because... I think what they want to mean with this song its sweet, weird, I don't know quite well but it's great!!!
Bananana 11-06-05, 07:03 AM I really like all of them, but I choose Suburbia followed by West end Girls :)
80's fanatic 3-12-06, 02:39 AM 'West End girls' :)
Glenn Gulia 3-12-06, 11:21 PM West End Girls
80s Queen 3-13-06, 11:06 AM Always on my mind. No one did that song better. It's the only version that counts.
dcantujr 3-13-06, 02:08 PM Heart (12 inch Dance Mix)
Livinginthe80's 1-12-07, 12:13 AM Wow what a really hard choice. "Discography" would be one of my favourite best of compilations. There isn't a song on it that i don't like. I voted for "Suburbia", i could listen to this great song over and over and never get tired of it.
ensignparis 1-12-07, 11:31 AM Tie between What Have I Done and Always on My Mind.. 2 awesome PSB songs of any era! Always..got my vote. :)
NenaZauber 8-23-09, 02:48 PM Please is the best album! It's the most funky and electro so that's why I likes it the best. :vibes:
