View Full Version : Ex-Goths (and current Goths?)

I've read a lot of posts lately about ex-Goths, and current Goths... stand up and be counted!

I started wearing mostly black in eighth grade, because I thought it looked good on me... that was also the year I discovered the Smiths. My best friend and I spent a significant portion of 1988-1992 lying around her room listening to Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Nosferatu, & company. We weren't really old enough to go clubbing, but we dressed up for it, and scared our parents. (actually, neither of our parents were all that alarmed, they thought it was funny)

I still love the music, but I don't wear the clothes anymore... it's really kind of sad, I have a very formal job and I don't even own more than one pair of jeans at a time, let alone the huge collection of goth-wear I had in high school. Today, for example, I'm wearing a turquoise silk suit from Ann Taylor, and pearl-pink nail polish, which would have made my 15- or 16-year-old self gag.

What are your goth memories? This is the style forum, so what did you wear, and what did you do to your hair? I dyed mine various Manic Panic colors, but that was as far as I would go.

My little sister is gothic. Wears all black and stuff. She likes Sisters Of Mercy, the Nefilium (I think that is how you spell it?), London After Midnight, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. She has been into that style since she was 14 and she is now 23.

I consider myself a semi-goth. Most of the time I wear black clothes and make-up, but it's just too hot during the summer I listen to stuff like Cradle of Filth but mostly to 80's heavy metal

It seems so long ago now. I can remember my bangs being over my chin. I can remember my blood red shirts being the only thing in my wardrobe that wasn't black.

Still try to keep a similar wardrobe these days only the suits are a little more expensive than the 2nd hand store stuff we used to wear then. I too have a pretty formal job (and I'm getting kinda old) so the clothes don't scream goth anymore. But the colour choice will always be black.

I saw the Sisters a couple of years ago and was amazed at how many younger folks were at the show. I was impressed. However, I don't think they were as impressed that the old fogies were hanging around.

that's funny because I remember my short, white hair, and mostly black and red items in the closet. We'd also wear the plaid boxers with knee-high black tights and I had black buckle-shoes. I never labled myself, and I had different kinds of friends. But inside, I always felt closer to the goth people. And I would have loved to see Sisters, Siouxsie, Or Bauhaus. I saw Peter Murphy play with Tom Waits open. That was one of the best.
I love Joy Division. "Love will tear us apart." he was pretty cool.

I'm afraid I'm a typical guy. My only advice is "throw it out and buy another one".

that's all we're good for now...our laundry advice...
the coldest water, extremely mild detergent (hell, try organic stuff if it exists)
and/or soaking the shirts in the sink with black clothes dye..

You know that's not true Vilji. Where would we be without our friends?

Avoid using detergents with bleaching agents - a lot of detergents will have those. And when you rinse - use vinegar in the first rinse cycle....it binds the colour...

Slobber slobber, drool slobber. Admittedly I didn't develop my huge crush on Tom Waits until well into the 90s (when The Black Rider came out) but I would have loved to see that!

I started out as a total geek (mother influenced wardrobe). Then my Junior year in high school two big things happened. One I discovered punk and two I was an exchange student in Germany (where I was introduced further down the dark path). I came back a new person with a new wardrobe. Black and leather became the norm. The hair got high then disappeared then came back as a mohawk with bangs past my chin (which I recently relived then braided and cut off...and it currently resides in a sarcophagus.) and changed colors many many times. The music got heavier and darker...having friends in art school helped tremendously. My makeup has toned down a great deal...went from too much white/blk to none.

I stuck with the whole thing (music, clothes, hair and home decorations...coffin still in the living room) and don't see myself changing much in the future either. Still love the music...old and new....my favorites are Siouxsie and the Banshees, Switchblade Symphony, Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death (old stuff), Bauhaus, etc. etc....

So there you have some ramblings of an old goth.

I've always been a Punk, now my style is kinda a hi-bred between punk and goth(Around here we're known as Horror-punks)Very influenced by the Misfits,The Damned,45Grave(I guess they call it Death Rock now)but no matter what the look is called,I'm a Punk.
I have dated several Goth chicks though, very fun girls(they weren't the typical depressed goths)yes, very fun indeed!(Not as crazy as the Metal chicks I've dated)but fun none the less.

I'm what you'd call an Eldergoth I guess... I discovered goth way back at it's inception, and have remained gothic in my tastes and outlook ever since... Fashion-wise, I still wear New Romantic style dresses and plenty of "gothic casuals" (lace and velvet tops with vinyl skirts, black stockings, Doc Martens, etc.) on my own time... Back in the eighties I had bottle blonde hair, with streaks of maroon and plum... it was usually spiked, and had enough hairspray to make it bulletproof... It's toned down now, and back to it's natural red but it still gets spiked when the mood takes me...

I still go clubbing on Saturday nights too... much to my kids embarassment...

Goth music, as long as itīs not played hyperslow...I think this contradicts the feelings and atmosphere to something ridiculous in my eyes (and ears).

One Friday night, a friend of mine really styled me up the Gothic way (including hair dying, this process took over 3 hours! ).
And then, we took the the subway to get into the city...boy, we were a sight! In the disco, we moved as little as possible to prevent sweating which would have caused our face painting to run...and the next day, my face was covered with tiny little spots as the skin reacted allergic to the cosmetics.
You can be sure I never tried this again...

Today, the fashions nearly gone (havenīt seen a Gothic for years, really), but I still like the music.

I've been getting told a lot lately I look goth. lol Must be the black hair. Changed my hair color a week ago. I like the gothic image, but was never a big fan of the music. Just not my style.

I guess it's about time I confess. I was a total gothchick when I was a teenager and into my early 20s (i'm 26 now). I would wear NOTHING but black, had long black hair, cute betty page bangs, fun extensions & braids, purple streaks, red highlights, you name it, if it was gothy, i did it. I never went too crazy crazy with the make-up, no black lipstick or designs on my face. Just black eyeliner and darkred lipstick was enough for me. Never wore a cape or anything like that....those kinds of things are a bit over-the-top for me. But, I do have my fair share of corsets...(god, i haven't gotten into one of those in YEARS!)

As for the music, there are a few "goth" bands I liked, and still like (Bauhaus, Joy Division, Siouxsie, Christian Death w/Rozz, Virgn Prunes, um...and a few others). I also liked and still like A LOT of industrial music. Anything from Frontline Assembly/Skinny Puppy era to Covenant and Apoptygma Berzerk. And as you probably all know by now....I'm a total newwave/synthpop fanatic.

I guess my taste in music is kind of all over the place, now that I think about it. I've been a fan of british pop bands since forever....and I even like some old school punk. Rah rah! Oi! Oi! :D ;)

I still wear a lot of black. I like it. It's simple, yet dramatic and minimal. I've just done away with the black hair and settled in with a short red bob.

I still go to goth/industrial ebm/electro/newwave clubs fairly often. Mostly because I have a lots of friends there and it's free since my friends are djs. The clubs have become more of place to have a few drinks then a BIG night out. I never make a big deal out of going anymore.

Okay...I think I've babbled on enough here. So, I'll finish with a silly goth joke.

Q: How many goths does it take to change a lightbulb?

.
.
.
.

A: None. They like to sit in the dark.

*lol* okay...that sucked. :D :) ;)

That's so cute Xis. My favourite goth joke was always (and sorry if I offend anyone with this):

Q: What is the No. 1 goth pick-up line?
A: "You remind me of my dead ex-girlfriend."

Sorry.

I haven't been in a club for a long time (other than for concerts). Getting too old now for that loud new-fangled music.LOL I like to spend most of my social time in pubs. Conversation and booze is great. :)

Ooops. Going off-topic now.

Oh Bogie...as long as you donīt dig īem out from the cemetary... :D

Like I said, I am more into the music...was never too fond of all that doing up with clothes and the paintings.

I just wish you all could have seen the goths at the MīEra Luna...they were truly a unique sight, from dark Mistresses of Doom to one very fragile looking woman in a wedding (!) dress. I just wondered about some ladies which wore nothing much more than tangas, a garter belt and stockings underneath the belt line...the wind was blowing sharp and cold that weekend. :D

ROFL @ Wave & Bogie! (& Xis, don't knock the lightbulb joke, it gave me a chuckle)

Xis, your description of your "goth closet" sounds so much like my best friend's from high school. I remember laughing hysterically when she brought home her first corset from a shopping trip in Boston-- I was her scruffy flannel-and-Chucks sidekick, and wouldn't even wear a bra at the time. LOL, hush, boys. The funny thing is that I was far more "goth" in my mind than she was-- I was definitely gloomier and more cynical.

We certainly didn't tell anyone when we spent entire weekends watching Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer...

i wore lots of black and Bauhaus and Peter Murphy was the ultimate to me for a time.
but with my white hair, I just couldn't consider myself goth. My best friend wore bondage clothes to highschool. While i was pretty much covered up.

Mary C, I can see where you're coming from.

I recently cleaned out my "goth closet". I realized I still have a ton of clothes that I haven't worn in years. Sold a bunch of stuff on e-bay and made some pretty good cash. :D BUT, there are certain things I'll never part with...I put them all in my goth box & tucked it away for a nice rainy day when I feel like walking down memory lane.

I ran into an old friend this weekend, and he said he also did the same thing....sold all his old goth stuff on e-bay. Boy, these new young goths got it pretty easy these days don't they? All they need to do is go online and bid on all the goth attire they could ever dream of. ;)

alright everyone.. this is my story and im sticking to it :D

i reluctantly came to the decision of 'gothliness' when i discovered there just wasnt anything else out there for me.. it was just who i was...

i would call myself an eldergoth, without the first hand experiance to back it up, trapped in a 17-yr-old highschooler's body :cry2: i like the oldschool stuff, the bauhaus and the banshees and whatnot.. and if i had my way i'd wear a black-w/white-polka-dot shirt and a derby hat everyday.. but its awfully hard to find that stuff nowadays (and i havent the $$$ for ebay ;) ) and its especially hard to find plain black pants that *ARENT* flares (oh jeez, dont even get me started) i mean tapered pants arent *that* retro, are they? :uhoh:

anyway i was born and raised by two punks but now my mom likes marilyn manson! (which was really embarassing for a long time, i dont care anymore) fortunately, she also likes a lot of industrial stuff.

i never talked when i was little and i would wear weird clothes (for a kid).. now, living in texas completely sucks.. summer is not a goth's friend! :cry2: (not to mention the lack of clubs)
but i still hold true to the hair... i have a blonde/white 'gothawk' (the really thick mohawks, skinnypuppy style) and i wear little black siouxsie-dresses (thank god for thrift stores!) and little black newwave jackets (like the one mr. gore is wearing in DM's question of lust video) and i LOVE lots of eyeliner and the red lipstick..
but i guess i havent had to deal with 'growing up'/'getting older' yet.. i may tone down a bit but i will still love all of it! ;)

but the difficulty is, im just now coming to terms with the fact that i will always like that stuff and i missed the boat... i was just born 20 years too late.. :yucky:

and now that i have bored everyone with my life story.. i shall take my leave...
TO THE BATCAVE! :D

I was never really a gothie at all, but I did go through a dark "vampiric" period during '89 or '90 and wore mostly black and listened to the Cure and Siouxsie, but didn't consider myself goth, I was, however fascinated with the vampiric culture and sleek looks! :)

Most of the eighties I was considered a Mod/Punk (Goth in todays terms) Black hair, black clothes, White face makeup and my good old doc martens...
Then I got old, plus its hard to find a job lookin like that :(
