I always thought it was a little goofy to count your posts. I know there is a few people who make very intellegent posts, and only have a few hundred to thier credit. I have been here well over a year, and I only have in the 700s, yet I moderate a few boards, and I think most people know my name. I had not even been in the MEMBERS LOUNGE in about 2 or 3 months. I mainly hang out in my forums, and only post where I have something intellegent to say. SO, to me, running up your post totals with silly posts is a bit much.

Dang Jasper, I never bothered to look at your totals but I'm surprised. I see your name everywhere on this board. I think the counter is broken.:p If I had to guess your total posts I would have definately guessed way more than I have.
...Oh and sorry for all my goofy posts. It's not for the milestones though it's just cause I'm a goofball. :goofy:

Goofball posts are all good...at least they have some substance to 'em ;) I think the one's we're referring to here are the ones that are really really small and pointless or are 'count mining' posts (except the ones in the joke forum...not much you can do there but laugh or give a witty remark  or the Mad Libs are obviously ok :) ). Taken in moderation it's not too bad, but overdone just gets :eek::lol:

It's all a question of balance. There should be room for all sorts of different fun here. I think it's cool that so many people welcome new members. Even if it's just a short welcome. Having 30-40 people saying hello is really a warm welcome. It would be so easy to run up thousands of posts in the member's and love lounge plus the comedy forum. That would not really be true to the love for the 80's though. This is a great place to talk about the 80's AND do so much else. Again, it's all a question of balance. :)

Roemello
1-12-02, 03:43 AM
That's pretty much what I was trying to get at...forgot about the welcome wagon..that's all good too :D The majority of active members are doing just fine....really isn't a big deal. But then there are just times I'll come across a bunch of unnecessary quickies that just brings a cringe :vibrator::lol:

In conclusion....what Flix said

Closing Note: I split this off the '400th post' thread to showcase the thoughts given...good idea Flix!

The only time I get annoyed is when two people carry on a conversation in a thread like it's the chat room. A few posts back and forth is cool, but when we get to two and three pages of back and forth with little to say, then it gets grating. Especially when it's completely off what the topic of the thread is...

I don't like it when a person flaunts their upcoming trip to Florida and I'm freezing my ass off. j/k:D

actually I don't really care how many posts people have, I'm always surprised when I see how quickly people reach milestones and I've been here almost a year and am nowhere's near others , but unless your giving out prizes for posts, I don't really care, I probably would post more if I had more to say or had more of an interest in a specific category. bur eventhough I grew up in the 80's, I wasn't interested in certain things then and i'm not now, so I'd have nothing to say about it anyway. Carrying on a conversation can be annoying, but I just ignore that thread. I know thats an easy habit to get into, I have to catch myself and send PM's

thats my 2 cents worth. :)

As for using threads as a chat room, I think it's just a waste of space! People doing that, should be punished!:hammer:

I'm probably guilty of everthing listed here. First off, let's forget about trite and obtuse comment regarding the number of posts. I find the original post rather condescending to anyone who just writes a blurb about a topic or just recalls a fond memory. Isn't that what were basically doing, recalling memories from the 80's? Is the worth of a post decided in it's length? We're talking about our interests here not addressing the U.N. I was quite unaware that posts were going to be scrutinized for their "intellectual" content. Flix said it best "This IS a great place to talk about the 80's AND do so much else", and I wholeheartedly agree.

There is no malice intended, just expressing my concerns. :)

99% of my posts are short ones, I'm not intelligent enough to write long ones

If I wrote long ones then everyone would find out I'm really a moron

Uhm... Is that an original piece of work, Jasper?

Unless your goal is just to make it into the Top 10, then post count really is irrelevant. It's the substance that matters. I have seen a few polls and threads here that make me cringe. But! If I don't want to read them, then I just don't!

BTW. Nice to see my Superhero making his annual re-emergence.

As Flix said, the key is balance. Trixter, yes, sometimes it is only necessary for a one liner to express a thought...I do that from time to time myself, no problem there. But the posts that just say something like 'i agree' 'i don't agree' 'no' 'yes', have three words to 'em or just have a smilie there with no message at all are kinda pointless...along with what Pagan mentioned above with the excessive chitty chatty are the kind in question.

Not me for one....I only post when I've got something constructive to say!

I don't really care about my own post totals. I mean, it's fun to reach a certain milestone in posts and I don't see anything wrong with bringing it to other people's attentions. As far as it being a race to have the most total posts, there's really no point in trying to catch up with some of the true Postaholics here, who shall remain nameless!!! ;)

I post ALOT but, I usaully have at least a little somthing to say. I don't know as much as everyone else about 80's trivia and fashion and stuff but, I do post in forums like that so I can learn more about the 80's, through being corrected and such.

As for one on one chatting in the forums, I'm twice guilty of that. :D Somtimes I just can't help it, and then regret it after. LOL Too bad I can't delete my own posts.

I don't care how many posts I have,I just enjoy posting them! :)

We're all here to have fun and make friends and recall some fond memories from our favorite decade. The only monitoring of posts that goes on (including editing or moving a thread) are the ones that turn into a flame war. Since that doesn't happen very often (almost never), we mostly just participate in the various conversations. That's a testament to the great people we have here!!
BTW, the only award given out for the amount of posts goes to the first redhead to reach 1500!! :D :ego:

Oh God. I just typed a whole long three paragraph message here and accidentally deleted it all. Oh my God..

Well. We've got to keep in mind that this is a very friendly and social place. Many times in the real world, you'll simply nod your head or say, "yeah" when speaking with someone. When someone posts a very small message, this is the equivelant of just that.. In my opinion, anyway.

Some people do post simply to get their post count up. I know. But, it's all in fun. A high post count doesn't make you better than someone with a low post count. It just shows that a person is here often and reads lots of messages..

This forum does have the capability to disable post counts in chosen forums. However, I don't feel that action is necessary at this point in time...

Exactly, sometimes you just want to express a short thought. We are all here to have fun and enjoy ourselves. I don't come here to run up my posts. I have a high post count because I enjoy being an active member of the xchange. I love contributing and I love being a part of any topic that I can relate to.:)

When I post.....sometimes I just have something small to say. It's not that I don't always have little to say, but I just like saying that I remember something. I also have my 'puter on all day, and I am usually on line and constantly checking the boards...so I sometimes do go back and forth...just because I am on so much. If I do tend to get out of control, I'll just look up the person and see if they are online on my IM and go from there. If not...well, then I just wait till later.

I like coming here....and I love all the topic, the people, just everything. Sometimes I have nothing more to add than a smile. I am not trying to "up my posts"....it just seems to happen without even trying. (Though Aron tell me he's gonna "re-introduce" himself to me 'cuz I'm on here so much!!)

I'm just me, and that's all I am able to be. I hope that I don't offend anyone, because that has never been my intention, nor do I want anyone to have any hard feelings toward me. I am just a "fluff chick".....sometimes I am just not too deep!

Jazzmyn
1-13-02, 02:38 PM
Think you answered that pretty well DD. :) I get the same way at times. I haven't been posting as much lately cause I've been kind of stressed out. I tend to make short responses when I'm like that. Sometimes I pop on here and don't post at all. I don't worry about my post count anymore. I'll admit that I did at one point, but I got over that. lol Now I just try to contribute when I can.

If you really don't care about your post total, could you chuck a few my way lol.

I don't ever seeing me getting to 1000 posts.

If I do a short post, it's generally because I want to make a contribution to the thread which either supports the topic or doesn't. I try and think of something constructive and interesting to say, but once that reply screen comes up my mind goes blank lol.

Trixter, I know that Jasper may not have worded his comment in the most endearing fashion (trust me, I went off on him a time or two ;)), but I'm sure he wasn't trying to condescend to anyone. I have have met him, and now I know that the way his posts sometimes come across is not necessarily how he meant them to. Had I not met him, I'd be right with you! :)

Some people do post just for post count sake, and it can be annoying. There is no prize for being in the top ten, that's why I don't do posting marathons. But for some people, this is some kind of status symbol. So what? Skip their posts.

I totally agree with Pagan on the conversation-type posts. I would say, "I'm sorry if you don't agree", but that would be a lie, because I don't care if no one agrees. Everyone does this on occasion, and five or six posts aren't too bad. But a full page or two is simply a chat that needs to go to the chat room.

Something I forgot, but thought was important enough for it's own post: Signiture Lines!!!

People, we do not need to know everyone you chatted with once or who said something nice. Lord, if some of these things get any longer, I swear I'm going to pm these people and go berserk! I know it's supposed to be another fun aspect of the board, but really! Pick the most important ones and eliminate the rest. If your sig line is longer than most of your posts, you might be a redneck. J/K...but only about the redneck thing, the rest I'm dead serious about. I get sick of having to go through a whole page when there's only five posts on it because a person's sig is so long.

Jazzmyn
1-14-02, 01:34 AM
Actually, I kind of agree with Val on the sigs. I know mine isn't the shortest, but it's not too bad either. lol Some do seem to be getting a little carried away though.

Maybe people could pick their fave parts of their sigs and stick with those. Just keep it a little shorter. :) Not trying to start any arguments here with this. Just a suggestion. :)

The signature lines does not change the number of posts on each page. You said it yourself about the posting numbers - if you don't like it, then skip it. I respect your opinion, but I just don't understand the contradictions. People should skip what annoys them, but same rule doens't apply if it annoys you?

Regarding the sigs - I do believe it's possible to disable signatures under "user cp" - so anybody who's annoyed by long signatures might consider that option :)

I believe that most of us have shown moderation in writing our signature lines. Granted, there are a few that have gotten a tad too long, but my tab down button moves pretty quickly on to the next post, so it doesn't bother me all that much!!! :)

Truth to tell, Flix, I do skip most of the sigs. Why? Because I read a lot of threads I don't post to (much like Sarg stated), and I think I've read enough. Of course the same rules apply to me, that's why I skip them. What makes it annoying, to me, anyway, is the sig is a book when the post conveys nothing.

I just took this opportunity to rant about that because everyone else says what annoys them. If you have a long sig and it makes you happy, by all means keep it. But rest assured I am not the only one who doesn't read it, probably just the only one who will admit it. ;)

TJ!! I'm happy you like Valerie Bertinelli, but fact is, I quit looking at her and waiting for that to load after the first week here. :p LOL Sorry. ;) But I read your posts, because they are great, and that's what counts, yes?

I don't mind long sigs, I love reading them if they change alot. I just dont like the same thing everyday, it gets kinda repetitive reading the sig everyday. lol :p

As far as my signature line goes.. it's about the same length as most anyone else's. I agree for a week there.. my sig line was longer (one line).. because I was stalking 5 other people as a sort of joke. Hardly anything to get worked up over. Basically, I included anyone who included me.

As far as post counts go. I don't keep up with mine. Chris (Zacros) recently informed me that I had made it to 600 and I was shocked!! Wow, that's pretty cool.. but I don't post mindless things just to up my counts. I've only started a few threads that I can recall.. all fairly thought-provoking.. but I hate threads that are started just to tell a specific person something and aren't necessarily there to generate conversation. There have been a few of those in the member's lounge in the past. Why not just send them a PM if you have to tell them something??.. especially considering the fact that we get those pop-ups now to notify us of PM's. Trust me.. they will get your message :D :D

Zacros
1-14-02, 11:26 PM
Well, to begin with, I agree with most things people are saying here. I mean, I sometimes post short messages, or even just a smile, but c'mon people, why is that so bad?
I though the idea here was to have fun and enjoy ourselves, not to write essays on why i should or shouldn't do this or that.
For example, if in real life I told someone about the problems in my life, and all they did during the entire conversation was stare at me without giving me any signals that they were listening, i'd feel pretty pissed off.

As for post counts... who cares!. I post when i want to, and what i want to, i don't care if i have only 5 more to go until i reach 1000. I wont post mindless things just to up it. In fact, I didn't even realise that it was there until a few weeks ago.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but it's kind of like TV censorship. I personally believe that the choice should be up to the viewer, not some moron who thinks that muttering the word sex, should be banned from all movies, no matter what rating it is.

Sometimes sigs get annoying, but even in my short time here, i've learnt to just skip to the relevant (ie, the actual post) parts. Some are a little long, but i'm not gonna complain to the owner, i'll just skip it. Of course, I do read them everynow and then, just to see what's changed in the world of stalking :) hehe I hope my sig is short enough...

I agree with the chat type posts though. They should be done over PM. I think i was guilty of a 'chat' once, but I try to keep the conversation on the correct topic.

If anyone has any problems with the posts that i make, just PM me and i'll stop doing them...

Just imagine what the board would be like, if everyone only posted long answers and no 'chatty/flirty' type responses... If that ever became the case, I'd be outta here quicker than a..well..something that's very fast! Even in this thread people have posted so-called 'chat' posts that are not directly related to the current topic. I enjoy reading these, as it makes the boards more warm and inviting. I'd hate it to become cold and clinical.

Well, there you go, a long on-topic post. Does that meet everyone's approval...?

-Chris aka Zacros

PS - NO offense is meant to ANYONE, and i hope I haven't upset anyone, but I just get real uptight over some things. If u don't like me anymore, then NYA NYA NYA NYA NYA!!! *sticks tongue out* ;) just kidding :)

Oh buc my friend, I too was so happy to find your post after reading all of this! LMFAO! That is the kind of fun I'm talking about baby! Damn, funny, just damn funny. Thanks, man.

I'm new here really, just joined back in Nov., so new, active yes, but really new too. When I first joined, I did get the impression the post count was something to be proud of based on how it was discussed on the board as topics by themselves. So I thought to myself, I'm a Texan and we do things big, so I went to work on getting a big post count. I'm sure that those posts when looked at individually, some were not quality (by who's definition though?), but if taken as a whole, they help give me a personality on the board. Some people's personality is made up of only a few posts others are made up of 1000's. All told, I gave up on the post count thing at 1000. Roem check my activity, I think you can confirm this. The bottom line, I read much more now and post less, but that doesn't mean that the posts I make will be a thesis or a one liner. Who knows? Posts are part of what makes us who we are on this board so post so I can know you better people! :D

Ok, now sigs... as a new person, based on seeing the sigs, I got the impression that sigs were another vital part of interacting in this community. I still think this too. A sig line tells about a person and their fun here and who they have it with. A sig tells about the person themselves. I do like to see how they change, mine did for quite awhile and then I went to my favorite all time movie line and left it at that. Personal choice. Isn't that what it is all about? If your sig annoys me, then you reached out to me in some way that I needed to be reached. Good for you, now change it! :D

I have been online since 1986, had my own BBS or two or three, was a member of many. Been there for IRC, e-mail, mIRC, ICQ, AOL, MSN, IM, PM, etc. etc. I've seen the worst of the worst and the best of the best, and this place my friends is better than the best of the best. This place is what the "internet community" conceptualization was supposed to turn out to be like. This is it! It's the bomb, the Ark, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the Holy Grail, etc. This my friends, is pure joy. I love knowing that after being out on one of my crazy Texas weekends or after a grueling day at the office, I can come here and laugh, learn and debate. Well enough... maybe we should talk about people who write too much in there posts! :D

I mentioned no names. If you take anything I said personally...well....tough noogies. :p Why is it that I state an opinion and vent, and that's all I get to hear about? If you didn't like what I said, ignore it. I don't want to hear about it every two minutes.

I could go on and on with all the B.S. I got last night (yeah, I'm obsessed  ), but that's all I'm saying on this subject.

Huh? ValJ, I SO did not think that you were out to make anyone upset! I know that we all have the little things that irk us, and I took it as just that. I want you to know that, because I know that, looking at my post, that it sounds like I was slamming what you were saying, when in actuality, I was just doing harmless teasing. No slamming was EVER intended.

I hope that there are no hard feelings there. My intentions are NEVER to hurt or slam anyone.

No, Gretchen, I didn't take anything you said as a personal attack. :) I just figured we were taking this opportunity to get a few little things out of our systems, so I did. If I had known it would get this kind of attention, or that people would act like I was the only one who thought this, I wouldn't have said a word. ;)

It just so happens that I got the brunt of it in chat, and though I tried to drop it, someone else kept bringing it up.

We all need to vent once in awhile. The worst thing I vent about is the fact that Aron and his "man habits" make me crazy!! If the stuff here bothers me, I skip it. I mean, if I don't like something on TV, I change the channel. If I don't like something on the radio, I turn the channel. (Or pop in my CD's.) I may not be the smartest, or the most eloquent person here, but I like being here. And I also like it when people vent. It means that they feel comfortable enough to do so. If no one likes it, tough. I take nothing too personally around here...except being singled out. (:goofy: )

Don't hesitate to vent, it's not that big of a deal. That's what is so great about it here, after all!

:D

Yeah, I can be a long-winded bag of hot air. I'm in a program though, but results do vary! :D

That you have G, that you have ;) So have I for that matter....around summer last year I think I was averaging at least 30-40/day  Now I too do a lot more reading than posting as well...not to mention forum maintenance and such given my relatively new position :)

It is great to see that we can vent and still be friends.
What family doesn't vent?
We are all adults here (some might act childish:p) and we proved it.
It takes a real adult to take someones opinion and learn from it instead of getting upset about it.
