View Full Version : John Lennon got shot
I know this has been done also. Again, it was an event that was big enough to warrant resurrection.
I was just getting into music when this happened. I had just got home from school when a news bulletin broke in saying that he had been shot and killed. I was stunned. I had recently bought 'Imagine' by Lennon and Yoko Ono, I pretty much wore it out after that. Its just so sad that the Beattles never came back together because some sicko wanted to get Jodi Foster's attention. Even if they had never got back together again, it would have been their choice!
I was living in Yokohama, Japan at the time of John Lennon's death and learned about it on AAFES (?) broadcasting, the 2 hours a night we got American programming.
Caligula 1-07-02, 05:25 AM I thought I remembered waking up in the morning to go to school and it being announced on the radio, remember that was before CNN and tv being 24 hours long, so the radio was the only way of hearing at 6 am in the morning.
I don't remember exactly where I was when I first heard it, but I remember 7th grade English class the next day. Our teacher was so broken up about it that she could hardly talk. She just sat at her desk all day and cried while we had to write an essay on whether we agreed or disagreed with the concepts in the song "Imagine".
:( I was 6 years old and in kindergarten the day John Lennon was shot...it didn't have much of an impact until I started getting heavily into music...now it just saddens me...
If my memory serves me right I believe I was in my bedroom listening to the radio and talking on the phone when the DJ announced that John Lennon had been shot and killed. I remember thinking about what kind of moron would want to kill John Lennon?
Johnny Nyk 1-13-02, 10:08 PM I was in 3rd Grade.
Our teacher, came into the room and she was crying. Since I sat in the first row, and the second seat, I could hear her remark that John Lennon was shot. I kind of knew who he was at that time. I remember that the next day all the radio stations in Miami were playing "Yesterday" non-stop.
That 80z Girl 2-24-02, 02:15 AM I remember seeing the news on the TV that night. I was only 11, so I don't have extremely vivid memories of it.
I was in college, working on a paper with the radio on and the deejay cut into the song he was playing to announce that Lennon had been shot, then several minutes later that he was dead. There was a candlelight vigil that night on campus.
I was a senior in high school, and I heard about it on the radio while doing my homework. That was so strange! It happened right before my birthday too.
CinderGirl 3-13-02, 06:11 PM I was 7 yrs old, living with my grandparents and I remember standing in the living room when the news broke out on the tv. I think it was around 9:30 in the evening, and as soon as they said, "This just in -- John Lennon has just been shot." I froze when I heard those words.
Cybermoukette 3-17-02, 04:05 PM :D I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was just 18. We had just arrived in the country for a month or so. My father, who worked as a journalist for Agence France Presse had been sent for his work to South America.
:( It's my father who first told me on the phone that John Lennon had been shot. He knew that I was a great fan of the Beatles as I grew up listening to their songs. The Beatles actually represent a part of my childhood.
Though John Lennon was not my favorite, it shocked me of course to learn that he had been murdered :cry2:
Superfreak 3-17-02, 05:09 PM I was a Junior in high school and I wasn't even that big a Beatles or John Lennon fan. I liked their music, but it was just slightly before my time. I remember getting ready for school. I had the radio on and that's all they were talking about. For some reason, I went totally numb. All I could think about was Yoko and Sean. I didn't....I couldn't go to school. I spent the rest of the day watching all the news stories.
Professor 3-20-02, 03:03 PM "It's just so sad the Beatles never came back together because some sicko wanted to get Jodie Foster's attention."--Red
Actually, Red, you may be confusing Mark David Chapman with John Hinckley, Jr., President Reagan's assassin. Hinckley was the guy with the Jodie Foster fixation, but that's neither here nor there.
A lot of people in my age group were watching Monday Night Football, and got their first word of it from Howard Cosell:ego:. Me, I wasn't watching MNF. Instead, I was watching my late local news when, at the tail end of the newscast, the anchor read a breaking story that John had been shot. Well, I went to bed and turned on my table radio. Within thirty minutes, they announced that John Lennon was dead, and started playing Beatles music all night, including a lot of John's solo stuff. The next day at work, I told my co-workers that John Lennon had been shot to death. Well, since I was, far and away, the youngest employee there (all my co-workers were from the World War II generation), and the lone baby boomer, they didn't quite get it. One even asked, "Was he at a party?" "Were drugs involved?"
I had to explain to them all that it was a deranged fan who'd shot John. I couldn't bring myself to listen to any Beatles' music for nearly a year after that.

You actually knew who Lennon was in the early '80s at the age of 7? I'm just a little younger then you, I was 4 in '81, and I don't remember this incident at all. Not only that, I didn't know who Lennon was until maybey the late '80s. When I found out the details of who he was, along with the Beattles, the whole incident made me sad.
'80s Aztec 3-25-02, 01:37 AM I was 15. My brother and I were watching "Monday Night Football" when Frank Gifford (I think) made the dreadful announcement. We yelled for our mom to come watch. We stayed up all night watching news.
Denise85 4-02-02, 09:45 AM I was at the skating rink - the "DJ" made the announcement. My first reaction was "Who is John Lennon?"
At the time, I didn't know band names or memebers...all I knew were songs. So, when the DJ played one of his songs, I realized who he was.
Can you tell I grew up in a small town?
80sTrivia 4-04-02, 10:57 PM I remember that my older sister told me that John Lennon had been murdered. I knew who he was, but I was too young to be affected by his death at the time. I remember that I had to walk through the high school campus of the Catholic school I attended to get to my class. Many of the older students were crying as were some of the teachers.
I was at boarding school. The news came to me like a total shock. The Autumn Term was just on the verge of finishing, and I was about to celebrate my 15th birthday (3 days later).
BlueMolly2001 12-08-02, 12:00 AM Today marks the 22 anniversary of that tragic day when former Beatle, John Lennon was brutally killed. I was wondering where people were when they first heard the news of his death?
I was only eight years old, and I didn't hear about it until the next day. My mom and I were in Boston, MA, because my eye specialist is there, and we noticed a lot of upset people. We went to the Quincy Market, and saw one of the radio stations there and my mom asked the DJ what happened. He told her that John Lennon was killed.
Even though I was only eight years old, I knew who John Lennon was, and both my Mom and I got upset. The scary thing was that the previous night I had a horrible dream about someone getting shot, and I woke up crying. Who would have thought that my dream would have come true?
80'sNostalgic 12-08-02, 01:01 AM I was 10 years old.
I remember that my 5th grade teacher was in tears the next day. She explained how much John Lennon meant to her, and America.

here's an earlier thread about Jon Lennon's death
Bon Jovi 3-17-03, 03:57 AM I Was 3yrs old Watching TV With my Folks I dont remember what we were watching though but Then They Broke In With The News Of John Lennon's Death.
I Ran into my room and Turned the radio on cuzz my folks fliped the channels, they didnt wanna hear the news about it but I did.
LadyDi4476 3-17-03, 09:07 PM I was only 4 years old at the time so I don't remember but I wish I did. I later became a Beatles fanatic and I really would have loved to have been able to go light a candle in Central Park when he died. I try to visit Strawberry Fields when I can to honor his memory :)
Cold Ethyl 3-17-03, 11:36 PM It's weird, because I think I was 4 when it happened and I didn't even know his name yet, but I remember. We were listening to the radio, I didn't really pay attention to what was being said but understood that someone had died, and I remember that my mom was very upset, and showed me a picture of John on one of her Beatles records to show me who they were talking about.

That's what I remember... hearing the news while watching the Miami Dolphins/Oakland Raiders football game (http://onthebox.netfirms.com/Articles/Mayhem/Mayhem.html) on December 8:
...in 1980 the three (Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, Frank Gifford) were announcing a Monday game when Cosell got a call from the producer of the show, right after the Raiders scored a touchdown. Cosell somberly put down the receiver and took a deep breath. "Tonight, on the street outside his apartment in Manhattan, John Lennon, the ex-Beatle, was shot twice in the back and rushed to Roosevelt hospital - dead on arrival," Cosell... said.
After taking off for five years, in 1980, Lennon had released the Double Fantasy (http://www.discographynet.com/lennon/jldf.html) album.
I had just begun getting into his music (beginning with that album) and remember thinking how sad it was that he had been shot so soon after 'starting over' again. :(
Slayergrrl 3-18-03, 02:02 PM I was 6. I don't really remember much. My older cousins were crying and someone made the statement that "Music will never be the same"
LOSTNTHE80S 3-18-03, 05:04 PM I was listening to the radio when they interrupted and said that they had received unconfirmed reports that he had been shot. They followed up about 15 minutes later stating that the it had been confirmed and that he was dead. I still have my Double Fantasy album. (It was bought BEFORE the shooting)
ankletheeledgirlie 6-01-03, 01:13 AM I was in my Dad's old van he was taking us to see Christmas lights that evening. I remember hearing about it from the radio. Imagine came on in tribute. I sat staring out the window crying as the song played.
smurfette 7-22-03, 10:56 AM I remember it very well. My ex and I had just woken up and he put on the radio as he always did in the morning. They were playing back to back Beatle records which was very unusual.
I said something like 'sounds like one of them has just died or something' and was very shocked when this was confirmed by the announcer :( It seemed to me like such a senseless waste....as it was.
One of my earliest memories of music, is of the Beatles. My Mum was a big fan.
I was 10 when this happened and remember I was playing in the basement when my mother came down to do some laundry and she was crying and telling me John Lennon had just been shot. It was so sad, because my family were huge Beatles/Lennon fans and they were very upset about it.
I was ice skating. They had a local radio station on the loudspeaker- the DJ announced that John lennon had been shot. My friends and I,who grew up listening to our older brother and sister's Beatle albums, stood there with our mouths hanging open in disbelief.
It saddens me to this day
severina 1-28-04, 04:49 PM I was on the 3rd floor in the hallway of a nasty tenement house waiting for my.. um.. delivery service...anyway, I heard this thru the wall of a neighbor who had the radio cranked up. Very sad day.
Darrianne 2-01-04, 07:31 PM Listening to the local radio station. Then my sister called me and asked if I had heard, minutes later.
Bon Jovi 3-15-04, 02:02 AM I Was 2yrs old Watching TV With my Folks I dont remember what we were watching though but Then They Broke In With The News Of John Lennon's Death.
I Ran into my room and Turned the radio on cuzz my folks fliped the channels, they didnt wanna hear the news about it but I did.
Correction: I Was 2yrs Old Not 3yrs old
ILovethe80s 6-19-04, 05:36 AM Bon Jovi: wow you remember that from when you were 2? and remembering actually *wanting* to hear about someone dying when you're 2, is just kinda macabre to me, sorry. I was about 4 and i have no recollection of it at all...weird

Nikki_91 8-23-04, 10:00 PM I was in the 1st grade..I was watching tv and it came on the news. I just remember they showed vigils outside his apt. and they were playing "Woman" in the background. Seriously sad...
KimJoy69 8-24-04, 12:45 PM It was my birthday :bigcry: and my mom & dad brought me breakfast in bed, but they were in tears. They told me what had happened late the night before. We are a Beatles family, so it was a really suck ass day.
galaga-girl 8-25-04, 06:28 PM I was being born
Kid Sidekick 8-25-04, 10:26 PM I was six and at a friends house about to eat pizza. There was a small black and white tv in the corner of the kitchen near the table and the report came on.
I was at the age where I knew who John Lennon was, I knew who Paul McCartney was, I knew who Ringo Starr was; (Didn't know George yet) and I knew who "The Beatles" were. But I had NO idea they were all connected.
Rigormortis 4-12-05, 04:51 AM I was coming home from work and was less than a mile from home at the end of a freeway off ramp when they broke in with the news. I wound up sitting through a green light because I was so stunned. Years later I was in the exact same spot when they came on and said that Jerry Garcia had died. Talk about the unpleasant side of deja vu!
Tanya1976 4-12-05, 11:10 AM I just turned four the day before and I was in preschool. Jesse Owens also died that day.
