View Full Version : Favorite Stephen King Book Of The 80's Flix 1-05-02, 11:50 PM Stephen King's name seems to pop up a lot around here. What is your favorite Stephen King book of the 80's? Trixter 1-06-02, 09:59 AM I voted for "Misery". That book conveys a dark and twisted message of vulnerability, dependence and obsession. King really grabbed me with this one!! :thumb: Recker 1-06-02, 04:37 PM I've read a few King books, but It is the only one I've read from that list and it's one of the best books I've ever read. Totally outstanding. Great characterisation and fantastically interwoven plot. Really has you rivoted. Impossible to put down. xistenza 1-06-02, 06:01 PM I voted for Pet Cemetery. I also like his collection of short stories. I think it was called "Skeleton Key". Very good. Iluvthe80s 1-06-02, 06:39 PM Was "Dolores Claiborne" written in the 80's or the 90's? I really liked that book. Flix 1-06-02, 11:43 PM It was Skeleton Crew, Xis. And Dolores Clairborne was from the 90's and indeed a very good book, Stacy :) Roemello 1-07-02, 03:18 AM Pet Semetary's the only one I've read out of those, so that's what I gotta go with! :p I think I wanna grab a copy of 'IT' though....the movie was cool, so the book must be great! Bogie 1-07-02, 08:11 AM The Stand was my favourite King book. Buggered if I can remember when it was written but I read it in the 80s (that much I can remember lol). So I voted for IT. Thought that was a pretty neat book. VioletFoxx 1-07-02, 09:07 AM I had to go with Pet Semetary. I like King's books, but am a much bigger fan of his short stories, like the Skeleton Crew collection which Xis mentioned. I'm not sure why I like the short stories better to tell the truth. They just seem to creep me out a whole heck of a lot more. Maybe it's because he tends to go into too much detail at times in the books, and that's harder to accomplish in a short. My favorite story is still The Mist. *involuntary shudder* Flix 1-07-02, 05:01 PM I went with Pet Sematary. It freaked me out and it is one of the few King books I read again later on. xistenza 1-07-02, 07:01 PM Originally posted by Flix It was Skeleton Crew, Xis. Thank you, Baby! :) :D ValJ 1-08-02, 12:26 AM IT!!!! I read IT in four days (almost 800 pages) and I was terrified!! The movie totally sucked, though, and was nothing like the book! jen* 1-09-02, 12:01 AM I have read every one of these books and The Talisman gets my vote. It and Pet Semetary scared the beJesus out of me. The Tommyknockers just made me not buy things that required batteries and a trip to the dentist was out of the question. The storyline was good though.:D ValJ 1-10-02, 09:40 PM Originally posted by Roemello Pet Semetary's the only one I've read out of those, so that's what I gotta go with! :p I think I wanna grab a copy of 'IT' though....the movie was cool, so the book must be great! WHAT?!?!? Are you serious? How did I miss this? LOL That was a horrid movie! Johnboy Walton, for crying out fricking loud!!!! The actors all sucked in this movie! Are you sure you saw IT? If you thought that movie was cool **shivers in disbelief**, then you need to read the book PRONTO!! Reck is right, you can't put it down. But it freaks you out, just the same! I think Stephen King should have sued for that one. Flix 1-11-02, 03:41 AM I noticed that none of you has mentioned Eyes Of The Dragon. A book he wrote for his daugther, since she couldn't very well read his horror stuff. It's a really really good book. He understood to hide the horror stuff so well that children won't pick up on it, but it's still a creepy book. It really shows his abilities and skills as a writer. :) 80sTrivia 1-11-02, 07:53 AM I voted for Misery . For me, it really captured what it is like to be a tortured author! It made me glad that I didn't have a muse like Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates in the movie) hounding me to finish my latest book!!! Who's That Girl? The Ultimate Madonna Trivia Book (http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail.asp?isbn=0%2D595%2D21014%2D7) dammitjanet 1-24-02, 04:56 PM My favorite SK book wasn't on the list - "Thinner". I did a book report on it in 11th grade, and totally grossed out my teacher! If you haven't read or heard about it, it's about a man who gets cursed by a gypsy after accidentally hitting her with his car while his wife was giving him a BJ. Not exactly 'family time', but it was good! :D 80sTrivia 1-25-02, 07:19 AM I remember the book Thinner as well, Janet. I believe Stephen King published this book originally under his Richard Bachman psuedonym. It was made into a really bad movie, unfortunately! Who's That Girl? The movie was dreck, but the book really freaked me out. The part that really got me was when Gage was hit by the truck, but the father is dreaming that he saved him in the nick of time. I do not like cemetaries....and plan on being cremated. Maybe. Westend Girl 1-25-02, 12:18 PM I only read two of the books on the list. I voted for Pet Semetary. It was really scary and I had a hard time putting it down. I never watched the movie, so I would not know if it was as good as the book. Mary 1-25-02, 01:43 PM I voted for Christine, but I should've voted for Misery, now that I think about it. I grew up in Maine, and saw some of the filming for Pet Sematary. We saw them shoot the scene where the woman & kid are being chased by monsters through a pretty green meadow. My grandparents are friends with the people who owned the land most of the outside scenes were filmed on, but we didn't get to meet any of the stars. Phooey! This is 80s special effects for you... the "monster" was actually a guy from the crew, running around with a big spool of orange tape, so that the effects people would know where to put the monster in later! ROFLMAO! IT scares me way too much, partly because it's set in Bangor and I can exactly picture where almost everything takes place. (especially the water tower! yipes!) I couldn't even finish the book. I am not that into horror in general. ;) jen* 1-25-02, 05:05 PM There are few books that I have to put down for some reason or another. Pet Sematary was one because it scared the crap out of me. I finally finished it, but I have never reread it. The other was Danielle Steele's No Greater Love . The beginning of that book takes place on the Titanic and the first few chapters just depressed me so much I had to keep putting the book down. Plus, I was reading it at work and I certainly didn't want people to see me squalling! ZodiacMindwarp 1-26-02, 01:00 PM Eye's of the Dragon is an outstanding book, even though it's not as well known as the others(probibly because it wasn't made into a movie)but it's definatly my favorite. |
