I'm shocked that someone let this go without answering. The The is to Matt Johnson as Nine Inch Nails is to Trent Reznor, they are bands with one member. Oddly enough Johnson recently signed with Reznor's Nothing label (coincidence?)

Johnson released two solo albums before forming The The as a band but keeps the name and uses it for his solo work. The The released 6 albums from 1983's Soul Mining to NakedSelf this year. Several musicians contributed on different albums including ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, former ABC drummer David Palmer, Marc Almond, Neneh Cherry and Sinead O'Connor. The music started as synth dance, moved to darker yet warmer feel, released an album of Hank Williams cover tunes and now they keyboards have moved to texturing with a more human feel.

Their biggest hits: "Infected," "Uncertain Smile," "That Was The Day," "The Beat(en) Generation," "Dogs Of Lust" and "Love Is Stronger Than Death."
