I just finished watching the first installment of the 80s documentary, and, I must say, it was quite good! Once again, however, they decided to take a swipe against the "commercial rock" artists of the early 80s, such as Journey and Styx, but, all in all, I found it quite entertaining. Any other opinions?

I thought it was well put together too. What I liked was I didn't find any negativity against the eighties in it. Loved seeing the interviews with the 80's artists like John Taylor and Billy Idol.

Night #1 of VH1's 80s Week just concluded. I feel very sad right now because it squeezed alot of awesome 80s footage and 80s video into a 60 minunte timeslot, and I'm sad because now it's over. The program & the 80s! Tonight's eppie was about the "Video Age". Could have done without Shannen Doherty hosting it though. Shoulda got someone 80s! I ran out tonight & bought a brand video tape so I could record it...for me & down the road, my kids!

Some highlights:

-Lots of footage of Duran Duran
-August 1981, The dawn of MTV
-Transistion of arena rock to new wave/video rock
-ALL the great 80s video clips (too many to name)
-The virtual absence of African-American artists UNTIL Prince & Michael Jackson...almost 2 years after MTV was launched
-Women in video segment: Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Go-Go's, Annie Lennox...also shown (briefly): Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks, Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons)
-Did you know Christopher Cross won for best song in 1980?!
-The initial resistance of established artists (The Boss, Journey, Elton John, etc.) to do music videos

Tomorrow is Episode #2: The Heavy Metal Years.

LONG LIVE THE 80S!

I recorded it too and will record all the other nights (except for the rap/hip hop one). Never was a rap fan.

I agree with Suzyn... why the heck did they choose Shannon Doherty to host the show??? I think they could have chosen someone more associated with the 80s... Beverly Hills 90210 was a 90s thing!!!

Don't throw anything at me, but I always kinda liked Shannen Doherty.

I was grading papers last night so missed the first installment. I'll have to catch it in a rerun. Sounds about right. :p

It was good, except for the interview clip with that 80s samplejacker Sean "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" Combs. Why the fluck would they put that unoriginal 80s-hacking weasel in there for even a minute? He sounds like a flucking doofus...why couldn't we get another interview clip with Pat Benatar, Boy George or John Taylor? (All artists he's ripped off, by the way. Goddamn I hate that shit-spore Combs so!)

Sincerely,

John "outofplacechild" Kilduff

I enjoyed last night's Metal episode. I don't get the Shannon Dougherty thing either, but I enjoyed the music history. It was neat to see the transitions throughout the decade.

I was going to go to bed after that because I was dead tired, but then they aired "Pink Floyd: Behind The Wall" and I couldn't leave. I've always loved Pink Floyd. That was an interesting show...much more sedate than the usual BTM shows.

Caught the new wave episode last night. Not bad, but I think it could have been A LOT better, with more photos, video clips, etc. Also, I wish they'd show more interviews...I'm getting really tired of seeing Billy Idol's opinion.

I also saw the Culture Club Behind the Scenes. That was very entertaining. Boy George is such a softy...glad he still has a sense of humor about himself. :) ;)
