View Full Version : THE Official Charts of the 80s
Sal Collaziano 7-25-01, 02:28 AM Okay everyone. Forget about the Billboard charts or the Neilsen ratings. We're big enough to come up with our own rating system. Who better than us?!
No one
So. Where do we begin? 1980? Let's build this thread with ideas and ways to accomplish this. I think the world will regard our list as the true top 100 songs and television shows year by year - by 80s fans who really care and know what they're talking about. Not some group of 'who caresies' at a ratings corporation.
Okay. I'll begin with a little Pink Floyd and "Another Brick in the Wall".
wavemaster 7-25-01, 11:16 AM Welcome to your lifetime occupation, Sal...
Good idea! Letīs see how deep the members will dig in their memories for the most obscure tracks...
The best solution might be an own databank in which the members can directly enter artist, track and date. Unfortunately, I donīt know how to set up such databanks...but Iīm sure we will have at least one geek here whoīs willing to try...
And to keep it on...some tracks from my personal hit list, but in no order of preference:
DEPECHE MODE Just Canīt Get Enough
CAMOUFLAGE The Great Commandment
FRONT 242 Masterhit Part I&II
DAF Der Mussolini
SISTERS OF MERCY This Corrosion
M/A/R/R/S Pump Up The Volume
ITALO BOOT MIX Vol.7
SKINNY PUPPY Assimilate
KRAFTWERK Music Non Stop
THE CURE A Forest
The other 990 tracks will follow...
Whoa wave...leave it to you to come up with a list of songs that most of which I have NO idea who the hell you're talking about!!!

I think I would feel the same when I would read a list with your faves...
djdaffy1227 7-25-01, 08:11 PM I don't know about this. Being a big fan of the charts I'd say instead of making a "official" top 100 how about we just list, say, our own personal top 10's instead. We'll leave the "official" title out of it. There is already an official top 100.
Blaziegirl 7-25-01, 10:46 PM That's Sal for ya always thinking big Dj, the top 10 list sounds good to. I'll have to give some thought to anything I put here so I'll do that tomorrow when I don't have a headache
How about if everyone lists 5 songs? We then we vote to keep 1 of the 5 songs from each person to stay. Then we vote down to a final song from everyones 1 song? Do this for each year. Sorta like The List from v-h1.
Or we could pick one song listed on the Billboard top 10 for each year in the 80's?

I like those ideas, TC. Each member lists 5 to 10 songs (maybe one song for each year), and come up with the "80xchange.com Top 100" as chosen by its members. KEWL!!!
Sal Collaziano 7-26-01, 09:21 AM A little side note. The whole reason for starting our own Top 100 is that it would be ours. I'm trying to move toward having our own original content. What do you think?
My concern about choosing songs from lists already compiled (like Billboard) is that many of us do not like any top 10 music.
If the charts contain songs that you like, it's a real handy reference. But some of us are in a different situation.
I say, let's make our own Sal. I'd love to see songs from Pagan's collection and Wavemaster's collection end up on the same list. I think our list could be a lot more representative of the music that was available and popular in the 80s.
djdaffy1227 7-26-01, 12:36 PM I'm still not big on the idea due to the fact 90% of the people here are metal and glam rock fans and 9.5% are new wave fans. (I'm in that .5% that likes it all.) Although important to the decade they are but a small part of what made the 80's the best decade for music ever!
I'd say you're absolutely 99.5% right Deej.lol. Variety is essential. And we had lots of it in the 80s.
Any list we come up with wouldn't mean anything more than "this is what the folks on the 80s Xchange liked". You are right about the "Official" tag.
But it could be buckets of fun getting there no matter which route we take.
Here's an idea:
We start August 1st with 1980. September 1st will be 1981 and so forth. We all submit a top 10 for that year and when the month ends we compile a Top 50-100 from the submitted charts. If someone submits a song as #1 then that song gets 10 points. #2 gets 9 and so forth down to #10 which gets..tadaaa...1 point. In 10 months, when we're done with the 80's, we can make a 80sxchange top 100 based on points from all 10 years.
I will be more than happy to do the statistical work on the points and make a spreadsheet.
I know that most people here are rockfans, so there will be alot of rock on the charts. But if that is the voice of the community, then we have the perfect 80sxchange chart! If this works we could do the same for movies when we're done with music or we could do both at once.
Just an idea to add structure to the suggestion.

Sal Collaziano 7-26-01, 03:50 PM I think we can have our own 'official' lists. It can be the official 80s fan list. No? Also, we can have seperate categories. I don't know how well it would work to have everything mixed. Maybe it would be better to have the lists seperated by type...
Sal,
That's why I suggested a way where everybody could submit their own personal charts.
I think the idea is a little lost, if you divide it by style.

I really like the idea of breaking it down into categories, that way we could have a top 50 or top 100 for each specific category.
I don't know how we would come up with all the names for the lists because all the members will have their favorite category. Some like hard rock or pop while others may like heavy metal, rap, wavers or any number of music styles, and not be familiar with another category's artists.
I suppose everyone can vote in their favorite category, that way, when they vote, it's for groups that they are more familiar with the artists.
