View Full Version : Minor computer problem
OK...Lets see if I can describe this so it makes sense.
First, I have been getting an error message that reads, Rundll32 has caused an error in NEWDOTNET3_23.DLL.
I called Tech support for my internet provider. They told me I may need to do a 'system restore' I did this!
I restored to an earlier date. I still have all my files except when I try to get into Yahoo chat, it won't download the chat? I can get everything else on Yahoo. It shows up but I do not see any chatters, the chat box is blank? Like it is still downloading the chat room??
I have the same problem in Roem's chat room?
Could this be a Java problem??
I can undo this, but than i get that error message again!
Anyone have any ideas??
Iluvthe80s 11-23-01, 11:58 PM This sounds like a job for wave. Where is he?
Roemello 11-24-01, 03:17 AM I'm not even sure what the heck could be causing that...must be some kinda java problem if it can't handle applets correctly....
WAVE!! Your kitty needs you! lol ;)
wavemaster 11-24-01, 07:36 AM ah...seems that my help is required.
Send the ticket with UPS or FedEx - this way, I can be there at your house in no time. :p
Okay...I´m trying.
First...I´m trying to explain this as good as possible. Shakey will surely add his knowledge, as he´s more fluent in the English language (and probably knows way much more about comps than me *LOL*).
Also, .dll errors are something very serious. It means that the OS (in your case Win ME) have some troubles with a program which uses the NEWDOTNET3_23.DLL . Unfortunately, Windows is rarely describing exactly what went wrong, it only say that it´s pooped. Even worse, fumbling in the .dll-datas may cause an irreparable system failure, so you have to be very careful.
So...if in doubt, keep your fingers away!!!
At least, you can take a look which program is using this .dll.
Select START > Search > Data and Folder from the taskbar of Windows. In the searching mask, enter the complete name of the data. Start the search. If the first search found nothing, try it with *.dll . This can take a moment, and you will get a lot of results. If the searched data is among them, do a rightclick on it and select 'Properties'. Now you may can find out to which program this file belongs and where it is located.
If it´s not linked to another program like Internet Explorer, you may can delete it from the System Properties > Software. If it is linked to the IE, you may try a little trick:
Upgrade your IE, for example if you´re using IE 5.0 you can upgrade to 5.5 or 6.0. Search in the mall for computer mags which contains a CD-ROM with this browser or download it from the Microsoft site (NB: this will take some time - better do it overnight when the net traffic is low).
If nothing helps, you may have to install the whole OS new. Sad but true...sometimes, it´s possible to install only the corrupted file, but with .dll-files, I wouldn´t take the risk.
If even this fails...make it first-class, please. And, I want a big V8-beast from the car rental, I have never driven such a vehicle before. :D

I did the search. I typed in NEW DOT NET3_23.DLL and right clicked on it. It said, 'Application Extension' and that it was created October 9,2001 ?? Obviouslly, this was not installed in my computer when I first got it. It seems to be something new? Could it be Microsoft Works, which I downloaded from a CD a friend had??
I am counting out my change now wave! You want that car to rent, you got it babe! :p LOL
Thanks for helping me! ;) http://www.wearenow.com/smilies/puckerup.gif
It's SPYWARE! Spyware, I tell you...
What kind of software have you been installing, you bad kitty?
Before we get started - Thanks for the vote of confidence, Wave! Nothing like having another techie giving you the thumbs up. :)
Okay, Kitty. Follow these instructions closely.
1. Click on Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
5. Select the New.net Application.
6. Click on the Add/Remove button.
7. Once the program has uninstalled, click on the OK button.
After completing all of these steps, please reboot the computer. This will have removed the New.net application from your system.
The above steps will fully remove the New.net plug-in. However, the Windows operating system will retain a record that the New.net plug-in previously had been installed on your computer in "C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files." This file is harmless, but can be removed by following the steps below:
1. Click on Tools.
2. Click on Internet Options.
3. Under the General tab, click on the Settings button.
4. Within the Settings window, click on the View Objects button.
5. Within the Downloaded Program Files window, locate and delete Tldctl2c Class.
6. Close the Downloaded Program Files window.
7. Click on the OK button within the Settings window.
8. Click on the OK button within the Internet Options window.
9. Close Internet Explorer.
Just in case that doesn't work, you can try to manually uninstall. The directions are available here - Click me. (http://new.chat.new.net/viewtopic.php?topic=673&forum=8&4)
Let me know if this works okay for you. Then we'll discuss a suitable method pf payment.
wavemaster 11-24-01, 08:32 AM Hey Shakey...are you ruining my chances to get a free tour to the US?
I´ll take it all back...Shakey does know nothing, he´s also computer illaterate etc. *LOL* j/k
You are right...now that you´ve mentioned it, yes, it could be some Spyware.
Nonetheless, I want to issue a little warning - after you´ve removed it, the program which had featured the Spyware might not run anymore.
Haven´t figured it out because I´m generally killing such stuff immediately... :D
LMAO!! You two crack me up! ;) http://www.wearenow.com/smilies/puckerup.gif for you both!
I'm not sure what Spyware is?? Could it be Bear Share? Either way, it's gone!
Don't worry wave, I got another computer that neeps repaired! This one purrs! ;)
Name your price, Shakey! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/naughty.gif

OK, I did this but when I clicked to remove it, it froze up? Nothing happened?

Shakey, I went to this site and printed out the 'how to' It worked great, except, when i restarted my computer, I couldn't view any web pages?? I had to use the backup folder to undo the changes. :(
Is the something I did wrong??
BTW...Can someone loan me 3000$ for a plane ticket? I am in dire need of a slut tech! :D
At the risk of sounding ignorant....what is spyware?

*Points finger at her, says in best Nelson voice* Ha-haa! ;)
Spyware is attached to some free programs and websites. Either you will install it mainly unnoticed (for example with Audiogalaxy Satellite), or a Javascript on the site installs it in the background while you´re visiting it (you will find this most likely on Warez-sites and, ahem...some sites with a certain adult content :D). From this moment on, this spyware will transmit some vital data like your IP, how many times you have visited this site, which links you have clicked etc. to a server. From that location, everyone who is paying for this 'service' can get your data and tailor their ads to your 'needs'. You will notice it when you´re receiving e-mail ads from 'nowhere'...
Another annoying software is AdWare...it does basically the same as SpyWare, plus it brings some pop-ups on your screen. Naughty if you suddenly find a pop-up with 'XXX'-content popping up...
You can avoid this by turning up the security level of your browser, but this is no overall good measure since you can´t visit some sites anymore (even 'normal' ones!), or you´re unable to log in on boards (like this one).
Like I´ve mentioned in another thread, Lavasoft offers a very good program, AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/). This program detects and removes these kinds of software, and it also features a backup-function in case you find some of the original programs (like AG Satellite) not running anymore after the removal process.
Hope this was of any help for you.

Make it 5000$...we want to have some fun... :D
Thanks Wave, that was very informative. You answered my question very well. ;)
Well, TC. Here is what I have been able to find so far. (Keep in mind I have no first hand experience with this program).
Apparently New.Net is installed when you install some of the popular file sharing programs (probably not limited to those though) found on the net. I.e. Kazaa, Bearshare, etc… It binds itself to your Winsock-TCP/IP stack. That is bad! Anytime you have a program overwriting your Winsock.dll, you have the potential to lose Internet connectivity. Winsock (short for Windows sockets) is an interface between a Windows TCP/IP client application (such as an e-mail client or an FTP client) and the underlying TCP/IP protocol stack. Okay. Enough geek speak. :p
After having researched this on their web site and a couple of other tech forums I visit, I have found that a lot of people are having this problem. They try to uninstall through the Add/Remove Programs utility and it freezes their system. I also found some people saying that the registry editing method failed too. They couldn’t access the net afterwards.
Have I mentioned that this is a really crappy piece of code? Companies really shouldn’t be able to create code like this that damages people’s systems.
Anyway. Ad-Aware claims that their newest version will get rid of this. I don’t doubt that for a minute, but it may well leave you where you were before. Unable to access the Internet. That’s going to have to be your call.
A second option is that according to their web site, New.Net offers free support for people having exactly the issues you are. According to them, if you e-mail them at support@new.net they will write you back and schedule a time to call you and help you fix this issue. All at their cost. Might be something to think about.
From what I have read, re-installing Windows alone won’t do the trick. People have been having to re-format their hard drives and then re-install. This would be my last option. If you decided to do this though, be sure to back up whatever you want to save before you begin.
Sorry, Kitty. Wish I had better news for you, but this looks like it’s where you stand. Hope I’ve been of a little help. :)
Shakey, it's been A LOT of help! Thanks! ;)
Thanks to wave also! ;)
You guys took time out of your busy schedules to help and I really appreciate that. :) {{{HUGS}}}
This gets even better!
I am now having problems with error messages reading, FTAPP.DLL? I checked this folder and it says it was created September 5, 2001 at 3:36am!!! AM?? heck I am never up at that time??
Not sure if you can help me? Maybe you know what this is?? Should I uninstall it?
This is very frustrating!
I am seriously thinking about doing a complete recovery. I don't have anything important saved except some pictures (waves nakey pic to be exact. :D LOL) BUT...I am not even sure how to do this? Sometimes, i think, the best solution is to throw the thing out the window! Maybe if I am lucky, when I do this , I will hit Ted in the head?! :p

My poor kitty. You really do need to watch what you download... :p That is another program that monitors your web usage. McAfee has a breakdown here. (http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99206&) At this point, if you don't mind doing it, your best bet would probably be to wipe the system and start over with a fresh setup. And watch what you download... :p
Let me know if you need any help. :)

Okay...we tech geeks have to stick together... ;)
TC...sorry to hear that the situation has worsened on your PC. If I could, I would come over right now to fix it. No second thoughts...I think. ;)
I have found another anti-virus program which might help you. I´m using it because it´s very simple to use and very effective, it´s coming for free - you only have to download and install it. You can even update it via the net for free.
Click here (http://www.free-av.com/eula.htm) to see more.
Not that McAfee is better or worser, but I simply don´t know if they offer full versions for free.
If you think that your OS is completely corrupted or just don´t work as you like, then you might want to reinstall it. If you own the complete Microsoft CD-ROM, you may try a second install without formatting your harddrive - sometimes, it works. Just insert the CD-ROM and follow the instructions. Before you do this, make sure that all data which are important to you are saved somewhere else, and notice all your passwords, registering keys, settings etc., as a certain data loss is possible.
If it won´t work (you get an error message saying 'Windows 9x/ME is already installed on this system'), you can either try to get a newer version of the OS for installation or you have to go the hard way. This is the point where Shakey should take over again...not that I don´t know how to do this, but with my rather limited English knowledge, he can surely help you better as I can do (if I would have your PC in front of me, I could do it, that´s what I´m trying to say ;)).
Don´t throw your PC out of the window unless you are really sure that Ted is lurking there. :D

I be available for help if she needs it. I personally would rather do a clean install. Just not a big fan of pancaking. To much trash left on the disk.
wavemaster 11-27-01, 11:03 AM Same here, Shakey.
I just wanted to avoid a worst case scenario for TC, as she surely don´t want to format the harddrive if there are other solutions.
TC, remember the PM with a similar content? I hope it´s still available...there are some programs mentioned that I´ve recommended. They might help you in the process of troubleshooting.

Figured as much.
So, what's happening, TC? Any progress?

Here is the lowdown, I called my internet provider tech. help line. I explained that whenever I try to do a search, I keep getting an error messager reading, 'FTAPP.DLL has cauded in error. Internet explorer will now close' They sugessted I download 'ie 6.0' and that may correct the problem. It didn't! :(
I haven't done a System Restore yet. I know the last time I did this I wasn't able to get into chat rooms. So I had to undo it.
Shakey, I am going to check out the URL you sent me. :) Thanks. ;)
Supposedly Ad-Aware will get that off of your system. If it doesn't though, you could try this.
1. Go to the “Control Panel” and then “Add/Remove Programs”
2. Remove a program titled “Ftapp”.
3. Close the control panel.
4. Click “Start”-“Search”-“For Files and Folders”.
5. Enter “ftapp”.
6. Delete any files found matching your search.
7. One folder will stay; it will say folder is in use.
8. Now go to window explorer and search your C: drive for ”ftapp”.
9. Delete the “ftapp” folder.
10. Empty the “Recycle Bin”.
11. Restart your computer.
12. After your system has rebooted, empty the recycle bin again if it stills shows having files in it.
13. Just to be sure, try running the search again for “ftapp”. If nothing is found, you should be good to go.
Let me know how things are going. :) Wave... Feel free to jump in here anytime. Two tech heads are better than one.
wavemaster 11-30-01, 04:08 PM Can´t add much now, Shakey...using AdAware was also a thought of mine.
Searched my comp for that .dll-file, but found nothing. As soon as TC has her computer in order again, we should think of setting up some security precautions for it.
I´m thinking of some programs:
- ZoneAlarm (firewall)
- RegCleaner 4.x (registry administration)
- AdAware (if not installed already)
- virus scanner (see above)

All great programs. I use each and every one of them.
I like that you recommended Zone Alarm. A lot of people don't feel they need a firewall on a dial-up system. Not true though. Firewall's are not just about keeping things out, but also about keeping things in that you don't want to go out (ie. Spyware...).
I think I got the problem fixed. I can do searches now and no errors! :) i DOWNLOADED ad-aware. I had something like 30 different spywares attached to my computer!
I don't seem to be having any problems now! ;)
Wait...I mean..umm...Its STILL acting up! I think wave needs to come here and check it out! :D Darn poopy computer!
Seriously, what pisses me off is I called my internet tech. help line and they didn't give me the same info you guys gave me?? All they were telling me was I may need to do a system recovery. If you two don't mind, may I bother you from time to time, with computer questions? :D
wavemaster 12-01-01, 12:41 PM Wo-hoo! ;)
Glad to hear that our help was a success...I mean damn, I really have to come over and fix it for good. :D
Shakey, I think that TC wouldn´t object if we both come to her rescue. ;)
About those help lines...they can be a hit or a miss. It´s possible that you will find someone who´s doing more than looking up in the database, with some real knowledge (had that luck last time after my PC crashed, corrupting certain files which were necessary for the online software). Of course, the other case is also possible (experienced this during my first call after that mentioned problem occured - he also suggested a complete OS (!) reinstallation).
Feel free to ask whatever is on your mind whenever you need an answer - as a holder of the golden 'Tech Slut VIP-card', my service is 24/24... :D
