The coputer is a Cyber-Vision C-70. The harddrive has the numbers 6.4624x on it. I can get more info if needed

Hey there. A hard drive is inexpensive. I'd just get a new one - this way you get a clean start. You'll need to have Windows installed when you set it up. Do you know how to do that? Or does your Brother? Maybe he can do it for you?

Hi'ya Topcat. Hope you didn't miss me to much. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//biggrin.gif

Now this is a topic I feel qualified to discuss. I am a computer maniac. I would take the system. You can get a good buy on a hard drive at most places right now. What, with tech stocks in the dumper. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//frown.gif

You can get a 30GB hard drive for under $100 now. That is a great deal. Here is a link you might find usefel. http://www.pricewatch.com/

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions. The address is shakey77@home.com

I'm no expert on computers but what little I do know I thought I would share with you http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//laugh.gif When I got my new computer back in Nov and up until just last month I had nothing but problems with it... After hours upon hours on the phone and about 10 hard drive re formats I finally got lucky and talked to the right person at Hewlett Packard... My system came with Windows ME, well it turns out that ME and AOL 6.0 are not compatible together! I had to switch back to 5.0 there were still problems with it so I had to shut off a lot of the unnecessary programs that loaded at startup... Anyway, just thought I'd let you know Windows ME has some bugs in it http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif

I heard that Windows ME isn't that much better than Windows 98 anyways...that's why I haven't installed it. I hate bugs! http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//E10.gif

Actually Windows ME is a fine operating system (dependant upon your needs). If you are not interested in supporting legacy devices, DOS or games, it is a good choice.

There are some nice features for the casual user. System health which lets you roll back your system in the event of a problem, faster boot up and power downs due to the bypassing of the autoexec.bat and config.sys files and the more stable kernel.

Unfortunately, I do like to game and still tinker around in DOS. So! For those like me, Windows 98 is a better choice. That is what I run on both my desktop and laptop systems. Had Linux on there for a while, but there are just to many compatibility issues.

Anyway. That is just my .02 cents worth.

I use Windows ME and I do hear that a lot of games aren't compatible for some reason. But DOS is still available. I have DOS on my Windows ME. I'll be upgrading to the new Windows XP as soon as it comes out. It's built on the Windows 2000 platform.

You're right, Sal. Guess I should expand upon my statement. DOS is still available, but not in real mode. You cannot restart your system into DOS mode without the aid of a boot disk. There is a patch floating around out there that supposedly allows you to boot into real mode, but I have a problem with modifying the base code of the OS. I'm afraid that it would lead to stability issues. Like I said though, overall, I think it is a nice OS.

Think I will hold off on XP for a while until I see how MS is going to handle this licensing issue. I don't like the fact that you would have to contact them every time you wanted to re-install Windows for a new activation code (which will cost you more money each time you use it).

Oh, yeah! Nearly forgot. On the game issue, I believe that the explorer file structure may be to blame for the incompatibility. It has a slightly modified tree. For instance, it uses the user file like Windows 2K does.

Windows ME does have great features but it was really pushing me to the point where I wanted to stomp my computer! It's sad that it took Hewlett Packard 4 months to figure out for us that ME and AOL don't mix.
