View Full Version : Is our sense of humor evaporating?

Something reminded me of this today:

When I was still in school a few years ago, a few of us were in a discussion about children and all that they entail in raising them. A few of the people in class knew that I had decided a long time ago not to have them, but one snotty little chick in class (not just my impression, even the professors thought she was a pain in the azz) asked me that question I've heard a thousand times already "Don't you LIKE children?"

Just the way she asked it, ya know?

So, just as sweetly as I could I said "I LOVE children! They're DELICIOUS!"

Well, everyone ELSE saw it for what it was and had a laugh but she was PISSED. Just all INDIGNANT.

C'mon -- really? Did she REALLY think I eat children?

Have you met people who are like that? Doesn't that seem like a miserable existance?

And if you are one of those people, let it be known that I don't REALLY eat children. It's much to hard to get them fattened up in time for the yearly feast.

I think with this society being so PC, because people have totally lost their sense of humor. You can't say anything funny without offending someone else. It's very sad. :(

You don't? Oh, then you probably want to just toss the barbecue invitation then. But still totally sent over the dessert you were bringing anyway

I think people are definitely losing their sense of humor. With the bad economy and hard times, sometimes it's difficult to find a reason to laugh for many people, but I say laugh while you still can and try to find the humor in the little things in life. :)

Brandy, the mainstream of this nation lost its sense of humor a LONG time ago.

Thank the Goddess there are still people out there for whom humor has no restrictions.

I think humor SHOULD have some restrictions. I don't think jokes about hanging black people or killing Jews or whatever are at all funny. There are some things that just plain are not funny.

But CLEARLY, I do not eat children. I also get sick of people thinking I don't like them because I decided not to have them, but that is another thread.

I mean, how far up your own azz do you have to be to think that I was SERIOUS? People need to lighten up about a LOT of stuff.

But that's just it Brandy, no...humor should NOT be restricted. You're being guilty of the same thing you're telling people to lighten up about.

When jokes are made, even the most HORRIBLE ones, they are not done to hurt. They are making a bad situation lighter.

You wondered how they could think you were serious. Now think about it, you made a joke about cannibalism. What makes that topic any less insulting to those without humor than black or Jewish jokes?

Once you start censoring humor, you kill it. End of story. It's not up to anyone to decide what anyone else finds humorous or not.

If a person doesn't think something is funny, don't listen.

That's just the bottom line.

I agree with Pagan, you can't censor humor. That would kill it. I so dislike when people with visual impairments get upset over stuff like Mr. Magoo. I do get offended at some humor, but that's me. You're always going to piss someone off. People need to lighten up.

Well, the thing is, everything is funny, until it upsets YOU. Then it's "OFFENSIVE". And, somehow people get the idea that they are entitled to never be offended.

But if someone made a joke about "n*ggers" swinging by their necks...I don't care, there IS a distinction. I'm not saying that we SHOULD censor humor, but there is a distinction. And the difference is, I was putting MYSELF in a bad light in what I said, making MYSELF look horrible, not anyone else. It was a joke on MYSELF. That is ALWAYS okay, as far as I am concerned.

There is a distinction...to YOU. One man's grabage is another man's gold.

There are people out there who will laugh at jokes like that. It's called "cringe humor", and it's VERY popular.

Like I said, you don't like it...don't listen. But what you're doing is pushing your views on others by telling them what is funny or not, when all along it's what is funny to YOU.

If someone made a joke about niggers (and yes, you can use the word. Last I heard, it hasn't been banned in this country....yet. If Chris Rock can go on HBO and use the word "cracker", you bet your ass the dreaded n-word can be used also.) being hung...it depends on the CONTEXT.

That is a huge thing when it comes to comedy. If it's malicious, then it's understandable if people get upset. The problem is, people get upset at what they PERCEIVE to be malicious.

I don't like Opie & Anthony (sorry Pagan) or Howard Stern's type of humor, but that's me. What I my think is funny someone else might not. That's what's so great about this world, but people need to try and lighten up and realize that what they might not think is funny is funny to someone else.
I like a lot of British humor, which a lot of people don't totally get.
