When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a veterinarian because I've always loved animals, and thought it would be great to work with them. Then I discovered that vets have to do things like give shots, deal with animals that have been injured, put animals to sleep, etc... Once I figured out that it wasn't a job about playing with animals I lost that ambition.

The first thing I wanted to be was a nurse. Didn't last long though. Discovered I get sick at the site of blood. lol I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. ;)

I wanted to be a dancer. When i was a kid i would dance anywhere I didn't care. I loved music and still do.

I made that dream come true in 1993.

This should be a telling little chronology... hehe

Age 4: Nova from the cartoon Star Blazers: actually, I just wanted to get my mitts on Derek Wildstar... still do!
Age 5: A ballerina
Age 7: A choreographer
...Then I found out I had flat feet, and could never dance on toe... there went ballet! :(
Age 9: An Olympic equestrian (guess who just saw International Velvet, heh!)
Age 10: A writer
Age 13: A marine biologist
Age 15: A poet
Age 16: A high school Spanish teacher
Age 19: A middle school band director
Age 22: A slacker (after dropping out of music ed. grad school)
Age 23: An employed person... LOL
Age 26: A semi-famous author, but not too famous to go to the grocery store... also, Intergalactic Empress would be nice...

The jury is still out, because I don't consider myself at all grown up!

Hey Mary, that's what I wanted to be when I was a kid! But...being deathly fearful of deep water, it kind of put a damper on that career!

When I was 13 I saw a local band called "Gates Past", and the rest - as they say - is history. I'm still trying!

I wanted to be Reggie Jackson when I was 10. I wanted to be a feared baseball player, somebody who was a hero. Well, had a scholarship offer to play ball, but dropped out of high school.

In highschool, I really wanted to be a pro wrestler. I took drama in high school, and worked out a little, but that never materialised.

Now I want to be a chef.

When I was real little, I wanted to be a teacher. When I got to be 12, I wanted to play bass in a rock band. After a few years, I got to the point where I didn't know what I wanted to be.

From about the age of nine, I have always wanted to be a writer, in some capacity. I never really wanted to be anything else. Luckily, I went to college and got my degree so that I could support myself before the writing career took off! :)

I had always wanted to be a mountie (Royal Canadian Mounter Police), ended up settling in the Customs and Immigration field until I moved to the private sector and sit behind a big desk bored all day

Well since my father worked on the RailRoad and I had such a fascination with trains growing up I always thought it would have been great to work there. To bad our local Railroad isn't what it used to be because I still would like to work there. :)

As a kid growing up, I always wanted to be a car designer. I always did a lot of drawing and wanted to be a designer of some sort while I was in high school. took up two years of drafting, 3 years of commercial art, and today after all those years of dreaming, the only thing I design are charts and forms once in a while for tracking the wine that I make.

I also do wood designs, drawing up my own patterns and cutting them out on wood, but that's more of a hobbie.

Same here!

Okay, first came the usual, from Race car Driver over Astronaut to Superhero... ;)
Being a teen, I did a lot of drawings of cars/bikes and parts, extending this to practically anything which came to mind.
It was somehow strange to see that some of the things I´d drawn in my room back then became reality (of course, without any inputs by me...).

At least, I´ve made my exams in a job which allows me to be creative - now I only have to find one...

when I was a little kid I wanted to be a vet too!

And I'll be really honest here and I'll just bet some of the women here had this for a short time in their lives - I wanted to be a solid gold dancer LOL its true. *Zel waits patiently for the laughter to die down so she can continue*

Then I went to a few creative writing workshops when I was in grade 6 and I was hooked. I have since then always wanted to be a writer. I can't write on the computer either.

I have my degree in Sociology but I don't want to be an academic. What I do now is great and contributes to saving lives but it pays for the paper and the pens and a few essentials like rent and eating :)

Zel, what do you do now?

I have always wanted to do something in the fashion industry ever since I can remember.
I also wanted to be Wonder Woman or Chris on Charles Angeles. Luckily the fashion thing worked out!

Then it was a teacher. In high school I took Dental Assisting. I was going to go on to Dental Hygiene but my GPA was not very good. I have no clue how I ended up cutting hair!?

Ah, the dream that broke my heart... My Dad was career U.S. Air Force and from the time I was old enough to understand, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Fate decided otherwise though (DAMN shakey hands  )! When I realized that dream wasn't going to happen, I fell back onto computers. A decent life and a good living, but it ain't like flying a fighter. :(

I'm jealous of the few of you who knew what you wanted to do and actually did it!
Besides vet I went thru wanting to be a rodeo cowgirl, a cosmetologist, a writer, a travel agent to name a few. I still would love to do something with the writing thing.

Imsoosure - I'm the nursing coordinator for Blood clinics in North Eastern Ontario. I'm hiding out paying bills trying to figure out whether or not to do my Masters or just work and write :)

Besides writing I haven't got a clue anymore what I want to be :)

Zel, that's a great occupation.
Topcat, I can see how you ended up as a hair stylist. Fashion designer and hair stylist I think would be a common link. I loved designing my barbies clothes too. I still have them. :)

Worthy occupations all. :)

From about 6 to 13 all I ever wanted to be was a boxer. Then I found out that everybody except Darryl Hannah was tougher than I am. :( Oh well.

Throughout high school and much of university I wanted to read russian history and literature. Then someone told me I couldn't do that for a living. :(

Does anyone know if there is a company that hires people to read War and Peace and the Campaigns of Napoleon?

TC in a way you have the best job. You get to make people look good, listen to their stories and impart some psychology. Our best friend's wife is my is a hairdresser and she's amazing. I just hug her after she's finished with my hair. If I had arms attached on the back of my shoulders I could partially do her magic but she is a true artist :)

Im glad you think so, but I really don't like my job. Its very depressing when people come in and dump their problems on you.

Sure we can make hair look good, but it really irks me when I spend alot of time on their hair and the don't take care of it! The biggist thing that upsets me is when I color their hair and they come back 3 months later with 2 inches of regrowth! Why bother coloring?? grrrr...

Sorry had to bitch! :p

If I could choose, I would ONLY cut hair. :) I could make 18$ per hour...and guys are BIG tippers :D lol

I always wanted to be a designer of some kind, but mostly a car designer. Unfortunitely, I couldn't afford the schooling I needed and have never even stepped foot in Detroit.
About three years ago when my then 18 year old daughter said she wanted to get into Computer Assisted Drafting and Design (CADD), We told her that we would make it work if that's what she wanted to do. She took the classes at ITT Tech., graduated, and today is working as a successful designer for an engineering group, so I guess I'm living my dreams through her accomplishments and I couldn't be more proud of her. :)
