PETA Attempts To Make Fish More Adorable
January 12, 2009 · "Sea kittens" is the new term being used by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, for the creatures they believe are in dire need of an image makeover: fish.
"PETA thought that by renaming fish sea kittens, compassionate people who would never dream of hurting a dog or a cat might extend that sympathy to fish, or sea kittens," PETA campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne says.
Byrne says that rebranding fish as sea kittens was obvious.
"Fish not only have the same ability to feel pain as a dog or a cat, but they also communicate with one another," she says. "They have complex social interactions; they form bonds; they express affection by gently rubbing against one another."
The PETA campaign boasts a colorful, interactive Web site aimed at children and their parents. It offers sea kitten bedtime stories and a design-your-own sea kitten in hopes it will build compassion in families.
"Most parents would never dream of spending a weekend torturing kittens for fun with their families, but hooking a sea kitten through the mouth and dragging her through the water is the same as hooking a kitten through the mouth and dragging her behind your car," Byrne says.

BrandyBlue 1-20-09, 02:16 PM I will not chime in one way or another about how I feel about fishing. That isn't the point.
The REAL point is, if they actually put as much effort into FUNDRAISING for homeless animals, for spay/neuter, for prosecuting people who torture animals, for feeding animals, etc., as they put into this mindless BS, we would put a BIG dent in suffering.
They have wandered so far into the "LOOK AT ME!!! ATTENTION WHORE!!!" world, and it is too bad because that is not what they started out to do.
Meanwhile, animal shelters all over the country that you rarely hear a peep from because they don't have the money PETA does, struggle to keep up with the rush of animals given up because of this shiteous economy...

Exactly.
As for fishing...for sport, no. For food, most certainly.
nolanbuc 1-20-09, 06:06 PM I don't have a problem with any type of fishing, as long as it's done in a responsible manner. And as for sport fishing, alot of sport fishermen would like to keep and eat what they catch, but they are not allowed to in order to maintain fish populations.
The problem I have with most "animal rights" people is their hypocrisy and inconsistency, like people who wear leather shoes and rail against the fur trade. Even though PETA lost their credibility long ago, at least they are consistent. Consistently nuts, but still...
I kinda like this idea, I'm going to start refering to kittens as landfish. ;) Kinda makes you hungry, doesn't it?

Stephen Colbert thought that would be a good idea too
There is a difference between those who believe in animal welfare and those who believe in animal rights. Although I wish I could put myself in the animal rights category, I can't simply because of antics like this one, so I am an animal welfare advocate. This was the subject of a research paper I did in college and there are some big differences there.
Animal rights people often cut off their noses to spite their faces and it's a shame, it really is. There are so many animals out there that need help, and they spend money on this devisive crap :(

Well put. It's too bad everyone involved animal causes often gets lumped into the same category.
