It may have been dominated with perms, yuppies and shoulder pads but the 1980s has been voted coolest decade of the past 50 years, according to a survey.

Some 41% of people questioned in an online survey said the 80s was their favourite decade, followed by the 60s and the 90s.

The Noughties polled as the least cool decade since 1960, with only 10% of people saying it was their favourite.

The Live Aid pop concert was the thing people liked best about the 80s, ahead of the Rubik's Cube and the Pac Man computer game.

The yuppie's favourite accessory, the Filofax, came fourth in the poll followed by the films Dirty Dancing and The Goonies in joint fifth place.

The 1980s revival has in recent years seen repeats, remakes and sequels to a string of popular films and television shows.

Harrison Ford returned to star as Indiana Jones and Sylvester Stallone has made new Rocky and Rambo films.

Eighties revivalists have also managed to bring back the Yo-Yo, sweat bands and black eyeliner while 80s pop and rock acts including Prince have made successful comebacks, according to the survey by online sweet shop aquarterof.co.uk.

The 1960s came second in the poll, with 20% of the votes. From that decade England winning the World Cup was the thing people remembered most fondly ahead of The Beatles and the Moon landings.

The 90s polled 17% of votes, with technology - the internet and mobile phones - featuring high up in people's likes ahead of The Simpsons.

That's awesome. It's about time the 80s decade gets the respect it deserves. I'm glad to see this.

I believe the 80's gets it's respect from it's individualism. The 60's was a time when non- conformity and liberation really started to come in. Then in the 70's porn, punk, then in the 80's anything went, music, fashion colour, hairstyle, gangsta rap, Australia copying everything American. The 90's,WTF happened in the 90's that was so breaking for the decade?. Now look at today, music is heavily 80's influenced, teenagers wear recycled 80's/ retro fashion and colours. Alot of new style (or recyled) style t-shirts/ tops are bright fluro colours. Again there is nothing groundbreaking for the noughties.

Live Aid, i think was the first concert of it's kind ever. I think also that the appeal with the 80's came down to it's simplicity and accessability of lifestyle.
