My Mom has about seven bird feeders and there is this cat that has been hanging around which is scaring off the birds. We don't know where the cat is coming from. I know people say to get rid of the cat, get rid of the bird feeders, but my Mom doesn't want to do that. Does anyone have suggestions to deter the cat from getting the birds without harming the cat?

I have a few suggestions... oh wait, you said without hurting the cat.
Nope, no idea.
Capture the cat and bring it to the pound. Problem solved!

show birds old Warner Bros cartoons to teach said birds how to outsmart a puddy tat
seriously, my father has the same problem with raccoons climbing the tree's and and wrecking the bird feeders trying to get at the food, he wrapped a big sheet of thin metal around the base of the tree so they couldn't climb it (they still did but a cat probably couldn't) .
You could wait for the cat then turn the hose on it.
*edit for all you cat haters...Not hit the cat with the hose but turn the water on and shoot the water at the cat.
Get a dog!! Just a thought!! ;)
That's a really tough one! My mom has the same problem but there are also a lot of natural predators in the area (hawks, etc) and there's not much to do about those, either. If it's not hawks or cats eating her "customers" it's chipmunks eating her seeds. You really can't win. ;)
One alternative might be to get a window-mounted bird feeder in an area the cat can't menace. (second floor window?) Just be sure not to put it over a doorway, or you might have something other than rain falling from overhead! (Had to rethink my own 2nd floor bird feeder plans b/c of this detail!)
