View Full Version : Albums That Had More Potential Hits
This is kind of similar to the "lost hits" thread on the Introduce yourself board. But I was wondering have there been any 80's albums that maybe had 1 or 2 hits on it, but you thought should have had from 4 to 6 hits off it and should have sold millions more than they did?
A couple that I thought this for were:
1. Seven The Hard Way: Pat Benatar - 1985
It had hits with Invincible(#10) and Sex As A Weapon(#28), but then the 3rd single, Le Bel Age bombed and no more were released. There are also killer rock tracks like 7 Rooms Of Gloom, Red Vision, and Big Life that could have been hits.
2. The River- Bruce Springsteen- 1980
There's only one big hit, Hungry Heart(#5), and there was Fade Away(#20), but no one seems to remember Fade Away. There are so many songs that should have been classic sing a long songs that never got airplay, like I'm A Rocker, Cadillac Ranch, Ties That Bind, You Can Look, Out In The Street, Sherry Darling, the list goes on and on. I think Cadillac Ranch and Sherry Darling were singles somewhere in Europe, but they weren't in the US.

Sal Collaziano 3-13-01, 09:31 AM This seems like an interesting topic. I'm just gonna bump it back up near the top. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//tongue.gif

The loneliness just fades away
thoughts of you just memories
no cryin now for what we're missin
time won't forget what you meant to me
How about "Naked Eyes" by Naked Eyes. I thought the whole album was great and didn't get near the airplay it should have.

If I'm here and your here doesn't that make it our time?
I don't think these two albums had any "hits", but they should have.

I don't know much about 999, other than they are from England. Their albums are avallable on Amazon.com.
Missing Persons was known for their songs, Destination Unknown, Walking In L.A., and Windows. Words, or What Are Words For, is my favorite.

tupper66 3-17-01, 10:01 PM Ahh, EBG, I couldn't agree more with you about Bruce's The River album. It just kicks butt from the first song to the last! Of course, they ALL should have been hits, if you ask me, but then again, if you ask me, I also think he should be prez and we all should be kissing his feet. Or other parts of him. But that's another topic in itself. Anyways, it brings up a good point: "#1 hit" is NOT synonymous with "best"!! Just because a bunch of morons who can't take a step unless it's to follow the crowd push a song to the top doesn't necessarily mean it's the greatest one going at that particular time. I always went for the lesser known ones myself... prefer The Eurythmics' "Love is a Stranger" to any of their bigger hits, Madonna's "Burning Up" to the others on that album, Adam Ant's "Strip" to "Goody Two Shoes", Cyndi Lauper's "All Through the Night" and "She Bop" to "Girls.." and "Time After Time", Guns & Roses' "Mr. Brownstone" and "Rocket Queen" to "Welcome to the Jungle" or "Paradise City", etc. I never could figure it. Personally I think I just have a higher, more refined degree of taste. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Some albums rock all the way through and are all but ignored now. *sigh*... another reason I think the majority of society be all frigged in de head! (Btw, "sherry Darling" is a BUTT-KICKING song!!!) http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/smilies//smile.gif Sue
Hey tupper66, yeah Sherry Darling rocks! Did you see Bruce at all on the Reunion Tour? I saw 9 shows. Never saw him play Sherry Darling. I did see Hungry Heart, Out In The Street, Ties That Bind, Point Blank, The River, You Can Look, and Two Hearts though.
Do you have Tracks? Disc 2 with the River outakes is incredible- Roulette, Where The Bands Are, Dollhouse, I Wanna Be With You, Be True, Loose Ends, WOW!
Tupper66, I'm right with you on "Love Is a Stranger" (excellent tune) and "Strip." With regard to Cyndi Lauper, I'll go with "Change of Heart" over the obligatory "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "She-Bop." Along those lines, I'd take Robert Palmer's "You Are in My System" over "Addicted to Love" (ugh!) or "Simply Irresistable" any day.
tupper66 3-31-01, 12:21 AM EBG-- oh, you're killing me! No, I've never been to a Bruce show. It's my dream to somehow make one, someday. You hit NINE SHOWS this last time around?? *sigh*.... So no 'Sherry Darling', huh? What kind of stuff was he playing? I've built him up in my mind so badly over the years that I'm almost AFRAID to go see him: what if it's not all I've dreamt it would be? I simply wouldn't be able to face life the same way again! I know how goofy that sounds, so I'll move on here. I just downloaded 'Bishop Dance' (live from Max's Kansas City) a few weeks ago from Napster-- haven't heard that song in years-- not since I was a sophomore in HS.... ('85)-- I was surprised to find I still remembered all the words! Speaking of Bruce, did you ever listen to Little Steven's album, Out of the Darkness? It had some great, rocking songs on it. How about any of Nils Lofgren's stuff?

tupper66 3-31-01, 12:40 AM TD-- ugh, wasn't "SImply Irresistable" the dumbest song ever?? And the video was even worse-- and I'm not talking about the brain-dead women in it-- I mean HIM, twitching his head all over in this cocky way that made me want to slap him. You know what's even worse? Tina Turner's remake of that song. Don't get me wrong, Tina's great, but.... first off, out of all the great songs in the archives she could have picked to redo, she picks a moronic one. But to make it even WORSE, she frigs up the lyrics-- that part where he sings, "you like to think that you're immune to the stuff"-- she sings "you like to think that you're in need of the stuff"-- !!!! Ugh! Every time I hear it I could scream! That doesn't even makes sense in the context of the song! Why didn't anyone correct her before they recorded it? You're telling me NO ONE in the studio picked up on that?? Anyway...
I was thinking of some albums that are just one great song after another-- the kind of albums you can play straight through and never have to skip a song. One of them is Def Leppard's 'High and Dry"-- fantastic album! "Mirror Mirror", "No No NO", "Hit and Run"... just a good, solid collection of songs. Also, 'Don't Look Back' from Boston. And Steely Dan's 'Gold'.... Oh, btw, EBG-- Pat Benatar's "Le Bel Age" is one of the greatest songs there is-- funny how it didn't do well, but an annoying song like "Invincible" did. Shoot-- I'm too tired to remember all my other "all the way through" albums right now. You guys got any?
Sue
whistledog 1-28-05, 09:19 PM The North American only release KC Ten by KC in 1983 (The international release is better known as All in A Nights Work by KC & the Sunshine Band). The only hit from it was the popular 'Give it Up'.. but I thought there was atleast a few more hits that should have come from it like the wonderful 'Yes, I'm Ready'
Christine 1-29-05, 11:43 AM I completely agree about "The River" by Bruce Springsteen....what an amazing album! I don't think there is really a bad track on the album - most of them could have been hits. :thumb:

I agree.."Naked Eyes" was one of the best new wave albums. It had so many other potential hits like "Voices In My Head", "Fortune and Fame" and "When the Lights Go Out" (which was a minor hit).

You're talking about "Addicted to Love" NOT "Simply...". I love the song and the album it comes from...I don't think it's dumb at all. Tina's version is just a live version..she never recorded a studio version...her live version is ok. Robert Palmer was asked once what he thought of her singing it and all he said was "I like it..but at least she could learn the words" LOL.
I would say China Crisis - Working with fire and steel. Here only Whishfull thinking was brought out as a single, but the whole album is great.

Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Of the 11 songs on that album, I like eight of them. The songs that I thought could be hits:
"Long Long Way To Go"
"Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore"
"Inside Out"
"We Said Hello Goodbye" ***
*** - Apparently, this song was on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary chart in 1988
