View Full Version : You first saw Mtv?
Sorry if this has been done before, but they've been playing the first hour Mtv was on the air in '81, including the original videos, etc.
and it brought back memories of how fun it was then.
When did you first see Mtv, or how did you find it?
and what were your favorite videos from the time?
I was told about it by a friend in '82, (I was 12) and loved it from the start.
Martha Quinn and Alan (whatever) were the best, and a couple of fav videos were,
Cliff Richards 'It's so funny, why we don't talk anymore..'
Brass in Pocket, The Pretenders (I thought she was cool, and I loved the video)
there's more, but I'll stop now :)
It should have ben done ON MTV itself!!
MTV is nothing but garbage now!!
But @ least they have the 1st hour (100% intact) on thier website!!

Metalfan83 8-05-06, 12:55 PM It wasn't until roughly 89 - 90 that I saw MTV for the first time (we never had cable prior to that.) The first video I remember seeing was "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits. (Or... at least, I'm pretty sure it was. )
Back then, I liked Paula Abdul's video for "Opposites Attract". I think it might've been the little animated guy that "danced" with her throughout that video.
ImSoooSure 8-05-06, 01:17 PM I was lving in Iowa so it was 1982 and I was with my brother and two of his friends in the basement of a friends house watching it. The first video I remember was Jack and Diane.
DJ Midas 8-20-06, 01:23 AM It was October 1983 when my family got cable. Prior to that I watched videos on some UHF channel. Some of the first videos I remember seeing were from Men At Work ("Who Can It Be Now", "Be Good Johnny", "It's A Mistake", "Overkill", "Down Under"), Roger Hodgson's "Had A Dream", "Burning Down The House" by Talking Heads, stuff by Culture Club, etc. I remember watching the Friday Night Video Fight; Van Halen's, "Jump" was champ for quite a while. :yesnod:
Livinginthe80's 2-20-07, 06:55 AM I think it was 1985/ 86, i never really got to watch it because it was on so late. I don't recall any specific videos, but i always liked the intro theme. Our version was hosted by a guy called Richard Wilkins who had/ still has his spiky mullet. He now pops up on our televisions in the morning, on a show called "Sunrise". Even as a kid i thought MTV was cool, then there was Max Headroom and these bizarre ads/ interludes.
80s Queen 2-23-07, 01:03 PM A friend first told me about it in 1983. Got kind of a late start. But, once I started watching I was hooked. As far as a fav video is concerned, too many to mention. I didn't even know they were running the first hour. It's not like I check in with them very often any more. Not worth it.
leadsled 9-16-07, 07:21 PM I think I watched it for the first time a few nights after it aired after hearing about it at school.
Of course at the time I was absolutely in love with Pat Benatar!
I heard about it when it first came out, but didn't know anyone with cable TV. A few months later 'tho I started babysitting some neighbors who had cable and I'd get the kids to sleep and stare mezmerized at the TV the rest of the time. The first videos I remember distinctly were "Say Goodbye" by Triumph on the flying guitar and something by Cheap Trick where the guitarist freaked me out with his skull sweater and crazy looks. I've searched for it on YouTube, but I can't figure out which song it was. Sounds like a good thing for where can I find this song...
Torchwood Fan 4-11-08, 04:18 PM My family didn't get MTV until 1987, but I remember seeing MTV at a family friend's house back in 1982/1983. The first videos I remember seeing were "Games Without Frontiers" - Peter Gabriel, "Emenence Front" - The Who, "Face Dances" - Pete Townshend, "Baby Jane" - Rod Stewart and I think "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" by Culture Club.
djdaffy1227 4-11-08, 04:21 PM We had just got cable at my house and flipping through we (me, my two sisters and brother) saw a music video for "You got lucky" by Tom Petty. We didn't know what it was but they kept playing music so we stuck around to watch.
i was 11 and living in california at the time. I was thrilled to see the artist on tv and being able to sing and dance along to the video was a big plus.
then, i moved to texas in 83 and at first didn't have cable for quite a while. took a while for small town to catch up with the times. "the times they are a changing"
but once we got cable and i saw madonna dancing on the street to "burning up", or should i say rolling around on the street, i was hooked. and like it was said previously mtv is just horrible now....what happened to actually watching videos?
