PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- A costly mistake at an Indiana gas station early Tuesday morning means the business is out a lot of money.

The mistake at regular unleaded pumps at a Shell station in Plainfield allowed people to fill up for just pennies.

Gas at the station was supposed to be $2.75 a gallon, but customers pulled up to the pumps to find a price of $.002 a gallon. [more]http://www.wdsu.com/automotive/9181126/detail.html?rss=no&psp=irresistible

A woman went into the store and told the clerk what was going on, showing her receipt for a few cents for several gallons of gas.Seems like thees always 1 person to me$$ up a good thing!!

Yikes... I'm surprised word didn't spreak quicker than wildfire and a traffic jam didn't form around the pumps... :goofy:

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's kind of a concience examiner though. I don't know whitch one I'd be. Would I really just take it for the few cents? or would I report it. It makes you think. I'd like to think I was honest but who knows.

The gas station is trying to determine if it can go back and charge the people who got the bargain regular price after the fact. Now THAT'S BULLHOCKEY! :tsk: I could understand their frustration if it had gone on all day or longer... but sheesh, it was a few people... they'll make that up in profits before the end of the day!

If they're using credit cards, how did they know it wasn't a 'super double bonus reward for having 50,000 points!!!' ? Have you seen the stuff they're giving away with the gas charge cards? Or worse, the cards that aren't for charging, but you can earn points to get a free hot dog. All you have to do is spend $500, and that hot dog is all yours, bay-bee!!!

I've seen them giving away $100 in free gas at some stations if you're approved for the credit card, so I highly doubt that a few (at most, what, 50?) people getting nearly free gas is going to bankrupt them.
