View Full Version : The Young Ones - favourite character?
swedishchef 4-07-06, 06:51 PM I don't see this fantastic British series mentioned here, or British comedy in general. But some of you must have enjoyed "The Young Ones" either back then or later on video/dvd. Who was your favourite character of these four weird English students? I don't know really myself, but I used to feel sorry for Neil, and Rik (Mayall) was a both pathetic and complex personality. Vyvyan's violent manners was refreshing sometimes, but Mike wasn't as funny as the others, even if he had a few good lines (and he kept a rubber doll in his bed despite his supposed success with the ladies).
Vyv! He was the man! I love that show, and will watch the DVDs every now and then.
Very very hard to come up with a favourite between Vyv, Neil and Ric. In the end I went for Vyv, because he had the funniest ways of dealing with situations including teaching Rik a lesson... mindless violence.
Tough choise, but went with Rick.
"We NEVER clean the toilet, Neil! That's what being a student is all about! No way, Harpic! No way, Dot! All that Blue Loo scene is for squares. One thing's for sure, Neil. When Cliff Richard wrote "Wired for Sound", no way was he sitting on a clean lavatory! He was living on the limit, just like me. Where the only place to put bleach is in your hair!"
Edit: Btw chef - we had a little poll regarding British comedy right here (http://www.80sxchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40308). Check it out :thumb:
I went for vyv because he's totally MENTAL! I also think that Rik Mayal was much better in the New Statesman as Alan B'Stard, although in the young ones he's a close second! Neil was funny but boring and the character of Mike was Plain crap!! I have a question though, why isin't alexie Sayle metioned in the poll of characters? He's in nearly every episode!
80sTrivia 4-18-06, 02:20 PM I had to vote for deadbeat Neil... I used to love watching this show with my sister!
Mr Morningstarr* 4-30-06, 08:29 AM I'm surprised Rik isn't winning, I thought he was everyones favourite.
The Young Ones was the most influencial comedy of the eighties, surely?
When I first left home I shared a house with three other mates, it was just like the young ones. I was Vyvian! :dgrin:
Vyvyan was the best by far
swedishchef 5-06-06, 08:12 PM Thanks for your replies, I can tell The Young Ones aren't completely forgotten...:)
They re-run it on UK Gold in the UK, i'll go with Rik. They were all good apart from Mike!
Mr Morningstarr* 6-01-06, 05:17 AM But, Mike was cool. :D
BeavisBeavis 6-01-06, 03:31 PM I know he's not one of the students but my favorite character is probably Jerzy with Billy being second and Neil, Rick, Mike and Vyvyan all being third, lol
DiggityDawg 6-04-06, 12:31 PM When I first left home I shared a house with three other mates, it was just like the young ones.
 ...same here. Gawd...we trashed that place.
And as for favorite character...what, no option to choose SPG? "Oy...UP SCUMBAG!!!!"
BeavisBeavis 6-05-06, 06:48 AM Oh yeah, I like SPG, too, I even name my hamster after him and they act the same, too! But I think my SPG is more violent.
Miss Crabtree 6-16-06, 03:56 PM Probably Vyv, the way he'd slap around Rik's idiotic socialist dweeb character! I loved the ep where the house was haunted and the headless ghost's head landed in the next door neighbor's lap.
big20reunion 7-05-06, 07:46 AM Vyvian and rik for me made the show endless laughs and of course I also enjoyed filthy rich and catflap and bottom....
I'm surprised Rik isn't winning, I thought he was everyones favourite.
Rik was a COMPLETE AND UTTER BASTARD!!!
Got both series of this on DVD now. And "Filthy Rich & Catflap"
It was a tough choice between Vyvian and Rik, but I chose Vyvian.
though Rik was great in 'Drop Dead Fred'
Torchwood Fan 5-12-08, 05:41 AM Man, tough one, but I had to pick Rik, but my second choce was Mike. If you asked me a few years ago, it would have been Mike and then Rik. I'm just a huge Rik Mayall fan, so I had to pick Rik.
I voted for Rik. I loved him on all the other shows too, his guest star turns on Blackadder were hysterical as well.
"I'm going to write to the lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen!"
It's been way too long! I need to get The Young Ones on Netflix or something! Definitely have to watch that one when the kids are sleeping :dgrin:
Iluvthe80s 5-12-08, 05:06 PM My favorite is definately Vyvian.
Livinginthe80's 8-10-08, 12:50 AM Rik for sure, with his poetry dedicated to Cliff richard. They were all great though, an excellent show.
