Country Great Jones Hospitalized, Recovering

Even hard-livin' country music legends have to take it easy once in a while.

Veteran honky-tonk rocker and balladeer George Jones was hospitalized for pneumonia Thursday in Nashville, Jones' label, Bandit Records, announced.

The "He Stopped Loving Her Today" singer is "resting comfortably and is expected to make a full recovery," according to a statement on GeorgeJones.com.

Jones, 74, hasn't shown too many signs of slowing down in past years, even after a 1999 car crash left him critically injured. The Grammy winner who got his start crooning rockabilly tunes in the 1950s maintains a concert schedule that includes about 95 shows a year. Three shows set for this weekend in Georgia, Florida and Tennessee will be rescheduled, per Jones' Website.

On his latest tour Jones has been promoting the 2005 album Hits I Missed...And One I Didn't, which features tunes that the singer passed on recording, only to see others score big with them.

Perhaps keeping such a packed datebook is Jones' way of playing catch-up. The Country Music Hall of Famer's hard-drinking lifestyle earlier in his career earned him the nickname "No Show Jones"--in 1979 Jones missed 54 shows, reportedly due to drug and alcohol problems--but he entered rehab in the early '80s. He relapsed in 1999, nearly dying in drunken car crash, but has been sober since.

Born and raised in Texas, Jones' first single, "No Money in this Deal," was released on a local label in 1954. After sharing billing with Elvis on the Louisiana Hayride radio show a couple of years later, he went on to record a box set-worth of top-10 hits over the next two decades.

Jones also sang a number of duets with wife Tammy Wynette but, after six years, the pressures of standing by her man while he battled substance abuse problems became too much for her and the couple divorced in 1975.

Meanwhile, Jones posted a message on his site dedicated to longtime cohort and fellow country great Buck Owens, who died of a heart attack Mar. 25 at the age of 76.

"I am glad Buck and I got to spend some time together on his recent West Coast tour," Jones said on his Website. "He was a wonderful friend and he will be dearly missed."
