View Full Version : An Irony for Howard Stern

Sirius Moves to Censor Stern
Howard Stern may curse the day he decided to leave terrestrial radio and jump to Sirius – the satellite broadcaster is taking steps to censor the shock jock.
The morning drive-time radio host said he left terrestrial radio because he was fed up with censorship by individual stations and FCC fines for indecency. Now, in what must be a painful irony for Stern, Sirius executives are developing an internal document that will set boundaries for his show. [more]As long as Sirius puts a WARNING on HOWARDS channel for content,THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TELLING HIM HE CANT DO WHATEVER HE WANTS TO!!!!!!!!
You should hear OPIE AND ANTHONY on XM,they are unreal i hear....Swearing every 2 minutes,etc........If XM doesnt care,WHY DOES SIRIUS??????
Maybe Howard should see about transfering his contract to XM instead, then he wont be censored, this is unreal!!!!!
Sirius is being pricks about this, maybe they dont really like Howard,i dunno..........(They should, they are making alot of $$$ from him)
I asked The howard stern show if they would consider STREAMING THIER SHOW also from thier website, but i havent heard anything from them (Then people who didnt have Sirius could still hear him)
I hope it all works out for him,i dunno Y they are treating him like this...........
Don't get me started on Stern. I'd be ranting for hours at his hypocritical ass.
Stern can't go to XM because XM isn't stupid enough to throw $500 million dollars at a washed-up has-been DJ. I saw that one of the first things he did on Sirius was a bit O&A did 8 months ago, and now he's re-recording all his old bits that he did with Jackie Martling over, only using Artie instead of Jackie.
Wow...way to do innovative radio, Howie.
O&A would bury him if they were on the same company.
Funny how much Pagan knows about sterns show, when he doesnt listen to it.
Either way, Howards show isnt that bad at all to where it needs to be censored, it isnt that risque, and isnt that sexual in nature 99% of the time.
Now, Bubba the Love Sponge show, THAT man is filthy, in a good way of course. His material is ten times more censor worthy than Stern or O&A are.
Funny how much Pagan knows about sterns show, when he doesnt listen to it.
That's cause O&A spend a few minutes each day laughing at his sterility. ;)
Aside from the fact that listening to Howard for almost 18 years, you get to know his M.O.
He was the king in the late 80's and the early 90's. He's done now.
And the reason Sirius is going to censor him is because they threw so much money at him and Martha Stewart that they're in the red....BIG time. They'll now have to carry commercials in order to stay afloat, and because of that they need sponsors to sign on who won't do so with Howard cursing.
Sirius is in deep shit, because with Howie's "incentives" his contract is now worth more than $670 million.
Read for yourself: Stern Compensation At Sirius Higher Than Estimated (http://www.forbes.com/markets/equities/2006/01/27/sirius-howard-stern-0127markets03.html)
And that's from FORBES magazine. Sirius threw all their eggs in one basket by giving Howie such a large contract while XM went and got way more for their money. Sirius got Martha Stewart, XM got Oprah and Ellen Degeneres. Sirius got Richard Simmons, XM got Sean Hannity and Snoop Dogg. Sirius got Howie on the way down, XM got O&A on the way up.
So, your total knowledge of Sterns show is from his competitors? I am sure that will give you an accurate portrayal of how his show is going.
I could care less how much he's getting paid, how much money they are spending, or anything of the sort. He entertains me. Much more than I can say for O&A who I have yet to laugh at any of their material.
And, there wouldnt BE an O&A if not for Stern, we both know that.

They read articles written about him bro, so it's in black & white. I've read some of the articles also, and the words "boring", "old", "tired" and "no passion" have been used quite often. And these are from magazines that used to LOVE him. So yea, I think I have a pretty accurate portrayal.
You're right, different strokes for different folks. Sorry, but Stern doesn't do anything for me anymore. Small penis jokes, yelling "Bababooey" during prank calls, and asking celebs how many "chicks" they've laid gets old after awhile.
When Stern had Jackie and Billy West on the show, no one could touch that show. However, that wasn't due to HIM. Now that he's lost his talent and is saddled with that load Artie and that USELESS waste of a paycheck Robin, there's nothing there. Then again, I hated Robin from the beginning.
As for not laughing at O&A, you already admitted you didn't listen to much of them, so I can use your own argument back against you.
O&A freely admit that they were influenced by Stern. No one denies that. Lots of bands are influenced by the Stones, but as witnessed by their superbowl performance last week, it's over Johnny. Just cause you influence doesn't mean you're better.
And psssst....there wouldn't be a Howie if there wasn't an Imus, so unlike he loves to tell everyone he didn't invent the type of radio he's doing. Imus was doing it in the 70's. Does that mean Imus is better?
And you should care what he's getting paid, because when Sirius goes toes up like almost EVERY financial expert is predicting due to their waste of $670 million dollars, Stern will be back on terrestrial radio....bitching about the FCC again.
Yawn.
Well, I listen to O&A about three times a week. Usually when cleaning house, or other random shit around the house. They just dont make me laugh. Hell, there were a duo here in St Louis that was ten times better than O&A and Howard, and they moved up to Chicago (Woody and the Whipping Boy)
Either way, The people I feel sorry for, if Sirius does go out of business are the ones who only signed up for howard or for Martha. Those of us who have it, and listen to the music are the ones who will get left out.

I've heard about Woody & The Whipping Boy! What are they like?
I hear you about that...siging up for one channel only to have the whole shebang come crashing down would suck.
At least if Howard just was off they'd still have the music and sports channels, same with O&A. If the whole company goes bankrupt....yow.
BrandyBlue 2-10-06, 09:04 PM The real lesson is, just because Howard THINKS he can say and/or do anything that he wants, he's not necessarily right. I do agree that if there is a warning on the show that there should be a generous margin of liberty in what he is allowed to do. However, in real life, the fact remains that you may choose to say what you like but that doesn't mean that there might not be consequences for it.
I'm not saying that the consequences are right or wrong, but that they have always and will always exist, everywhere, in some form. I think he was wildly naive in thinking that on satellite radio that he would be able to do what he wanted. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is, no matter what anyone tells you. He should have been more leery of that, having been in the business since Madonna was a virgin. Is there any business more full of liars than show business?
Woody and the whipping boy were the afternoon jocks on the station howard was on. They were so incredibly funny. THey never really did any bits, or crap like that, they were just hysterical to listen to. VERY interactive with the fans, had a ton of contests, and crap. One thing I do remember is they got Paris Hiltons cell phone number and called her on the air. That was right after her sex tape came out. And, they did it like it was a real "interview" but they asked her the most rediculous questions and she was trying to answer them like her publicist would want.
The thing that got them run out of St Louis was thier halloween contest. The "CRACK-O-LANTERN" contest. THey had women take photos of them, showing thier asses painted like jackolanterns. Nothing TOO bad, but some people were complaining to the local media about it, and they got all kinds of crap. Eventually Emmis, the company that owns the station just sends them to Chicago instead of keeping them around.
Shame too, since I had never before made a habit of coming home and turning the radio on, until those guys were brought to my attention.
EDIT: Just googled them and found out they moved out to San Francisco to host the Morning show on one of the stations there who Stern just left.

Yes, but his position, and it's one that I agree with, is that people are PAYING to hear him. He isnt on the normal airwaves. People have to go out, buy a reciever, hook it up, initiate the service, and then tune in. Its not like people are going to happen accross his show while on the way to work with the kids. If you are listening to him, its because you made a decision to. Just like Cable TV can show things that regular TV cant.
nolanbuc 2-10-06, 10:37 PM I got Sirius for Christmas and I have to admit that it was tough call over XM, but I went with Sirius for the NFL and better college sports coverage. Stern factored in my decision in a minor way, as I did listen to him occassionally on terrestrial radio and wanted to hear how the show would be on satellite.
Now that I have Sirius, I am disappointed in some things, including the fact that they dropped Fox News and have only 1 national sportstalk network (XM has 3), both of which are a result of them paying Stern his exhorbidant contract, so they are cutting corners elsewhere. The music selection is great, and I like the old VJ's from MTV on the 80's channel. And I like listening to Sirius at work on the PC, but you can only listen to music and nothing else, not even the programs produced by Sirius. (I've heard that XM has most everything online).
I'm also disappointed in Stern's show on Sirius, because there's no mystery anymore. They have been doing whatever they want, so there's no envelope to push anymore, and some of it is just boring. Sirius is winning in the short run because their new subscriptions are way up, but if they keep skimping on other channels to pay for Howard, they will lose customers in the long run, including me.
Well Buc, didnt you guys in Memphis get ROVER to replace Stern?
At least you dont HAVE to listen to that crap every day! Be thankful!
nolanbuc 2-10-06, 11:04 PM  Ron
When I listen to local radio in the morning, I listen to the Wake-Up Crew on Rock 103 or Drake & Zeke on 98, the same ones I've listened to for years. I haven't even heard Howard's replacement here, just not interested.
Save yourself the trouble. The guy they had replace him here, ROVER is his name. He's a frieking HACK.
He reminds me of the Jimmy Fallon Z 100 DJ on SNL.
Totally Crappy voice, totally crappy subjects. Has a female sidekick who sounds like a generic female radio girl. Typical, predictable, and not worth a damn.
To say he is bad is offensive to BAD things everywhere.
Others seem to think this is all a stunt to get more listeners,i dunno.......
Howard's replacement here in Seattle is a popular local guy named BJ Shea. He doesn't have the swearing so much but he is funny. I used to listen to him when he did mid-days, now he does mornings so my morning hours are pretty much all him on the radio. There are four main characters on the show:
BJ Shea - Host
Topshelf - Engineer/Resident drunk
Double R - Sportscaster/general goof up
Steve the producer - Producer/all other categories.
you can catch them monday through Friday 6 AM to 10 AM Pacific time on KISW 99.9 FM The rock of Seattle (http://www.kisw.com).
I have listened to Howard on Sirius & the novelty has definitly worn off.
I'm a Don & Mike fan myself.
Pagan, be nice :D  :mwaha:
It is always good readin' when Jasper and Pagan debate. :p
My 2 cents and not that it matters, I can't stand Stern. Shelling out 670 million for anyone is insane. Regardless of what happens, Stern is one rich SOB.

I thought I told you I already knew you weren't going to find it funny?
Just out of morbid curiosity, what exactly has Howard done that's funnier in the last 10 years? I'm really curious, cause I've listened to him for years and never heard him do anything funnier. Like I said, just curious.
Maybe if O&A got a stripper to come in and get naked and then they rated her body you'd like it?
Go yell "Baba Booey" at someone....:p

First the strippers and porn stars bore me as well.
I like the interviews when celebs come in and he gets into thier background and shit like that. Plus, even though you hate him, I love hearing the Artie Lange "when I was a raging coke fiend" stories from time to time.
That, and the overall interaction between the cast.
But, that's just me.

I'll post a link to the "shit stories" discussion on O&A one day. I guarantee you'll laugh at that one!
