I got paged this morning at 7 AM due to a system being down and it got me curious. Who else here is in an on-call rotation and what do you do?

In my case this morning, one of our Solaris systems took a dump, so I had to go in and hard boot it (the monkey pushes the button).

I know Roem does on-call, but I am just curious who else does (and if you don't, be happy)?

I think I'm on call always?, I don't have a set schedule saying your on call don't be away or anything, However I have a cell phone, laptop, blackberry and get calls evenings and weekends and sometimes in the middle of the night . I sometime keep the laptop on at home just to answer questions throughout the night.

I also get e-mails at 3am from the Vice President in Toronto when the daily numbers come out (he sets his alarm to read them ). A couple time he saw somethign he didn't like and e-mailed me, of course I was a sleep , like normal people, so he sent a follow up askign me why I didn't respond.

On the other hand, our IT dept is in Toronto, my time zone is 1 hour ahead, and I get in the office between 6 and 7 am most mornings, If I notice the system has crashed (and I'm 1-4 hours ahead of the rest of the country) I think nothing of paging the IT people to get in the office and fix it. Maybe it was me who paged you this morning Shakey ( Remember too if I don't call, then it's several hours before they get in the office for Montreal/ Toronto/ New York/ Buffalo/ Chicago and by me calling I let them get a head start

My job doesn't require me to be on call but I did work yesterday and today. I went to work at 5:30 AM on both days. The only reason I worked yesterday was it was double time $$$! I worked 5 hours yesterday and 4 this morning. I normally don't go to work til 8:00 and it was quite a shock to the sytem getting up that early and going to work!
