My favorite movie of the 80's is Xanadu.
In my opinion, the key to ejoying it is to look on it as a musical or music video--the story line exists to provide occasions for song and dance.
I have to admit I love the movie ! A bit cheesy but the music is great ! I have it on tape and own the soundtrack on CD.
Of course, I am a HUGE ONJ fan !

Wow. Xanadu. That's a rough one.
I was a big ELO fan around this time and I got word that the next ELO album was going to be named Xanadu. The word held no meaning for me, and I checked the racks every time I went to my then favorite record store. Then I heard it was going to be the soundtrack to a movie. I was convinced that it was going to be a blockbuster and talked a group of friends into seeing a matinee on the day it opened.
Two minutes into the movie, I knew I was in trouble. I had dragged the guys to a ROLLER DISCO MOVIE!!!! Every face in my row turned to look at me with eyes that shot daggers. I began imagining myself in a shallow grave out behind the theater. Luckily a movie we REALLY wanted to see was starting down the hall only a few minutes after Xanadu revealed itself to be something that no self respecting Rush fan would be caught dead watching. We snuck out of the largely empty theater and counted ourselves lucky to not have been seen.
Then I grew up and had a daughter who LOVES those kind of movies. Grease, Xanadu, Footloose, she loved them all and would sit on the couch an write down the words to all the songs in a notebook. Aah, the fond memories that I got to re-live with her.
I still like the music, but in a closet-fan kind of way. ;-)
Yeah, at the time I really liked the movie. Had a lot going for it - ELO, Michael Beck (fresh from The Warriors), Gene Kelly, but mostly Olivia Newton-John (I had a huge thing for her back in the 80s).

This USED to big one of my top 10 but at work lately they've been stuck on a couple of movie soundtracks on the overhead sound system and if i hear "Suddenly" one more time i'm gonna freak. Of course, how could you not like a rollerskating movie?? A close second would have to be that Linda Blair rollerskating movie and NO there is no pea soup in this one.:thumb:

I was such a big fan of Olivia, so naturally, I loved the movie! I still have the soundtrack to it. Looking back, yeah it was a bit cheesy, but OMG...how can you not love the music? LOL Yes, and I feel the same way about the Linda Blair movie.."Rollerboogie"..I just bought it on DVD at Best Buy a few months ago.

Oh Tempest, look what I found?
I have been a fan of this movie since I was little. The movie is so bad it's good. The music is wonderful with ONJ and ELO.
And now there is a Broadway musical of the movie, which I've heard great reviews of it. I've seen snippets of the show and it is basically spoofing the movie, but in a very respectful way. I'm so wanting to see it.
My favorite song from the soundtrack is "Suspended in Time."
Can't say I've ever been tempted to see it, but the title song is a classic. Horray for Olivia Newton John and ELO!

It was the perfect movie for that time (1980) as the decade was just starting and no one was really sure which way music was about to go. Besides, Olivia with pink ribbons in her hair, in leg warmers, a really short skirt and rollerskates? How could you go wrong.:biglick::lol:
