Boy George Arrested on Drug Charge
Oct 7, 4:09 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Boy George was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs and making a fake police report after calling 911 early Friday, police said.

The British singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, claimed his home had been burglarized around 3 a.m. Friday, said Detective Kevin Czartoryski, a police spokesman.

Officers arrived at O'Dowd's Manhattan apartment and discovered a small amount of cocaine next to a computer, police said. Police were continuing to investigate.

Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office, said O'Dowd was still in police custody and was awaiting arraigment Friday evening. He was yet to be charged.

A former spokesman for O'Dowd's autobiographical musical "Taboo," which closed last year, said he did not know whether the singer had a spokesman or lawyer.

It is not the first time Boy George has had problems with drugs.

In 1986, the singer was convicted for heroin possession in England. Two of his friends overdosed in the incident and O'Dowd was forced into a rehabilitation program. The conviction led to the disintegration of his group, Culture Club, one year later.

Boy George, famous for his androgynous persona, and Culture Club had hits including "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?".

I posted this on my blog:

Do You Really Want to Snort Me?

Gender-bending 80s drag Diva “Boy” George O’Dowd was arrested yesterday in New York City after authorities investigating a 911 call from the singer’s Manhattan apartment discovered a small amount of cocaine located next to a computer. O’Dowd, forty-six, has been no stranger to the drug scene. A recovering heroin addict, he had apparently beaten the demons that had practically derailed his once super-successful career. An icon of the Era of Excess, the pop star’s exotic looks, amazing singing voice and electrifying personality made him one of the most famous faces of the 80s, right along fellow superstars Michael Jackson and Madonna. With his band Culture Club, the singer racked up an impressive list of hits, including the international Number Ones “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”, “The Crying Game” and “Karma Chameleon”, and Boy George mania swept the world. He succumbed to the lure of drugs, however, and by the time he was arrested in the UK on heroin charges in 1986, he looked like a concentration camp survivor, with his head shaved due to his conversion to the Hare Krishna religion and an emaciated body. Two close friends and companions of the singer died of heroin overdoses, one in the star’s London home. More recently, O’Dowd had been starring in a play, Taboo, a hit in the UK, but a dud on Broadway. It’s hard to imagine Boy would fall back into the same destructive behaviors responsible for practically ending his career… not to mention his very life. It looks like that karma chameleon’s colors have changed from red, gold and green, to black and white stripes…

Ehh..

I don't believe George did this to himself or that he's that stupid.
Either way he'll pull through it as he always has.
Good or bad, publicity is publicity.
