View Full Version : Horror of Horrors...WinMX is dead!
I guess it had to happen sooner or later, I was concerned last week that I couldn't get a connection to the WinMX P2P network - and a quick news search revealed why.
WinMX has now become a pay P2P service, and consequently I'm looking for a new P2P tool to migrate across to. Any suggestions?
Not too bothered about the available multimedia, just as long as there is a good selection of 80's and hard-to-find stuff. :thumb:
Both WinMX and eDonkey got shut down last week by the RIAA - WinMX Shuts Down After RIAA Threat (http://www.betanews.com/article/WinMX_Shuts_Down_After_RIAA_Threat/1127405971).
Glenn Gulia 9-25-05, 02:57 PM WinMx still lives :yesnod: http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=925
Damn :( I wondered why I couldn't connect. As Chasey said, if anyone knows of a good P2P program without lots of bugs and spyware inherent in the software, that can help find 80's music I would most certainly appreciate to get a hint ;)
I know one. Check your reps.

Ditto to that. :yesnod:
I've been using Limewire for a while now. No problems so far, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before it gets shut down too. Enjoy it while you can :thumb:

I love Limewire! I've never had any problems with it and I find everything I'm looking for :thumb:
Hurricane 9-26-05, 11:55 AM Rejoice, for I have the answer! :D
There is a neat program called Trustyfiles. It can search AND download from multiple P2P networks. Emule and Overnet were added to this program recently. It works really well. As an alternative, you can also try the new Morpheus, which searches Gnutella and Neonet, but can only download from one of those networks per file. Anyway, as I said, rejoice! :D

Thanks for all your suggestions guys! I'll be trying them all out, but to start with I'll think I'll give Trustyfiles a bash first, simply because of it's coverage.
Will let you know how I get on with it all :thumb:
Wow, Trustyfiles does indeed kick some serious butt....I'm impressed! : :spin:
smoothupinya 9-26-05, 06:25 PM I use Morpheus and have had no problems.............:thumb:
Caligula 9-26-05, 06:35 PM I did ntice over the last couple of weeks, when you go to download a song in Limewire, you get some messages that says " Limewire cannot find a license to the song" and ten a notice about the Gnulla network not being able to control yada yada yada, respect your local copyright laws, you just press continue and ignore that nonsense and start downloading music
Surely you have seen me mentioning this p2p before and I will do it again. DC++ !!
The problem for most ppl with dc is that when they use a p2p program they don't want to make a fuss after installing. 2 mouseclicks and it should be up and running. DC takes work and patience, but when you have it running it is the best there is.
Hubs from all over the world. Some are general, some have a theme.
So if you have the patience and you have some stuff that you can share, a whole new world will open for you. If anyone wants help with it you can contact me and I will help you set it up.
I use is now for a year and a half and downloaded over 1 TB...

galaga-girl 9-28-05, 06:03 AM OK guys, I NEED to know the name of the new program you guys are using. I can't believe my WinMX is gone :(
:shh: :D
Downloading is legal in the Netherlands, only uploading is not allowed... I never upload anything honest I don't :mwaha:
Well guys, I'm still ploughing through replacements. TrustyFiles is good, and so is EDonkey, however I'm finding that just because you get results it doesn't mean you can download the file.
Availability seems to play a big part in all this, and also EDonkey seems to not like my Zone Labs Security Suite.
So I'm still looking. Next up is Limewire and Morpheus....
Why is everyboday deaf and / or blind??? DC is even better than winmx, so why go through all the troule of testing those sh*t programs like edonky?????
Read and get the program here : http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
To give you a small example of how good it works: day before yesterday I wanted to watch sleepy hollow, I didn't own it. looked for it at dc, found it and 4 hours later I was watching it....
Ugly Kid Jeff72 10-01-05, 07:29 AM I've went through them all from time to time, But i always and still do use BearShare! Lots of obscure songs that i've found there.

As you put it so forcefully Walvis, I'll give DC a trial tomorrow! :thumb:
Hurricane 10-02-05, 02:47 AM OK. Here is my rant on DC.
There is absolutely no blocklist available for DC. Leave DC open, and you're asking for trouble. You can use Peerguardian with DC, but that takes a chunk out of your CPU cycles. Also, it is a bit complicated. Trustyfiles has a blocklist manager right in the Preferences menu. Just click the Update button to download the latest blocklist, then click OK or Apply to put it into effect. I usually restart Trustyfiles after that. In any event, Trustyfiles is way easier and has a blocklist manager.
'Nuff said. :D
Ok, I don't know about wich program you are talking, but DC doesn't work with blocklists or stuff like that.
What do you mean with, 'leave dc open and you're asking for trouble'??? I run it 24/7 and never have any problems. You can limit your up and download stream. You open a certain amount of up and /or download slots. So you pick how much of your bandwith will be used.
I think you didn't use dc, but something else, because you mention problems and features that are non excistence with dc.
@Chasey:I hope it works allrigh for you and if you need help just let me know.
*one member on my own forum has started using dc since a few months ago and he says a whole new world has opened for him.... 'Nuff said :D
Hurricane 10-02-05, 11:14 PM Walvis, I meant trouble as in the RIAA or MPAA busting down your door. lol
A blocklist is used to filter out those agencies. DC doesn't use one, you see, so as I said, leave DC open, and you're asking for trouble. Trustyfiles has a blocklist manager that can be updated from Bluetack, and it's all done from inside the program. It's up to the user to update it, but that's as simple as opening Preferences, clicking Blocklist, clicking Update, clicking the OK in the Blocklist Updated dialog box, then clicking OK in the Preferences box. I would then restart Trustyfiles and make sure that the blocklist is updated, as it tells you when it was last updated. Most of the other P2P progs can use blocklists, but you have to download a list manually, convert it to the format of your P2P, then import it. It sounds shorter to do that, but it takes a bit longer, not to mention that it's more tedius to do it that way. I'm sure DC is a good prog, and yes, I have used it myself, but it still can't connect to all of the P2P networks out there, and there's no built-in blocklist manager. I myself found DC to be way too tedius to use. To each his/her own, I always say. I'm just tossing my 2 cents in. :D
Is a block list not only use full when it is about us users? DC is 99% european users so the chance that you meet someone from the RIAA or MPAA is realy small. Thank god for our governement, got to love those guys for having no problems with downloading.. :)
Hurricane 10-03-05, 04:36 AM That's just it. Who said that DC is strictly European? :)
If we use that prog, we are toast. I'm from the USA, and as such, subject to those fartknockers. :( I need to use a prog that shields me at least somewhat from those greedy assclowns. Trustyfiles is by far the best for that.
As for thinking that you're safe in Europe, think again. The RIAA and MPAA are able to get foreign P2P users as well, thanks to their collaboration with foreign governments. Please be careful. From one P2P fan to another, please use a prog that shields you at least somewhat. I'm all for sharing what I have as well as downloading from others who have what I want. No money is exchanged, so IMHO, it is not a crime. However, the RIAA and MPAA just can't handle it. lol
Take care, and thanks for your honest post. Seriously, give Trustyfiles a try if you haven't already. Best of luck to you. :D
Tell you one major thing I dislike about half of these programs is the requirement for you to actually choose a server to connect to.
I mean, WinMX just connected straight away and, boom, thousands of results! And they actually downloaded EVERY time, not just sit there endlessly trying to connect and never actually download. Maybe it's my firewall, but in all honesty I can't be arsed to sort it out.
Not only that, but when I try to connect, I've gotto sift through thousands of servers and connect....'USA Fun Server'...'UK Nerds Server'...'French C'est Bon Server'.....etc, etc. Talk about tedious! :talkhand:
Thus far, all things considered I've found nothing that beats WinMX. I might just wait until it's resurrected, because I really can't be bothered with the others. :dammit:
Hurricane 10-03-05, 07:23 PM Yup. All those servers. I can only guess that you're referring to an eDonkey client, Chasey? :D
Yes. It's very tedius. I used an eDonkey client before. I discovered the best way to get around that is to sort the list by the number of files available from most to least, then connect to the one with the most files. I would then set the search parameters to Global. Needless to say, that got old real fast. :irked:
WimMX was very easy to use. I didn't have a great experience with it, but it was very easy to use and did provide lots of results during my searches. I'm still curious why they shut down. Others haven't had to, but I can't think too much about that, as my brain would short circuit. :dammit:
