View Full Version : Is it possible to post too much?
Caligula 9-24-05, 03:31 PM I'm curious, I was on another site and I saw members complaining about over posting by some members, I thought how weird, doesn't a site want as many posts as possible?.
I'm just curious to how you feel about if it's possible to over post?,
the way I see it, is it's great if you can post as much as possible as long as you make your posts interesting or relevant for a majority of members. Posting a hundred times a day just to hear yourself, or to win a prize or on topics no one has a clue or interest in might be overdoing it, but on the other hand you can just ignore the poster.
Just curious to how you feel, I was just surprised to see another website having long time members complaining
smoothupinya 9-24-05, 03:45 PM o.k................now that is your new thread for the week and you only get 4 more posts in the next 72 hour period. bbbbwwwwaaaaahhhhhhhhh:rollin:
Sounds like a board I would not want to be apart of. I don't know about you, but why hang out on a forum when all you can do is read. If they have a rule on post #'s there must not be many topics that stay active.
I was a part of a board where people complained about that too. If someone always had interesting posts, I say they should post as often as they like.:p
Metalfan83 9-24-05, 04:24 PM Chances are, it's usually those who are new to these "boards" that are whining about how much somebody posts. I mean, come on, really. :irked:
I used to be part of an anime board that was like that. People can be so lame.
Miss INXS 9-24-05, 04:53 PM the way I see it, is it's great if you can post as much as possible as long as you make your posts interesting or relevant for a majority of members.
That's EXACTLY how I see it too, Cali! :thumb: As long as posts are interesting & allow others to participate and have fun -or be serious but interesting discussions - then it's all good in my book. http://www.80sxchange.com/ubb/wink.gif
KimJoy69 9-24-05, 04:58 PM  Lemme guess, Cal... were you maybe on a Prog Metal band's board?? Or something equally intellectual? :D
...I'm just teasin'... :mwaha:
But I think you may have figured out the answer to your own question right here:
as long as you make your posts interesting or relevant for a majority of members. Posting a hundred times a day just to hear yourself, or to win a prize or on topics no one has a clue or interest in might be overdoing it, but on the other hand you can just ignore the poster.
You also pointed one of my most FAAAAVORITE features on the xchange, although I don't even have to use it anymore. ;)
"IGNORE USER" :talkhand:
I used to have several posters on Ignore, because I just couldn't take looking at their mindless drivel and self promotion any longer. :barf: They liked to see/listen to themselves talk. They'd post in places they knew NOTHING about nor had any interest in, just to post.
Glad that's over! :D
Yes, people can post too much. There's a board I started at that I maybe go to once or twice a week now. When all you have to say is " :) " or " :D ", then you're just wasting space and not adding anything to enhance the topic. When the topic is "What should I have for lunch today?" and you make that thread about 4 times a week, someone ought to be able to tell you that no one gives a shite and find something interesting to discuss or STFU. I swear to all that's holy, one person started a thread titled "I Farted" and the body of the post was a smiley holding it's nose. Maybe it would be funny on occasion, but daily it just turns into something that's boring and overdone and it makes people with something genuine to say decide to go elsewhere, because they tired of trying to sort through topics to find one that's interesting.
If you have well wishes or advice or a similar experience or an honest-to-goodness opinion on something, I don't think your posts should be limited. Of course, there should be mods and admins who tell you that a lot of fluff is not going to be acceptable. We have some fluff here, but it's not so much that it annoys anyone. Usually it's fun and it's contained in one or two threads, not overrunning the boards.
jillybean 9-24-05, 06:26 PM I used to be on a board that had the option of changing your title once you hit a certain amount of posts so many people would post the stupidest things just to get their post count up. There was even a never-ending thread that went on for 30 some pages about absolutely NOTHING. It was just a reason to get post count up and it drove the most of us crazy.
The best thing about this board (well one of many) is the Ignore button, which Kimmy suggested. I love that option and wish that it was available EVERYWHERE. Post something that has meaning, not just stupid shite that no one cares about. On that board I was on, it took me forever to get to the post count because I only post if I have something meaningful to say or that has to do with the topic at-hand.

Thats pretty much how I see it. Although, I can't figure out how someone can join a board and have over 1000 posts in less then a week. They must live online.
There's a huge difference between an attention whore & a post whore. I am more like a post whore :D It's the attention whores that I can't stand ;)

Like her PG.................?

No, more like these people.
The thing is, if you are going to start a topic every five minutes while you are online, and the vast, VAST majority of the people posting have no clue what you are talking about on a constant basis, you ARENT contributing to anything, you are just eating bandwidth.
Either way, be PRODUCTIVE when you post, thats all I can ask.
I'm hoping beyond all that is good that those boys have been photoshopped!!! I'm sorry, but I find that utterly revolting!!
As for reaching 1000 posts in a week. It took me for friggin ever to make 1000 posts here. I think it's easier now because there ARE so many different threads to post to. Not like when we really had to work for our post count. LOL
Ugly Kid Jeff72 9-25-05, 07:30 PM Well! I don't have any thing to worry about, Huh...! It has taken me three years to get past 1000. Here's to 2000 in three more years!

Is that Roem on the right?
Cal! Don't make me smack your arse! Roem is in the middle.

That was awful, I know.
:* for Roemy's feelings. :)
Glenn Gulia 9-25-05, 08:10 PM Is that Roem on the right?
The one with da door knocker in his nose
JeannieT 9-25-05, 09:11 PM A lot of people become addicted to web-sites and cannot help themselves, so they post a lot. I think people should remember that just because you like to read the posts, doesn't mean you have to reply to every one. There is nothing worse than wearing out your welcome.
Like Cal said, if it's reasonably interesting and not mindless blather posted just to drive up post counts, then no, I don't think one can post too much!
stlkev70 9-25-05, 10:55 PM I think I am in agreement with the rest of you, if you have something interesting to say then say it! If you are on just to get your post count up or to hear yourself talk then you don't have anything interesting to talk about!
It is not a popularity contest but you can tell who is popular with out that person having a high post count! If people like what you have to say then they will respond to it even if you only post once a day or once a week.
Blurs&Stains 9-26-05, 02:40 AM What's the point of Message boards if not for posting, for discussion, for sharing ideas & thoughts & photos like those over-tattoed, over-pierced lads????? If the topics been discussed b4 & u don't care for it anymore, then u just go find another post that interests u. :D

EXACTLY!!! You'll find a LOT of threads that I don't appear anywhere in. Why? Cause I'm not interested in it or I don't know enough about the topic, and therefore don't post in them.
Like the old saying goes "Better to shut up and look smart then to open up and look stupid!"
Prefab Sprouter 9-26-05, 08:19 AM Posting for postings sake is wrong. One of the best features of a board like this is that is a perfect forum to show how hundreds of diverse individuals from all walks of life and dozens of nations can come and share information, discuss topics and enjoy each others company. And apart from some hiccups, that is the way it has stayed.

Thats what I thought a message board was for. I thought it was people to meet, share laughs with, have fun , and be silly. I didn't realize it was for serious stuff. I thought we were suppose to join in and have fun. I'm not sure what they consider overposting though. I have answered a few threads at a time. Is that over posting? Maybe I'm over posting now? Oh crap, I better get off.....
fungirl3 9-26-05, 01:22 PM I agree with you guys, the Xchange is the only place I post and I love it here. I think it's awesome that there are so many differences of opinions but everyone gets along and tries to see other's points of view. :)

Oh no... if you dont post and ask then you will never learn about the topic. I actually rather look stupid in this virtual scenerio than in real life when someone asks me about the same topic. :D
:) Well I dont think there is such a thing as overposting at the 80sxchange... what we actually need here at the 80sxchage is encorage posting. Especially from the new members. We don't want to discorage them.
If they want to respond or post on any thread they should (don't feel discorage)... even if it doesnt make sense or you don't know the answer. Yeah this is a place like, frothy latte, said to have fun and be silly posting.
With that in mind, please get you hands ready and start posting!
Christine 9-27-05, 09:54 AM I think that as long as your posts have SOME value, then you can really not post too much. If every post is just a :) as a reply to another's post...then that's a little worthless. I love this board and reading what everyone has to say!
Steve Savicki 9-27-05, 03:56 PM I'm curious, I was on another site and I saw members complaining about over posting by some members, I thought how weird, doesn't a site want as many posts as possible?
Depends on if it's Spam or not. When people Spam, it adds onto the cost of the board's bandwidth.
It seems that this site has the grounds covered for that, but if the board doesn't find banner ads, other methods of advertising or another way to cover the bandwidth costs, then guess where the money comes out of... the owner's own pocket!
Whether a post is spam or not really doesnt matter in the long run. What's worse, somebody who posts a thread advertising Boner Pills, or someobdy coming into a thread and posting eight or nine times without adding to the conversation? The Boner Pills will be deleted, but if we delete the assinine replies, we hear the cries of CENSORSHIP!
There is a VAST difference.
KimJoy69 9-27-05, 06:09 PM or someobdy coming into a thread and posting eight or nine times without adding to the conversation? Funny how this thread pops up right after a thread where we have this exact thing going on.
If it wasn't so entertaining, I'd hit that lovely ol Ignore button. :mwaha:

Nothing worse then having to scan over 10 posts of conversations between two or three people that have nothing to do with the topic.
Too bad another board I go to does not have the same option. :irked:
