View Full Version : Laptop Help
I am in the market for a new laptop, but I'm not sure how to choose a good one. I don't want to spend more than about $1700 for it. And, really, if I can get a good one for less, that would make me happier. What I'm asking is if anyone can suggest a good laptop within my price range. Thanks!
I would say that a lot depends on what you want to do with it?
If it is for work, then I think that the IBM Thinkpad (http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/finders?pg=nbfinder&N=200004&trac=1T10FN01A) is the way to go.
If it is for fun, then I would just go to some of the sites (Dell, Gateway, etc...) and use the build your own function and try to get what you want in the price range that you are comfortable with.
I have a thinkpad right now. It's a few years old. It's been a good computer so far, but it's just not working for me now.
Claybricks 9-23-05, 09:24 PM My brother has always purchased IBM Thinkpads. He bought a DELL top of the line laptop last year and was very disappointed. He remarked that the support at IBM is superior to DELL and the quality of the IBM machine is better in his opinion. Also, I believe IBM still offers refurbished Laptops at a reduced cost. My brother purchased a refurbished IBM laptop around 1997 and he said it looked brand new.

Now mind you, I don't use laptops unless I HAVE to, but my husband says it's the best one he's ever owned. It's reeeeally thin :p

Okay...it's more a shleptop than a laptop...but surely unique. ;)
A friend of mine is using a HP Pavillion (don't ask me for the exact model, he paid around 1200€ for that thingy) and is quite satisfied - well, the onbard graphic unit doesn't do well for games with complex graphics, but overall, it's a good machine (he says).
Wavey...you couldn't possibly think......well.....maybe you could
I'll keep looking. LMAO!!!

I got me an Compaq Armada that I purchsed through ebay for undrer $400. I don't do a lot online so it works great for what little surfing and bookwork I do. Plus I can watch DVDs at work. I am happy with it. :) It came in real handy when my desktop to a dump.
Your best bet is to buy new. Unless you only want a laptop just to have one.
jillybean 9-24-05, 06:34 PM I have a Macintosh iBook and I LOOOOOOOOVE it. It's so light-weight and I can take it anywhere. I'm so glad the Computer Tech. girl told me to go with this vs. a regular Mac. I couldn't be more pleased. Works great for 'net and I use it for graphic design as well.
wavemaster 9-24-05, 11:21 PM jen,
but don't be too disappointed, since todays price for the SX 64 will surely exceed your 1700$-limit. ;)

If I had known that she was after something top of the line like that, I would have suggested a Kaypro...
