View Full Version : New 80's station in Anchorage, Alaska
Dave Taylor 2-09-00, 07:06 AM We have a brand new 80's only station here in Anchorage, Alaska. It's KRPM "Pure Retro 96.3". KRPM has been on the air since Christmas Day of '99 and we hope to be broadcasting on the web soon as well. Dave Taylor DJ Pure Retro 96.3
Sal Collaziano 2-09-00, 03:05 PM What's up, Dave Taylor? Welcome to the community! Do you have anything to do with this station you are talking about? Do they have a website? Lemme know.. It sounds really cool.. I cant wait until we get an 80s station here in New York!!
Dave Taylor 2-09-00, 04:31 PM Yes, Sal, I do work for the company that owns this station. I am on the air 7p til midnight weekdays. I'm actually an engineer but I've had alot of on-air experience (20 yrs worth) and had originally started an evening 80's show called "The 80's at 8" on another local station about 3 years ago. We hope to be on the web perhaps by this summer. Dave
Sal Collaziano 2-10-00, 06:31 PM Wow. Very cool! We do have some people in the 'right' positions here for sure.. hehe :) How did the "80's at 8" deal work? Was it successful?
Dave Taylor 2-12-00, 06:08 PM Yes, the 80's at 8 was sucessful and it's still on the air on that station just with another DJ. Also two other stations in town (one of them ours) airs an 80's retro lunch. We, of course, air 80's music 24 hours a day:) Dave
Wow Dave I hope our area takes the hint - we only get 80s music out of our best radio station Fridays at lunch. Our other stations play oldies, talk, soft celine & michael bolton, and dance. I WANT and 80s station here!!!! : )
Dave Taylor 2-12-00, 10:35 PM I hope you get one where you are at. Overall, according to Arbitron surveys (the Nielson's of Radio), 80's format stations have flopped in the US so my company is keeping a close watch to see if KRPM will be a hit here in Alaska and whether or not it will make money. Money is the bottom line with any commercial broadcaster in any country. Dave
Sal Collaziano 2-13-00, 08:40 AM Damn, Dave.. When did the Arbitron company report 80's stations flopped in the US? That's a crappy thing to hear... :(
Dave Taylor 2-14-00, 08:34 AM The results were from Arbitron surveys as recently as the Spring and Fall books of 1999.
Sal Collaziano 2-15-00, 05:01 PM How do they get the ratings anyway? I'm curious..
Blaziegirl 2-16-00, 09:29 PM I remember years ago participating in an Arbitron survey, they paid me a $1.00 for each one, I don't think it had anything to do with music :O)
Hey Dave if its possible give this board a plug on your station. You never know we may get swamped with 80s fans from Alaska
Dave Taylor 2-19-00, 01:39 PM Sorry I haven't checked back here in a few days. I have given this site a plug on the air and given out the URL.
I may get some local hits pretty soon.
Dave
Blaziegirl 2-20-00, 11:55 AM That's great news, Dave, Thanks. We're pretty good friends with a radio DJ here, I'm going to try an get her to join our board. She's pretty busy with two jobs though, hopefully she can find the time. Michael Stanley works for the same station maybe we can get him to join also
Thanks so much for the plug Dave Does your station have an uplink to listen over the net? You should submit it to Sal's 80s sites so he can stick it out front and we can listen to you
Dave Taylor 2-22-00, 03:59 PM Unfortunately we are not on the web yet. We hope to be by this spring with audio streaming as well. Then you can hear us all over the world. KRPM is very music intensive.
Here are some of the 80's artists we play:
Duran Duran
INXS
Men At Work
The Fixx
Dead or Alive
David Bowie
The Cure
Simple Minds
Men Without Hats
Modern English

Romeo Void
Spandau Ballet
After the Fire
Falco
And many many more.....
Excellent playlist
I've heard 2 all 80s radio stations. There was one out of Louisville, Ky, 105.9 WRVR, which is no longer an all 80s format station, and 103.1 WXXY out Chicago, Il, which has been around since late this past summer. I listen to the latter and enjoy it quite a bit. They are on the web and you can give them a listen at 103.1 WXXY Chicago (http://www.wxxy.com) I wonder if 80s radio has been considered a flop due to WRVR's failure. I've had an 80s Yahoo! club for 6 months with members from across the U.S.& this the first I've heard of any other all 80s format stations, so I can't imagine that there have been enough stations take up this music much less fail after doing so, to say that all 80s radio is a failure. What could orbitrons criteria be ???
Cool I just tuned in and they are playing the replacements. They have rubicscubes on their site too which makes them way cool
Thanks for the link mkbat - I just edited so the url you gave could be a live link
Cheers
Dave, I live here in Anchorage and have been listening to 96.3 since it first came on the radio. The only hang up I have is the fact it seems that the play list is somewhat short. You end up hearing the same songs quite a few times in one day. The songs you do play are great songs and bring back some great memories of that wild decade.
Sal Collaziano 1-08-01, 06:52 PM Hi, Ed89! Sorry, but this is our old forum and not many people visit here anymore. We've got a new forum that's doing great! Go to www.80sxchange.com and click on the link towards the top left called "Public Message Forums". That's where we're all hanging out these days.. If you need more help finding it, reply here. :) Hope to see you soon!
