View Full Version : Death - Chuck Schuldiner
Sal Collaziano 11-22-99, 03:01 PM Are there any other bands that come close? Everything else in the Death Metal catagory is nothing in my opinion. Every time I make the mistake of buying an album I think I can add to my collection I am sadly mistaken. Death is not a band of screaming and yelling. He speaks SERIOUS wisdom through a very creepy and odd voice. It's not screaming like other Death Metal bands have. It's more "a way" of doing what he does that makes him so great. Are there any other bands that even come close? I don't wanna hear some idiot screaming his lungs out about nonsense. I wanna hear the opinions of somebody who is angry at the way things are and for good reason. The Guilty One Innocent she now cries A life of hell Better off to die Born without eyes, hands And half a brain... Being born addicted To cocaine... To some these are words of insanity. To me these are words of anger towards people who use drugs during pregnancy... This is Chuck Schuldiner...
Death may be cited for creating DEath metal but chuck S. is about the the mosted disliked person in the metal world.I have played and worked shows Death has done and what a jerk. I recall him having a fit in Minneaplois in 89 when they were opening act for Dark Angel. He wanted a drum riser, fog all the lights and sound and acked like a spolied kid. Death had been getting smoked every night by D.A. and wernt getting a croud responce like them. He's lucky Gene Hoglan Drummer of D.A. diddent break his neck. So death left the tour and Obituary filled in the rest of the dates, who in time done way better at the box office and at record sales than Death. The early death was lame and the new stuff is a new super group each outing. Not much love out there Chuck, not even by hi band members. You want some death metal with intelagnce check out Carcass ,Tiamot,or VoiVod.The real genious of metal is Devin Townsend, Dont know about him find out.And check out Today is the day, They rewrote the book on death metal. Spitual Healing Was a joke of a record.Bad art work too. Only redeming factor was James Murphy leed work.
Sal Collaziano 11-23-99, 06:04 AM Well, regardless of personality, I like Chuck Schuldiners work.. Wasn't Gene Hoglan in Death after that? Is Devin Townsend Obituary? I like Obituary too but I didn't find the lyrics as intellectual and the voice sounded too synthesised... Chuck seems to sound alittle more natural. But, to each his own. Opinions are legal.
Devin Townsend is a highly sought after writer, prouducer. He ahs been asked to join many metal projectd but hasent the desire or time. His most comercial meterial is Straping Young Lads. He was also the singer for Steve Vie's band in 93'I beleave it was called Sex and Religion. Run a web serch on him. You may be pleasently suprised. Yes Hoglan was in Death for one cd He also worked for Townsend. Along with members of Fear Factory and Jason Newstead. Judas Preast wanted him to replace Halford but he wouldent waiste his time. The dude is a genious check him out. No Chuck S. is a very compitent musician but has rep of being a jerk.I think his lastest cd is by far the best he's done, there is a new atemp at vocals for him. I also read someware the name Death has been droped ( dont recall the new name) and he also has a brain tumer. I do wish him luck with his health.
Sal Collaziano 11-24-99, 06:12 AM I haven't heard that Death has been dropped. He does have a side project called "Control Denied" - maybe that gave people the impression that Death was gone... Chuck Schuldiner has a brain tumor? I would like to hear more about that. I will have to go searching... Thanks for the info... And yes, I have heard his personality is sometimes lacking...
Sal Collaziano 11-24-99, 06:47 AM I just tried the new search engine thing (on our front page at the bottom) and it works pretty well. I searched for "Chuck Schuldiner" and it gave me alot of sites. It seems the brain tumor thing is under control.. Hopefully, anyways...
Skyklad 11-24-99, 06:49 AM Yes..Chucks bout with the brain tumor is under control..much to the relief of Death fans around the world. When I first heard about it (Chuck sent out a letter over the net) I was afraid for him but breathed a sigh of releif when he sent another letter saying it's all ok now.
Sal Collaziano 11-24-99, 08:18 AM See? If I had this site up earlier, I'd have known about that letter - because you might have been here. Hmm.. Is there a copy of that letter anywhere? I'd like to see something written by him besides lyrics...
Sal Collaziano 11-24-99, 08:18 AM P.S. I have a feeling this will change his music alittle bit.. And I bet for the better..
"CONTROL DENIED guitarist Chuck Schuldiner has successfully undergone life-saving surgery performed January 19 at NYU Medical Center. The experimental procedure, requiring five specialists, began at 7:30am and ended shortly before 4:30pm. The procedure to remove Schuldiner's cancerous brain-stem tumor was nearly halted by the medical facilities administrative board as costs for the uninsured musician are expected to be near $100,000. A late hour agreement, however, was reached and the operation was allowed to proceed. The Schuldiner family has been overwhelmed with fan and media support since news of the musicians need for the surgery broke on January 14 in a report carried by MTV. Phone calls and email have been received from around the world; letters offering verbal and financial support. Trust funds have been set up in several countries to assistance the family's expenses. Schuldiner, regarded as the forefather of death metal, is reported to be in good health. As of press time, he is awake and fully alert. A statement from Schuldiner is expected soon. Those who wish to send money, cards, or other items can write to Schuldiner's mother, Jane Schuldiner, at 609 E. Citrus St., Altamont Springs, Florida, 32701."
Sal Collaziano 1-24-00, 03:36 PM Wow. That's great to hear he's okay. It's kinda funny, in a way, how they didn't use his main bands name; Death. heh He IS the band leader and vocalist! I guess it just wouldn't be right, though. hehe Wow. I'm glad he's okay!
I'm not to familiar with his music but it is great to hear when someone beats a debilitating disease.
Sal Collaziano 1-25-00, 02:35 PM His music is very interesting, to say the least. The lyrics are usually very sensible and the music is very psychotic and scary! Some of it sounds like it belongs in a scary movie... It definatly gets my adreneline going!
Psychotic and Scary!? Oh man my two favorite words...LOL. I will definitely look for some of his music.
Sal Collaziano 1-26-00, 04:38 PM King Diamond is alittle psychotic and scary as well.. You know about HIM, right? Otherwise: Death - For pure, hard, crazy death metal, try their first three albums: "Scream Bloody Gore" is alittle immature. "Leprosy" begins their evolution but still lacking some intelligence "Spiritual Healing" continues their evolution including more intellectual lyrics. Their next three albums: "Human" is a huge change. The entire band sounds professional and the lyrics took thought. "Individual Thought Patterns" is the same as above. "Symbolic" is the same as above but it seems, to me, that they were running out of intellectual ideas. Their latest album, "Sound of Perseverance", I never bought. Chuck Schuldiner decided to use a higher pitch voice and I don't like that. However, if I ever see the cassette, I will buy it to complete my collection. A respect I will never give to Metallica.
Yeah I got a couple of King Diamonds cd's. Sounds to me I might like his music a lot...Thanks Sal Uh Oh! The "M" word has popped up again. :O
Sal Collaziano 1-27-00, 01:11 PM Yeah. The "M" word. Sorry. I should make that a curse word that gets blocked out automatically. hehe Well, not everyone feels the way we do. To each his/her own. :)
"From Chuck Schuldiner: "Metallic greetings! As usual, the "rumor factory" has been hard at work. The most radical one had to be that I was dead. It should not have surprised me, but it somehow kind of did. I hate to disappoint those odd people with such an "overactive imagination" but I am alive and letting the metal flow! I just finished writing the last song for the new CONTROL DENIED album, which is still untitled. Yes, it will crush, 100% trend free. The responses to The Fragile Art of Existence has been really awesome. Thank you for embracing it! I also want to thank everyone around the world for the incredible support you have shown me. I read the emails and the letters and appreciate your kind words and honesty. I am sorry for the delay on seeing a new press release, but I wanted to wait for the right time and circumstances. I'm settling down here in Florida, feeling good and looking forward to getting busy again with the new record and tour to thank all my metal brothers and sisters in person with some new metal. I will make sure to keep you informed in the very near future through the Nuclear Blast website and other legitimate avenues of information. Remember to always "support music, not rumors" and, of course - Let The Metal Flow! Shazaamm! Chuck." In related news, a tribute concert in support of Chuck is being orchestrated in his home town of Tampa, Florida, with the like of CRIMSON GLORY, KAMELOT and MALEVOLENT CREATION participating."
