View Full Version : Your favourite "style" of metal?
Skyklad 11-29-99, 07:01 AM What would you all consider to be your favourite style of metal? There's so many different classifications these days that I get confused! Back in the day it was mainly all classified as HEAVY METAL..nowadays we've got Power metal, Prog, Death metal, Black metal, Thrash, Gothic, Rap metal (unfortunately), White metal..and probably many more that I don't know about! LOL I, myself, really don't have a favourite as I like to enjoy what each "style" has to offer. I guess the closest to a favourite would be Thrash...the "Bay Area" sound is awesome. I could not imagine only listening to one style but many people do..and they are quick to put the others down. I think it's a refreshing change to hear something that one would not ordinarily listen to...
Not Man 11-29-99, 02:20 PM I agree Skyklad about the classifications of metal it is quite confusing. I guess I like everything except rap metal, death metal and black metal :)
Sal Collaziano 11-30-99, 02:46 AM I probably like all metal as well.. I don't think I've heard all of it - but what I've heard I liked. What is an example of Rap Metal? I might have heard that. I dunno. Death Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash, etc.. I like all of that. I like anything that gets my blood flowing. :)
Not Man 11-30-99, 01:09 PM Korn, Limp Bizkit, Insane Clown Posse.....This is making me sick I gotta stop. :) Actually I have to agree with you on that Sal about getting the blood moving. If it loud and aggressive then it's for me.
Sal Collaziano 11-30-99, 05:10 PM Oh, my God.. Ya know? It figures.. This is why I hear so much about Korn, Limp Bizkit, and the Insane Clown Posse.. Gee, it's Rap Metal. Whattaya know? I should have guessed...
Not Man 12-01-99, 01:10 PM Another that would fall in this category is Kid Rock.......Yuck!...that left a bad taste in my mouth. LOL
Sal Collaziano 12-02-99, 03:39 AM Hehehe, yeah.. I've seen one of his videos.. Long hair and everything.. Wait - do those other bands have long haired white people too? hehe Wierd, wierd, wierd... Kid Rock. haha He's so damn popular too.
Not Man 12-02-99, 01:37 PM Yeah as much as I hate to admit it I saw some of his video.....Batawadda or what ever it is called. I'm not sure about the long hair Sal. He's mostly popular with the younger crowd.....I think.....I hope. :D
Skyklad 12-03-99, 02:55 AM I saw one of that imbeciles videos and had to leave the room to throw up. I wonder who's idea it was to create that abomination called RapMetal anyway?? I've never liked the combination..not even when Anthrax did it...
Sal Collaziano 12-03-99, 06:26 AM Yeah, he is mostly liked by the younger crowd.. And I never liked the idea of Rap Metal either. I bought Anthrax's rap album a year ago just to check it out.. Ahh, it was okay I guess. I dunno.. Maybe just because I like Anthrax. Metallica will probably be Rap Metal one day. hehe With Dr. Dre now, ya never know...
Not Man 12-03-99, 03:21 PM Okay I'm probably being onesided because I like Anthrax doing "I'm the man" and "Bring the noise". I guess my reasoning would be that Anthrax is a (real) metal band trying to do a rap song that is more metal than anything being done by these "new metal" wannabes. I know I'm one confused person so I'll shut up. :)
Sal Collaziano 12-04-99, 05:24 PM No, I understand what you're saying.. They are a true and proven Metal/Hard Core band. They were just having fun with that album. No harm done there...

Sal Collaziano 12-06-99, 05:54 AM Hey, that's a cool smiley face thing there. I'll have to make sure we use it when we get emoticons.. :) hehe
There is no good style of metal. Metal has always been hinderance on the music scene instead of a help. It was always associated with long hair and hippedome in the seventies and therefore left itself open to a real kicking when Punk finally came to save rock'n'roll. Need we even mention the hair parade of the eighties and the pathetic thrash of the era? In the ninetes we are left with a group of posers who can't even make angsty music without packaging it up and making it acceptable to the mainstream, theses guys are every bit as bad as the poodle and perm brigade that dominated the eighties. Music has always been saved by young, unwashed, unemployed lads with a guitar in one hand a half brick in the other. Guns'n'Roses are the only metal band to ever fulfill this criteria and there will not be another like that.Let's hope we have a band like Nirvana or the Sex Pistols who come up to give Rap Metal the kicking it deserves and put good tunes back on the agenda.
Thrash and speed metal. All those great thrash bands that never got signed in the 80s have more talent
in their little finger than all of the Nu-metal bands put together.
Drogo the Halfling 1-06-02, 07:25 AM Progressive Metal. Bands like Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation and Symphony X.
XX Skinni XX 1-19-02, 02:01 AM prog metal - @#%$ like vanden plas and symphony x
Girl In The Darque 1-27-02, 07:16 AM I dont have fixed favourite... Depends hugely on my mood.
When I'm really @#%$ off, death metal helps me a little I think. Not too brutal, stuff like Nile, old Opeth and In Flames. I think angry people should listen to more complex and melodic metal, as i reckon it helps me rationalise and get over things.
When I'm generally down i'll listen to a bit of Doom or gothic. I once listened to My Dying Bride 'Turn Loose The swans' just after my grandad died, and literally, the tears were just streaming down my face without my realising!
And when I'm just really at peace (i.e. stoned) nothing beats a good old bit of sludge like Warhorse, Charger or Crowbar.
