Couldn't figure out where to put this so I chose here. Any other opera fans out there? Opera is not 80s specific but when good, it is timeless.
I saw a production of Puccini's Madame Butterfly on television a couple of weekends ago and I am not ashamed to say I was a weeping ball of mush by the end of it. It's just so tragic. Love that opera. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/forum/smilies/sad16.gif
What about Georges Bizet's Carmen? The world's most famous of all operas? "L'amour est enfant de Bohême" melts me everytime. The March of the Toréador rouses the blood everytime.
Everybody knows the Flower Duet from Lakme by Delibes (even if it's just from the British Airways commercials). Anybody listened to the complete opera?
Anybody not laughed through Verdi's "La Donna è Mobile" (woman is fickle) from Rigoletto?
What's your favourite? I can't be the only one. :p

"Ever since I was a young man, I've played the silver ball/From Soho down to Brighton/I must've played them all/But I've never seen anything like him in any amusement hall/That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball!"
"Tommy" by The Who! Hey, you didn't specify what kind of opera it had to be!
Sincerely,

There has to be a twist...
I have never been to an opera but there are some songs Pavarotti and Andrea Bochelli sing that just give me chills. I prefer Tenors over the female opera but that is on my list of things to do.
Tommy was more of a Musical but is was good!

Absolutely right John. Rock operas are just as good too.
:)
Hey Bogie, I just noticed, you're over 1K! Congratulations!
Tristan and Isolde is my favorite opera overall, though I'm not that into Wagner, being pretty sick of him. I think it's his best work.
I love Monteverdi's Orfeo. I almost forgot about that! Purcell's Dido and Aeneas is my other favorite from the time period. Baroque opera is wonderful for when you need a change from the over-the-top scoring of those wacky Romantics, love them though we do.
Time to update my CD collection, again...

Madame Butterfly is definitely a favourite of mine, but I think my number one is La Traviata *sigh* Love opera.....
My favorite is Carmina Burana. The music is gorgeous.

I have to admit that I´m not that deep into classic music and play of any kind, but sometimes, one of my few CDs of this genre find it´s way into my player.
Some of the modern interpretations are also worth to give a listen, e.g. Erasures 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King' (Grieg) or Depeche Modes 'Moonlight Serenata' (Beethoven).
For Daffy (but not only) - check out the interpretations of Kraftwerk tracks by the Balanescu Quartet. ;)
Although I don´t know if this can be considered as 'classic', I´m quite partial to the movie 'Much Ado About Nothing' with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh. I have both the video and the soundtrack.
(Yeah, I know that this flick also features Keanu Reeves, ladies... :D )
I gotta be in the right mood for opera

You know who I think has an amazing voice? That young girl Charlotte Church. Has anyone heard her sing? She does opera music.
I've heard of her but I don't recall what she sings?
I really enjoy a duet sung by Pavarotti and Bono of all people - its haunting and beautiful. Miss Sarajevo. Check it out if you get a chance :)
