View Full Version : Freestyle!
Sal Collaziano 11-22-99, 09:10 AM Okay. This is another of my favorite types of music. I have just about every freestyle song ever made (atleast the good ones). I collect it. I like the emotion expressed in this type of music. I also like the sound. I don't see any dance music fans here yet, but they will be. It's just another part of what made the 80's.. Sure, the jocks, the guidos, the metalheads; we all fought. But wouldn't you pay to have those days back anyway?
Skyklad 11-22-99, 09:38 AM Are you kidding...I LOVE dance music. I remember the Stevie B days...and Lil Suzie and La Bouche!! I've seen Stevie B, La Bouche, Real McCoy, Lil Suzie, 2 Unlimited and some others that I can't remember. I know all these may not count as purely free style but they're awesome nonetheless. Some other great dance artists: Prince, Fun Factory (saw these guys too), Madonna, Bobby Brown..etc.. This is going to cause me to get fired...I've spent more time surfing around this web message board than working! LOL
Sal Collaziano 11-22-99, 09:43 AM hehe! Skyklad. You're basiscally.. Me! hehe Except for the ballads, we like the same stuff.. Remember, "Every Little Step You Take" from Bobby Brown? That's when I really started getting seriously into music.. And they are also some of the best times of my life! :) I know all those artists you mentioned.. They're great. :) Remember when they were on MTV? Jeez! Those were the days... How life has changed...
Oh my god I saw that Bobby Brown video a few weeks ago and I'm sorry but I laughed pretty hard. We've come a long way since that 'fashion phase'. I have to admit 88/89 I wasn't getting as much with the scene anymore NKOTB turned me off for a while.
Sal Collaziano 11-22-99, 04:32 PM Well, NKOTB were alittle dopey.. It was an interesting time. I liked the styles. I was 17 and 18 at that point. It went pretty well with me. :) That was around the time I'd finally became good-looking. hehe. So I will always love it. :)
Mirdonamy 11-23-99, 07:15 AM Okay, I finally figured out that this is where I am supposed to be. What was I doing asking metal heads about Shannon? Anyhow, I love this music soooo much. I don't own any, so I am addicted to Miami's Power 96. I hate R & B and hip hop is boring, but synth/dance 80s is amazing, and this station plays lots of it alongside crap like backstreet boys...yak! Anyhow, I need some band names...really, help me here. I am so lost. I was young, very young...but I could skate with the best of them! Now, roller rinks play crap and I don't go. But then...oh boy was my life good!
Sal Collaziano 11-23-99, 08:31 AM hehe. Yes. I have heard about Power 96. It's a good station.. Well I assume you like TKA. Right? (Tears May Fall - Hey girl, this love affair that we've got goin' has me so confused. My temperature is quickly growin', I believe it true that this casual affair has turned to love.); Safire (Love Is On Her Mind - so she better find a lover. The man she wants is mine so she better find another); George LaMond (Wondering - if this love we have is true; Wondering was it me or you); TKA (Give Your Love To Me - All your friends tell me that you care for me. You hide all your feelings and you're scared of me. Well let me walk away all your fear. Whisper sweet words into your ear. Hold me close and don't try to run - cause this love affair has just begun); Tina B (January/February - January came and you stepped into my world, February's over now you're with another girl); TKA (Maria - She was fine. The girl was from the projects, she had long brown hair and a body beyond compare. She had a boyfriend, a drug-dealer, but I didn't mind 'cause she wanted to be with me so he had to set her free), 'Lil Suzy (Love Can't Wait - for too long, hold onto love while it's strong). Up.. Sorry. Carried away. hehe Bye!
Skyklad 11-24-99, 07:42 AM I'll second Sal's suggestions for you M!!! TKA, Lil Suzie, Safire..all great artists!! Stevie B will always be my favourite "freestyle" artist though!! He's awesome live!!! I too do not like R&b and hip hop..nor rap..all three styles provide no interest for me.
Sal Collaziano 11-24-99, 07:53 AM Stevie B's "In My Eyes" was the first cassingle I'd ever bought. That was the beginning of change for me.. Stevie B is one of the best... People who come from his school are usually very good as well..
Mirdonamy 11-24-99, 07:51 PM Thanks for the suggestions! I never knew any of the names, silly me. Anyhow, who sings the song "Weekends"?
Sal Collaziano 11-25-99, 06:45 AM Are you meaning "Lookout Weekend" by Debbie Deb? Lookout weekend, here I come. Because weekends were - made for fun. Something like that.. That is Debbie Deb.. There actually is another song called "Weekend" but I thought you mentioned those above lyrics... The other "Weekend" has a bit of a House groove to it (which I also love)...
Mirdonamy 11-26-99, 08:23 PM I guess I am looking for Debbie Deb. "Look out weekend cause here I come, because weekends were...made for fun!" I love that song!!!!
Sal Collaziano 11-30-99, 03:03 AM Okay, I should be getting my tape copying maching back today.. I'm not sure what I can get done during the week, but the weekend shouldn't be a problem.. I will give you a list, at some point, and let you pick from that...
Mirdonamy 11-30-99, 07:58 AM Awesome. Anyhow, Power 96 plays great Freestyle mixes and calls them Traffic Jams because they are from 7:45-8am and from 5:15 to 5:30pm...but since I am in my car I can't record anything. They plays lots of other good music too, but also a lot of R & B crap...yuk. Anyhow, I look forward to seeing your list! :)
Sal Collaziano 11-30-99, 08:59 AM Okay. As soon as I can I will.. I'm sure by atleast the weekend I should have something.. :)
You know this is somewhat where my lyrics site is lacking in this genre. So if anyone has lyrics that they would like posted just email them to me and I'll get them up there. I like having a little something for everybody. : ) Mirdonomy I post everything that is sent to me and give the sender complete credit. I've still got tons of lyrics to put up but so little time these days lol : )
Mirdonamy 12-02-99, 10:37 AM Zel, I am not sure where to get lyrics...but can I make some requests for certain songs...or did you post everything you had?
Sal Collaziano 12-03-99, 06:44 AM Mirdonamy.. You could always go to the search engines and search for lyrics.. Go to the front page of this website and at the bottom of the page there is a search engine.. It's that Direct Hit thing. Type "lyrics" in the text box and hit enter... That is a great start.. :)
I was always and still am partial to TKA's One Way Love... used to go crazy when the club we danced to played the song... instant dance floor filler. Anyone remember Trinere? They had a few Freestyle hits.....
Sal Collaziano 12-10-99, 08:32 AM Trinere! Of course! Lookout Weekend, How Can We Be Wrong, When I Hear Music, I'll Be All You Ever Need, Tka! Of course, too! One Way Love, Scars Of Love, Tears May Fall, X-ray Vision, Give Your Love To Me, Louder Than Love, Maria... TKA was basically the best freestyle group, in my opinion.. There are some other huge names, though...
Lookout Weekend was by Debbie Deb actually, I think I still have a copy on vinyl of When I Hear Music... I'll have to look for that...of course, I don't actually have a record player anymore <g> I also remember a group called I think "Freestyle" or the song was called that... it went, "Freestyle's kickin' in the house tonight, move your body from left to right" something, something, something...
Sal Collaziano 12-10-99, 09:11 AM I heard of that song, "Freestyle" too.. I think I've heard it. hmmm... You're right about Lookout Weekend.. I wonder why I was thinking it was Trinere too.. I dunno!
lucasist 12-12-99, 03:16 PM I'm sure I added this the other day....must have failed for some reason. Anyway, I know some of the bands/tracks mentioned here. Eg. In England, Nu Shooz released 'I can't wait' (big hit) and 'Point of no return' (less so). LP called 'Poolside' I think. Also, Shannon had hits with 'Let the music play' and 'Give me tonight' over here. I've not heard the term 'Freestyle' before though. Can someone define it for me. It sounds like stuff I like!
Sal Collaziano 12-13-99, 03:03 AM Hi there, Lucasist.. Welcome to the website. You mentioned some good stuff there. Especially Nu Shooz "I Can't Wait". I don't hear that very often for some reason.. I might not even have it... Otherwise, the term "Freestyle" refers to just that kind of music you mentioned. Ever hear TKA, George LaMond, Cynthia, Fascination, Johnny O, Safire? These are some examples of the top Freestyle artists...
lucasist 12-13-99, 02:16 PM H'mmm. Don't know any of those. I'm guessing they were not big in the UK. I still don't get the genre though. To me, the examples I've seen mentioned, (Nu Shooz, Shannon, Salt & Pepa) all seem quite different types of music (albeit all "80's dance" music). I think 'Bobby Brown, Every Little Step' was mentioned too. In the UK, we called this sort of track 'swingbeat' ? Lucasist
Sal Collaziano 12-13-99, 06:04 PM Bobby Brown was pretty cool.. hmm.. Yes, Nu Shooz, Shannon, and Salt 'n Peppa were different kinds of musics.. Shannon was the closest thing to Freestyle.. You'd have to check out some of those artists I mentioned to hear Freestyle.. If you'd like I'll email you an MP3 of a Freestyle song... They're big files, though... Freestyle became popular a few years after "Let The Music Play", really..
rhempler 12-16-99, 12:15 PM Yeah, the song was called "Freestyle" and it was by the group Freestyle. That was my jam! Anyone remember "Bass Mechanic" by M.C.A.D.E? That song was IT at the parties in high school. Others I loved: Trinere, Johnny O (Fantasy Girl), Noe (Like a Child at Play, Silent Mourning), George Lamond (Bad of the Heart), Cover Girls (Show Me), Nocera (Let's Go). Damn, I wish we could throw one big party where that was all we played!
Sal Collaziano 12-16-99, 02:32 PM Rhempler, one of my favorite Noel songs was "The Question". Ever hear that one? He also sings "Fire and Ice" and "Out of Time" (Where out of time we only have pictures of what we used to see. We're out of time with only a whispter of what we used to be). George LaMond "Look Into My Eyes", Where Does That Leave Love" - what great music.. Freestyle isn't going to make it very big on a memorabilia site because it's been back for about 2 or 3 years now. The comeback has seen mostly new artists who aren't exactly getting the same respect the old artists got, but they're pretty good.. Even the old artists are back but aren't getting the same respect either. I suppose most of the good, original sounds and lyrics have already been expressed...
Hey if you want to listen to some good 80s freestyle songs get Freestyles Greatest Collections (its a 4 pack cd set) i bought it last week and it has wicked songs.
Sal Collaziano 1-04-00, 05:18 AM Hey, Dagreek! What's doin'? Where've ya been?! It's good to see ya back! Hey, what label is that pack you brought? I think I have it too. There is one from Timber/MicMac and one other. The Timber/MicMac series has 11 or 12 editions and it's amazing! The one you are speaking of (may even be MicMac too) is awesome!! Even better! Just less songs...
MOFreestyle 1-27-00, 09:45 AM Yo Peeps Check out My Site: move.to/freestyleworld Peace
Sal Collaziano 1-27-00, 10:49 AM Hi there, MOFreestyle.. I just checked out your site.. It looks good. :) Most of the songs there are favorites of mine... I'm gonna move this to the appropriate location in a day or two - since there is a location for websites. If you become a regular member, I will add your site to the links page.. Hope to see ya soon... Take it easy.
Mirdonamy 2-01-00, 08:15 AM Okay, do any of you have Poison Clan's "Dance All Night"? I want that song so badly, but nowhere online can I find the MP3. I am also looking for a song called "Egypt" or maybe it's called "It's Automatic". Does anyone know who sings it? I love it so much. Are they two separate songs? I always here them mixed together. Also, I am looking for a song that goes "You put your hand upon my hip, and I dip, you dip, we dip. I put my hand up on your hip, and you dip, I dip, we dip" Anyone know who sings that? There are so many great dance songs. They may not all be 80s, but I want to find them all! This is so hard. I can't even think of the lyrics of the others I want to learn about :(
Mirdonamy 2-01-00, 10:46 AM Okay, I don't know who sings this, but I was wondering if you could figure it out from this: "we are here...to rock..(something something something)" The music is very synth/dance. A woman comes on near the end, but they clip/chop each of her words...neat effect. Her part is a bit trancy. It sounds like lots of vocoders are used in this song (like that Automatic song I can't figure out the band). Anyone have the slightest clue?
Sal Collaziano 2-01-00, 01:33 PM Freak Nasty sings "Da Dip". Mirdonamy.. Are you talking about Techno sounding songs? Dance all niiii-ii-ii-ight. Dance all night... Is "Automatic" spoken in sought of a mechanical sounding voice? If so, I know which song you are referring too.. Lemme know... I can help you BIG time with the dance music, as it was my main favorite music...
Mirdonamy 2-01-00, 04:17 PM I will look up Freak Nasty now on Napster. Dance All Night is Poison Clan...but I don't know where to find just the MP3 or Wav. And yes, Automatic is mechanical sounding. I really need help here. I am also looking for a song call "Good Life" or something. "good life good life good life good life...its a good life...good life" boy is that repetitive. But it is a really cool song :)
Sal Collaziano 2-02-00, 02:43 AM Mirdonamy.. You like some real freaking, amazing, unbelievable awesome music, you know.. Some of these songs you are mentioning, I really love.. I will get you details on that "Automatic" song today or tonight.. Just post a reminder for me here so that when I get home I remember! And "Good Life" is by Inner City. So look up Inner City on napster as well.. Dance All Night is considered Techno.. You might want to hang out alittle bit in the Techno room... You know something.. "It's Automatic" might be by "Trinere & Friends". Check on that.. Another group called "Freestyle" sung as song "It's Automatic" as well.. I just don't remember WHO sings the song - but I know which one you are talking about.. We will find out.
Mirdonamy 2-02-00, 07:33 AM We have to go dancing sometime Sal! I don't know when I will be in NY, but if you ever come to Miami...let me know! Anyhow, reading the titles on this board makes me sing and dance in my chair here at work! This rocks. Let me know what else you find for me. I will keep asking quesions too! :) yay, I am going to the techno room now :)
Sal Collaziano 2-02-00, 08:38 AM We'll definatly go dancing, Mirdonamy.. Even though, well, I don't know how. hehe I will. :) Ahh, I have It's Automatic at home. I will get you an answer for sure. :) Keep asking.. I'll have answers! :)
Mirdonamy I still have tons of lyrics to post - so little time lol - I try to do a couple new songs each week but I'm afraid to get to big incase the non-nostalgic nasties come visit. I take requests too but I can't always promise I'll find stuff in my own collection but I use search engines to help me out from time to time.
Mirdonamy 2-08-00, 09:41 AM Thanks for looking for "It's Automatic" for me. Whenver you find it, is cool. no rush. Do they also sing Egypt or is that just a band that sounds like them? You'd like Power 96 Miami..great radio station...lots of Freestyle and Old School Rap! :)
Sal Collaziano 2-08-00, 03:00 PM Can you give me a few lyrics to "Egypt"? It does sound like a title they would do.. Lemme know.. I forget what that song sounds like.
Mirdonamy 2-09-00, 09:54 AM That is kinda hard, Sal...it is mostly music. The only lyrics I can think of are "Egypt"......."Egyptian Lover"......."Egypt" That is all I know :(
Sal Collaziano 2-09-00, 02:59 PM Hmm.. It really sounds like something they'd do. Especially since it's mostly instrumental... It will come soon... I wish it would hurry! :|
Mirdonamy 2-16-00, 11:26 AM Okay, "Egypt" is by the Egyptian Lovers, and "It's Automatic" is by Freestyle (or Freestylers...something like that). I was able to nab Egypt while on Napster, but nobody had It's Automatic. I am still on the hunt for "Dance All Night" and "Good Life".
Sal Collaziano 2-18-00, 02:25 PM I know I have those songs on tape somewhere.. I wish I had them as MP3's too.. If I find them, I will let you know.. If you do, let me know too! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">

There were a lot more single hits than bestselling albums during this period, and that list is even larger.
Sal Collaziano 4-20-00, 06:37 PM Okay, Photonix.. We'll have to make you the Freestyle Master of 80sXChange! You're really on the ball here! There aren't many freestyle fans here but I'm really hoping to get some! Freestyle is probably my favorite music from the 80s. Glamrock would be a close second. I think.. It's really close - but I really love the sound of freestyle.. It's funny how even THAT has made a huge comeback..
Where are you located? I'm in New York.. A lot of freestyle artists have been playing live lately..
Otherwise, the sad thing about freestyle is that it did mostly sell singles.. I think it would still be around if albums were selling.. Freestyle is a very emotional and energetic type of music. Then you have the lyrics. :)
Photonix 4-21-00, 04:27 PM Hi Sal:
Greetings!
Yeah ... freestyle is my favorite music type. I have almost all the old school tunes (pre 1990) ... I also collect some new school tunes that are true to the old sound, with creativity and variety visible in the music. There are so many newer tunes that are just different lyrics layered on the Planet Rock loop it's a joke.
I am quite far away from the freestyle scene, residing in Western Canada.
Lemme know if u need any help with some hard to find tunes.
Cheers.
BTW, Do u remember a tune called Cafe Con Leche by Bad Boys Orchestra? It was on Hot 103.5 in NY in 87-88? Just asking, as I am not sure if that was the name of the tune or not. Kind of a huge percussion/bass number that sounds similar to "Picking Up the Pieces" by Brenda K. Starr?
Sal Collaziano 4-21-00, 05:09 PM Okay, first. If that song was played on Hot 103.5 in 87 or 88, I know it.. I just haven't heard it in so long that I don't remember it.. You wouldn't happen to have any Hot 103.5 recorded tapes would you? I'd pay nice cash for those.. Otherwise, what are some songs you might be looking for? I can't think of any right now, really.. Except one.. I find it hard to find an MP3 of "When the Pieces Fall"... :) Talk to ya soon!
randygalaxy 4-21-01, 11:40 AM freestyle is the best ;)
